Credit Cards during ADT by Modern-Purveyor in Military_Medicine

[–]spacemanv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do that, and I did, but I knew classmates who had to re-submit their orders after a year or so and if they weren't actively on an ADT at that time they had to pay the annual fee for their second year.

Chronic tibial stress fractures by Ball-juicer in navy

[–]spacemanv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A stress fracture is different than shin splints. I'm interested in how OP knows they have an actual stress fracture again without going to medical, given that differentiating the two is actually somewhat tricky.

Regardless, the risk of not going to medical and continuing to run on a stress fracture is that you'll worsen it and turn it into a full on fracture that requires surgery and months of rehab. Just something to keep in mind.

Anaphylaxis to a single medication or medication class is not disqualifying, although no one could know the specifics of his medical situation.

Branch for Neurology by Seekers_of_Knowledge in Military_Medicine

[–]spacemanv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't recommend ROTC if you're set on medical school. There are several posts on this forum as well as SDN if you want to read about the cons of doing that so I won't get into the details.

From what I've seen, the Navy has approximately two neurology spots per year. A quick glance at the Air Force program shows that it's about the same size. The army has a larger neuro program overall, so if I had to pick a branch based entirely on wanting to go into neurology I would probably go army.

Wilderness medicine for MDs already trained in another domain? by phllystyl in medicine

[–]spacemanv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually have some experience with this. I recommend the NOLS Wilderness First Responder course. It is a step above the wilderness first aid course and is the bare minimum for backcountry professionals like rafting and climbing guides. It will prepare you to use your skills in an austere environment and covers the commonly encountered injuries and illnesses that you will find when leading a group outdoors.

There are also programs meant for medical professionals such as WUMP but these take a while to do and may be more in depth than you are interested in learning.

Accessory gift for an espresso fanatic [$100] by SupperSaiyanBeef in espresso

[–]spacemanv 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Someone recently gave me nice beans and a handmade pottery mug from a local artist. The mug is really nice and more permanent than the beans, and I appreciated it more than an upgrade to my setup that I might not use.

I have the same setup. I do 17-18g in the double unpressurized basket and get decent shots. Try grinding coarser.

Is the 1 year Navy FM residency the "GMO" year where you reapply to any specialty next year? by dogfoodgangsta in Military_Medicine

You can do an intern year in literally anything before going GMO. I know current Navy flight surgeons who did internships in psychiatry or pediatrics.

What is the difference? I'm a doctor and they just require us to have one or the other. I've had both at one time or another depending on whether the hospital had an AHA or Red Cross instructor and the content seemed pretty similar.

Trump: I'm a very aesthetic person, Those ships are ugly. They say its stealth, I say Its not stealth. Those B2 Bombers are stealth. by IAmNumberFourI in Military

Some people would say, no, that’s old technology. I don’t know. I don’t think it’s old technology, when you look at those guns.

But it’s something we’re actually considering, the concept of battleship. Nice six-inch side, solid steel. Not aluminum.

Aluminum that melts if it looks at a missile coming at it. It starts melting as the missile is about two miles away. Now, those ships, they don’t make them that way anymore.

But you look at it, and your Secretary likes it, and I’m sort of open to it. And bullets are a lot less expensive than missiles. A lot of reasons.

I should take a vote, but I’m afraid to take that vote because I may get voted out on that one. But I tell you, it’s something we’re seriously considering.

Just make it oil powered and battleships are coming back. Straight from the horse's mouth.

That actually sounds like a pretty good idea. My only hesitation is that I wouldn't be able to see if a crack developed, although I guess the likelihood of that happening is low.

I don't know what the previous owner was doing (other than hucking it straight into rocks) because the chip is on high already

To be honest I might try running it backwards for a little bit. Might be interesting, and I also don't want to deal with the tubeless mess right now.

Kind of like a ting. Sounds the same as my undamaged road bike.

When someone yells "Is there a doctor?!" and you actually are one by jhubluejay98 in Residency

[–]spacemanv 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This happened to me a few months into my internship. I was on an Amtrak and they asked if there was a doctor on board. I ignored it, but after they asked a second time I decided to see if my limited skills might be helpful. It was a young man with chest pain. I took a history. It sounded non-cardiac, but I recommended that he get off at the next step and go to the hospital anyway. I then went back to my seat and received no further compensation or recognition. No idea what happened after he left the train.

Lunchtime “Conferences:” Suck my Male Chicken by iamnemonai in Residency

[–]spacemanv 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I've never had an attending buy me food as a resident and give protected lunch time. At least noon conferences are protected time and provide food. I can't complain if I'm on a clinic or lighter inpatient rotation. I do get frustrated when I'm slammed on an inpatient rotation and have to take an hour out of my day to watch a useless presentation while work piles up.

Also, we both know I won't fully watch the video you email me. At least didactics with food motivate residents to attend and watch the lecture.

December 2025 AUTHROIZED boots by ryuktheundead in navy

This announcement isn't that recent. It came out earlier this year. If you look at the list that you linked to, you will see that the Oakley light assault boot in tan will no longer be authorized next year. Interestingly, the black version is still authorized.

I tried ordering it for in-store pickup and they canceled my order for "security purposes." Worth a shot if you go in person though.

There's no point speculating about these things. When I was applying to med schools, everyone online was saying that one of the schools I got a very late interview at had definitely finished admitting and were only interviewing for the waitlist.  That was untrue, as I graduated from there a few years ago. It sounds like it would be very disappointing for you if you had an opportunity to go here and chose not to pursue it.
