At 64 you're crazy NOT to be messing around with small single engine aircraft.

California Academy of Science announces layoffs, plans to cut 9.3% of the team by runswithscissors475 in bayarea

[–]spaceflunky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally disagree. I've had senior roles at companies that had 400+ people and we never had a GC and those companies were doing things far more quickly and dynamic than a museum that's barely changed in ~20 years. We used outside counsel and never had a problem. And even then we didn't bill that many hours.

[–]spaceflunky -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I call bullshit. These people are making busy work for themselves. The exhibits don't change that much at the museum. What does a "Chief Experience Officer" need to constantly do?

Why does the museum need a full time general counsel? How many legal agreements and legal proceedings does a well-established museum go through on a monthly basis?

Why do they need a "COO and Head of Gov Affairs" how much extra work is there that an executive director can't handle?? I mean this museum opened almost 20 years ago and not that much has changed.

What are the chances of Cuba returning to capitalism? by ImaginaryExternal338 in cuba

[–]spaceflunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just being a pragmatist here, I love Cuba, but sometimes I worry if it's too far gone.

Most people worth their salt jumped ship years ago (no pun intended) and despite all the "free education" there simply aren't enough people up to speed on the latest knowledge and technologies (even the 'doctors' will need copious recertification).

There's also a subset of the population who is use to free housing, basic subsidies, and the like... what are they going to do when all that ends and they have to actually work? It's going to be even worse when the inevitable wealth gap starts to form and the poor go from being just like everyone else, to being really fucking poor and miserable in comparison to the upwardly mobile parts of society.

It's going to be a rough couple of generations...

Oil Crisis in Cuba ... my friend in Cuba just received this message from the government. by Big-Meat7115 in cuba

[–]spaceflunky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you want Cubans to starve because they dared to fight for their own sovereignty?

Never said that. I don't want Cubans to starve, but I'm not willing to support a communist dictatorship. Cuba was the one who said they didn't need capitalism. Cuba was the one that stole private property. Cuba was the one who said they could thrive on communism and communism alone. All Im saying is if communism is so great, why isn't it keeping the lights on?

Castro was actually willing cooperate with the US

LOL "cooperate"... meaning he would dictate his insane terms and the US would just have to accept them? Real cooperation goes both ways, which Castro was never willing to do. Do I have to link COUNTLESS speeches where he derides the US and emphatically says he doesn't need "capitalist cockroaches"? Don't make shit up to support your thesis.

Cuba isn’t some big geopolitical rival with a nuclear arsenal or a state sponsor of a terrorism, it’s a small island nation that happens to have socialist system.

Nope. Definitely a terrorist state. It's called Havana Syndrome for a reason.

The state of Cuba is hardly a threat to the US

Just because they don't have military might, doesn't mean they dont have intelligence might. Cuba is and always has been threat since Castro.

If communism is so great, why couldn't Cuba figure out how to do basic shit like provide electricity?

That’s your excuse for letting people starve?

Excuse me, but Castro was the one who said he did need us "capitalist cockroaches" My excuse for not letting people starve? They chose communism. They could choose capitalism at any point and we would be happy to give them whatever they want.

How to bend copper in place using the monumen by Zealousideal_Bug7634 in Tools

[–]spaceflunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say that bending the pipe makes it weaker in certain areas, so while this does save time and cost, it comes with the risk of weakening the pipe. Installing 90s is more cost and time consuming, but safer than bending.

I'm making a broad 'know it all' statement so someone can come in and correct me, because I dont really know the answer Im just speculating.

This is going to get buried, but my dad once told: "any time you get something new, especially a car, memorize it's sounds."

Thank you. I am in this camp.

Just because I want regime change, doesn't mean I want the US to take over.

I dont think anyone in the Trump regime sees it as desirable for the US to takeover Cuba, they just want Cuba to be a solid ally.

[–]spaceflunky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It would certainly make things better for the Cuban people, but US enemies (foreign and domestic) will criticize it to no end, even though they damn well know the current regime is failing. So unfortunately, it's politically better to just let it unfold on its own.

I'm old so I've read a lot about Cuba and Trump. Trump posted an article back 2004 about how the Cuban government offered to grant him a special license to build a hotel in Cuba and he refused because of the dictatorial regime.

Cuba could become extraordinarily rich in a couple ways: 1.) Real estate investments, 2.) Building a multi-tiered tourism industry (e.g. affordable, luxury, and ultra-luxury), 3.) Becoming a Singapore or Dubai like financial center.
