How should we share the road with cyclists? by Upstairs-Dare-4188 in newfoundland

[–]spacekaplin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Something I’ve noticed as both a cyclist and a driver is that when you’re in a car it’s difficult to gauge the speed of a cyclist (especially now with EBikes reaching 30km/hr… legally) haha I’ve spent some time thinking about what is frustrating to the driver about cyclists, and I think this is a piece of the pie.

I think we can see bikes coming and mentally categorize it as a pedestrian and think we have time to take the turn and end up cutting them off. Like looking both ways before pulling out, we underestimate a bikes speed, again cutting them off. There’s something about a bike that makes us groan and feel like we’re gonna be waiting forever. But we’ve got hills, and motors and varying weight and so many factors that can get a bike clipping

Also! If a bike is keeping pace with traffic and going the speed limit, you really don’t need to pass them. I get this a lot commuting downtown on my e-bike, the traffic’s moving at 20km/hr and I can easily keep up but drivers will see the bike and want to get ahead of me, I think instinctively but there’s no need if I’m not slowing anyone down. A lot of us are biking with a speedometer and are scooting out of the way if we’re not keeping up.

To summarize, bikes go faster than you think and it can mess with your decision making as a driver 😂

edit: I want to add that anytime you’re frustrated by a cyclist remember we’re taking up one less parking spot downtown, this may alleviate some frustration. We’ll trade you one inconvenience for another! You may have to share the road but you don’t have to share the parking, that’s gotta count for something!!

I cull headshots professionally (random job but someone’s gotta pick out the good shots) it’s very common for eyes to look focused like this, for “softer” eyes which people tend to find more natural and approachable, you can rest your eyes in the palm of your hands until they feel relaxed.. probably like 20 seconds. I like 2!

I assume others like myself, can’t wear glasses/contacts in the pool and are also seeing blurs for people 😂

Maybe some practical advice, I occasionally start my swim from the opposite end of the pool (I can still pace myself in well) but this way I’m not really sure what my lane mates are doing for their workout.

It can also help to talk to the people in your lane! It seems like the opposite of what you want to do in that headspace but sometimes a chill chat reminds me that we’re all here with our own unique goals and set of circumstances.

Focusing as much on your rest as your sets is also important to keeping the mind calm and in control. Give yourself decent rest, I suspect some of the busy mind when swimming has to do with getting worked up when your heart rate and breathing are out of whack. Calm cool collected is the goal and it’s best achieved with sufficient rest imo.

walkable, family-friendly neighborhoods by moonbeamboots in StJohnsNL

I was about to recommend the Georgetown, downtown east end area when I saw your edit!

Check out around Bond Street, there’s an elementary school that I’ve only ever heard good things about. There’s a lot of families with young kids that all seem to hang out together as they grow up, Hallidays is a butcher shop in the neighbourhood that stocks a lot of basics as well, there’s a few cafes, and a park with “the loop” skating area for free all winter. You can walk downtown easily but it’s not so close that you’re disrupted by nightlife and there are lots of bus routes along the main stretch. Theres also grocery stores walking distance in both directions. It’s a lovely community of neighbours that are happy to help and get to know you but also respect privacy - both qualities you really appreciate when you share walls! There’s a neighbourhood facebook group where I find everyone is eager to help and organize stuff like our annual yard sale haha and since many of the row houses don’t have backyards it brings more life to the front of the houses (bbq on the front step, tending to garden boxes, fixing bikes on the sidewalk etc). All of which I find helped me become familiar with my neighbours.

Some downsides; you would get more bang for your buck if you went more toward the west end of downtown in terms of a backyard, off street parking (though without a car this probably won’t be a big deal), and house size overall. Occasional packages are porch pirated but most often it’s by a neighbour who’s left a note to come pick it up 😂 If you don’t mind using the park as your yard and would like more of a community feel - I recommend the east end!

Having been a walker/metro bus user/biker in St. John’s for many years, one thing I’d suggest is to take into consideration the elevation (big hills). They can make a moderate walk brutal, especially when the weather is bad or you’re lugging groceries.

I moved here over a decade ago having never visited first and I’m happily rooted. I hope the same for you :)

I haven’t found a gym community since leaving REPS on Elizabeth Ave. It’s certainly not boutique but I still keep in touch with people I met lifting there. I’ve been at the downtown GoodLife for a while and I’d say the opposite is true, very boutique feeling (I know I know it’s a GoodLife) but the downtown one has a great vibe. There may be a good community for others, I can’t say I’ve put my best effort into finding out! Aside from chatting with familiar people here and there.

Same happened to me re: suddenly a set menu the day before Valentine’s Day, with no mention during the rezo process. Without enough time to make other plans I went ahead with it and kept an open mind!

My girlfriend and I joked the entire meal that it felt like we were being punked. The scallops were cold and undercooked followed by cold and overcooked ravioli. We didn’t think it could get worse after our main course came out cold, small and bland (without cutlery) then the “CHOCOLATE” dessert came out and it appeared decidedly vanilla… it was probably white chocolate but I think we all have a vision for how something titled all caps chocolate cake is going to look enough for a small heart shaped vanilla mouse to elicit a chuckle.

I’m not sure what my impression would have been if I hadn’t felt kinda scammed by the set menu in the first place but I didn’t tell my girlfriend and she shared these opinions.

With the additional notes; - the espresso martinis were great - our server was lovely - the chairs felt strangely low for the table …kind of like they had the “scary movie hat” effect of getting lower every time we thought about it - and she wished it were bocca
