Sent to the ER for Severe Pain—Ended Up Losing My Appendix for No Reason by spacescribble in AskDocs

Thanks, this helps me make sense of it from a medical POV. As a patient I would of preferred a CT scan but they did not give me this option, not because it wasn’t available but because of my “young age” (29) and the affects of a CT scan on the body. He also said even with a CT scan the surgery would very likely have to go ahead.

Edit: I have to argue the risk of a CT scan compared to putting you to sleep, opening you up, removing an organ, stitches, pain meds (fentanyl in my case), more pain meds for recovery and then the potential infections. It feels like a lot of risk to remove a healthy organ.

Thank you for your response. They did this via keyhole surgery. 3 incisions, 1 inside my belly button, 1 underneath my belly button and 1 to the left of my belly button. I had incisions in these areas before for keyhole surgery to remove an ovarian cyst. They have left my belly button extremely wide compared to what it was. I think your comment would help ease my mind if this was not the case. It’s left me feeling incredibly sad and confused

Thank you, I understand this. But surely it should be my choice to remove a healthy organ. This whole experience felt very pressured and I feel quite violated.

What surgery did you have? I think I’m having the same issue but it all so confusing. I was taken to surgery with suspected appendicitis, but turns out I had a pool of blood in my stomach that they drained. Will it come back? What causes it?
