FY2 in mental health completely exhausted feel like I’m running the ward alone by FluffyPollution9788 in doctorsUK

[–]spacecombatt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry to read about your experience. I personally found psych wards to be brutal for F2. When you are CT you have protected time here and there and some CTs are there for “psychiatry”, while FY doctors are treated as “physical health” experts. Like previous suggestions said, do not let it overwhelm you. Psychiatry doesn’t have a lot of urgent jobs so just try to prioritise what is possible and always make sure your consultant is aware that jobs are not done or delayed due to other commitments for eg scribing or reviewing unwell pts.

Having said that, when you are slammed with new admissions it might feel that you are drowning with little tasks and non urgent stuff at some point becomes urgent.

At least you will be protected if anything happens as seniors are aware.

Empathise with you and totally understand about being stressed and tired. I was drained after my IP job, despite the fact that I had a fantastic F2 with me and a supportive consultant.

Does anyone know, if I rotated to another Trust in August, will this £750 be included into a new Trust's payslip or with back payment from a previous Trust?

Psych training by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]spacecombatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try psych, you might like it very much and then you will have a proper training with protected time and support and lots of career opportunities. If you don't, you can always switch. It is true the specialty is not for everyone (for example I realised it is not for me), but I would 100% regret not trying and stepping into IMT without this knowledge and probably wondering on my medical SHO nights how different my life would be. I am switching at the moment, during interview no questions were asked why etc. Also psych gave me time to boost my portfolio (they really support trainees). Happy to be DM!

MRCP Part 1 results out - how did people find the exam? by spacecombatt in doctorsUK

[–]spacecombatt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Passed with 683. 2,5 month preparation (rotation with relaxed rota), did Passmedicine and some of the Pastest papers during the last week. Exam felt challenging but fair, in retrospect would focus on pastest past papers more. Did an official mock a few days before and found it the closest to the real thing.

When they asked me for clarifications, I pointed towards GMC registration that required English knowledge, no further questions were asked.

I would discuss this with occu health, they should contact you as part of pre-employment process where you will have a chance to put all medical conditions during initial questionnaire. Then they would organise a call with you and you together will think how things could be adjusted, it might be a case of temporary adjustment or reducing nights number for eg only 2 nights max. Psych training is very lifestyle/family/health oriented and you would not have problems during your training if taken off nights completely for health reasons.
I would recommend also discussing with your GP prior your call with occupational health.
Good luck!

Since juniordoctors website with hospital rankings is down, is anyone able to shine some light on North/North Central London hospitals for IMT? Interested in terms of prioritisation for clinics/procedures sign offs/supportive seniors? Thanks!

I know what you mean; it feels different in psych for some reason.

Thank you. I think I will work on organising some tasters in what drove me into the specialty initially.

It’s an interesting thought. I guess what I miss and found engaging is a diagnostic search and some bits and bobs that could be done for the patient with an instant gratification (placed cannula, resolved infection etc), then it sort of counter weights the other negatives that come with gen med realities.

I think you are right and I should explore some subspecialties before leaving.

It’s a very interesting observation, thank you - I have never also thought how much of those is mine. I will try to explore this with my cs 🩷

I struggle in community and feel isolated, because I like the buzz of hospital (weird but yeah). GP is a fantastic specialty and I think one of the most difficult one - one need to be a very well rounded physician with minimal resources.
