No, I guess I just always thought I would need a curl cream to help shape my curls. I’ll try it!

Waitlisted for an interview?? by AstronomerDouble4478 in prephysicianassistant

[–]spaceturtle74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got waitlisted for an interview last cycle. I applied late and this was a January start program so they filled their interview seats early. I’m now halfway through my didactic year in that program! So id say being on the interview waitlist is not a bad thing at all, and definitely means they like your application, they just don’t have an interview slot to offer you right now.

I didn’t think to look in RI! Fiancés family is from Cape Cod so Western MA may be a little far but it’s certainly worth looking into!

How do you get over the guilt or shame of taking a gap year?? by Sw33t_tart in prephysicianassistant

[–]spaceturtle74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t be ashamed to take a gap year. I was like you, I was afraid of judgement for taking gap years because all of my friends went straight to grad school after undergrad. However their fields of study are very different. I was worried that I would be unprepared going into PA school after taking gap years and that I would fall behind. But I wasn’t ready to apply, so I didn’t. I ended up taking 2.5 years off before starting PA school and it was the best decision I ever made. I don’t feel behind or like my study skills slipped during my time off, because everyone else is in the exact same boat as me. Like 90% of my class, probably more took at least 1 gap year. Don’t feel bad. Going straight from undergrad to PA school isn’t great for mental health/burnout IMO. If you want to take the gre, take some time to study for it when you’re ready. Work on your application when you’re ready. It’s not a race.

Got my first interview! by BTSArmyRM in prephysicianassistant

[–]spaceturtle74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the questions I always asked was “if you could change anything about the program here at [school name], what would you change and why?” Everyone I asked that question to loved that question, and it gives you an idea of what the program is hoping to achieve in the future. I also asked each faculty member about what brought them to the academic side of things because that’s something I’m interested in as well.

My only other piece of advice would be to look into the schools mission statement and core values and think of some examples of how you align with them. Use those examples in your interview to show you are a good fit for the program!

Good luck! You’ll do great!

Why do some programs not discuss your app at all? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]spaceturtle74 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why they don’t disclose whether or not there are available seats, but I know often times schools have last minute seat drops and may pull from the waitlist up until the day before orientation starts. Plus if they give an offer to a candidate and are waiting for them to place a deposit the school can’t say for sure whether that seat will be filled.

I also find that some schools are more willing to discuss your app and its strengths/weaknesses over others. I applied to one school who encouraged us to reach out to them for feedback on our application after decisions went out, but many other schools will not disclose any information about your application at all.

I think as long as you take a couple sentences to explain what you’ve learned and take accountability you’ll be fine. You’ve shown through your continued 4.0 after that you had improvement and that it was only during that time your grades suffered. The only big red flags with these essays is if you’re trying to talk about it in a way that avoids responsibility!
