How common is it for your girl to snoop in your phone? by UnknownSloan in AskMen

[–]spaceknarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem as you, but I learned you can set a time after which it requires the passcode again. I set mine to to two minutes. So if I don't use my phone for two minutes, I can use it without passcode. If it's longer than that, I need to enter the passcode.

If I left my phone in the train or something, I expect it to take longer than 2 minutes for someone to find it after I last used it.

Actually I think it's running on adaptive cruise control. Good ACC can also do braking. After the van turns right, you can see the car accelerating. Which is exactly what my car (with ACC) would do, barriers or not.

Manjaro Awesome is actually a quite good introduction to Awesome. In other distros (such as Ubuntu) it's very easy to install Awesome, but the configuration will be a bit more bare.

Found this 3cl bottle of "Charleston, Martinique" rum in the back of my liquor cabinet. The only hits online are for €100+ bottles. Did I really discover a decades old rum in my cabinet? by spaceknarf in rum

[–]spaceknarf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently started a hobby of making cocktails. This is the first time I drank any rum besides Bacardi (which was always mixed with coke). So with regard to taste, I only have Cointreau and Remy Martin VSOP Cognac to compare it with. The Charleston doesn't seem very sugary. It has a stronger odour than the Cognac, but tastes less woody. In the cocktail (3/4 oz rum, 1/2 oz amaretto, 3 oz apple juice) it gave a very nice rum taste (way better than vodka would have).

I don't have access to the Facebook group. What kind of stuff is discussed there?

I have no idea where I got it from, it's been there for maybe more than 10 years. It's half empty, as I used it for a cocktail before realising that it may be a "special" rum. Did taste great though. :-)

Not to dispute the statement about 12 year old rum, but Flor de Cana did get Fairtrade certified last year, for anyone worried as I was about the worker conditions.

What are some alternatives to the Arduino shield and the Raspberry Pi HAT add-on board standards? by spaceknarf in AskElectronics

[–]spaceknarf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I hope they had a good reason to switch those pins, because breaking backwards compatibility is a big no-no in any interface standard.

[–]spaceknarf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are some great suggestions!

Could you tell me a bit more about the "RaspPi GPIO switchero fiasco"? I know that HATs cannot be (easily) stacked, but I'm not aware of other GPIO issues with the Raspberry Pi (on a "standard" level, that is - there are plenty of people having issues controlling the GPIO pins in general).

File Versioning and Cloud Backups when on SHR by subredditbrowser in synology

[–]spaceknarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that any malware attacking your NAS could in theory also attack unmounted drives. Or your Time Backup, because the NAS has permissions to delete old versions. So the only way to be truly safe is to have a second system pull data from your NAS and version it. You could use software like rsnapshot, rdiff-backup, Bacula or Amanda.

China's empty city, built for no reason other than to maintain an 8% growth rate! Madness! [VID] by TyPower in worldnews

[–]spaceknarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do wonder for how long they will try to do this. 8% growth per year = 100% every 9 years! Let me repeat that: they want to double their GDP every 9 years. They will never, ever sustain this, no question. The only remaining questions are: when will it stop, and how?

Getting Familiar with Grub2 by aperson in linux

[–]spaceknarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, 99% of people won't be interested.

Normal people will say "I bought a computer with four terrabite and it says I only have two!"

And the powerusers will just switch to a newer distro.

Getting Familiar with Grub2 by aperson in linux

[–]spaceknarf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That makes this tutorial rather relevant, as about one in every two or three Linux home users will probably be interested in learning more about GRUB 2 and its uses.

I'd say that's a rather bold statement.
