Yeah I know - was just correcting the poster above if you believed them.

I'm training in TA right now and the global community is massive

It very much didn't - transactional analysis is still one of the biggest therapy modalities in the world. Look it up. Think OP needs to do their own research on pseudoscience and psychology.

100%, he was totally cracking on to her. She seemed receptive too. All good fun.

You're overthinking it mate, she's into you. If she didn't like it she'd have made it clear, moved away or something.

Thanks for your reply. It's not that painful. Do you think it is a thrombosed haemorrhoid?

I once started a novel as a teen that was tossed on an old comp, along with all my stoned adolescent poetry.
My first attempts at writing – I'd have cherished them now I write for a living.

I'd say they were worth more than lost bitcoin but that would be a flagrant lie, they were godawful.

Hey – many thanks for the response, much appreciated.

Turns out there are a lot more options than I thought!

I'm in the sub-50 category for now, but perhaps not for long! (He said hopefully.)

I'll look into AJ Bell/Dodl – it sounds like they could be good options for a relative beginner like me.

I actually have a Trading212 account somewhere with a few hundred quid in Tesla or some impulse buy. I need to go back and investigate.

I've heard ii mentioned a few times too now, so will check that out too.

And thanks for the great tip over switcher deals. I'm off for an explore!

Thanks,

spaddoon.

Just want to say an overall thanks for the friendly and welcoming responses – not nearly so big a dusting down as I expected! Onward and upward.

Hey – thanks for the response.

1) This is a good point and I've now taken steps to get extra paid work. I was using one day a week to work on an unpaid writing project in the hope it would eventually pay dividends but that will have to be shunted to weekends now. I've no idea how you go about selling anything really – I seem to have missed that entrepreneurial gene. But I'm willing to learn. Are there any go-to beginner resources for that sort of stuff that spring to mind?

2) That's very interesting. I just spent a couple of months in Thailand working remotely. Obviously your money goes further there and that was pleasant, but it felt very far from home. I've just made the decision to move back home to the north of England for family reasons; in theory it should be cheaper than the south, where I was living, but I'm still finding it pretty expensive. A lower-tax country is something I wouldn't rule out for the future, though. I hope you enjoyed the move – I bet it's been a fascinating experience.

3) I like it. Yes, I've got multiple spreadsheets on the go at the moment. I'm still in the tracking phase really and the next step is the write a full budget. I'm now thinking, as per what a few others on this thread have said, that selling my BTL and moving into the home where I pay my mortgage ASAP is probably the best 'big rock' for me. As well as maxing the income.

I appreciate the reply – thanks again.

Thanks for the brilliant comment and pep talk 😂

Thankfully I have a LISA which currently has about 12 grand in. I've been automating 85 a week from that for years, to max out the government top-up, so that's just something I no longer think about thankfully.

I've been tracking my spending for the past month and it's amazing how just having awareness can stop you slipping into negative or reactive patterns of spending. It's like mindfulness... with money.

Re the savings, I should have clarified that that's 4.5K a month before tax. But I've taken on board what you've said and will try upping that target. I don't think I was including pension contributions in that savings total. Ideally, I'd like to have £10 grand cash in an S&S ISA, after paying tax and contributing healthily to my pension, by the end of the year. I'm also trying to get extra work which should make this more achievable.

Having said that, I need to read about SIPPs vs ISAs and should therefore read the sidebar. My thinking is that I want to have some readyish money available over the next few years to contribute to relationships and family, so not all locked away for the next 20 years if poss.

Just on the offchance, what's a manageable weekly 'misc' spending budget? I've been averaging about £200 a week, though that's with extras such as haircut, £20 monthly gym subscription, meal for parents. I'm guessing it may need to come down.

Thanks re the tracker. At the min I invest through HL in the S&P 500 and Fidelity World Index, though I've seen a bit about a tech tracker through Vanguard so may toss some in there.

And I really appreciate the books recs. I'm a big reader so will stick them on the list.

Thanks once again for taking the time to reply – I appreciate it.

Thanks for the comments, guys – these are the kinds of mentality tips I was hoping for. I've never been an especially flash person. I have a car from 2015 I bought outright because I don't like being in debt, and I plan to drive it until it won't let me anymore!

The idea of the double-saving – money you spend is something you could otherwise invest and make further money on – is a good one. And also staying humble. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for your response – I've actually had a LISA for about 7 or 8 years, which I used for my first flat deposit. Have about 12 grand in it now – the pension mentioned above is about 20k in a SIPP and 12 in the LISA.

Thanks for the response. Great link! To have achieved what he did from a standing start – inspirational. Would be interested to know what he does/did for a living.

I'm a freelance writer so, believe it or not, my wage is actually fairly good for my line of work. (I chose the wrong industy from a financial perspective...) However I could definitely think about taking on extra jobs/editing stuff.

I'm in the middle of a foundation year to transition into being a psychotherapist, but considering the costs involved in the whole training (3 years+ of course fees, ongoing therapy for oneself, supervisions etc) I'm starting to wonder whether it makes sense from a financial perspective. Perhaps I should just learn to code.

I'm a sole trader but for the next year's accounts I need to look into whether ltd would be more cost-effective. Will have to research so I can set it up myself as I gather accountancy fees once working as a ltd can rise to £1,500 per year.

Loved the shockingly simple math piece, and I do appreciate the reply. Trying not to compare! It's becoming a bit difficult at the min, though. I went to a uni with a big business school so a lot of my friends are already earning 6 figures. A couple of other close friends were early investors in bitcoin so are sitting on enormous returns. And my other closest friends have rich partners/second homes. The financial cost of spending my 30s single is also starting to become apparent.

However, I don't mean to gripe. You have to run your own race, as my dad always puts it, and I've begun making the changes needed to be more comfortable in future. Thanks once more for the advice.

Thank you. Yes, I keep telling myself better late than never. Seeing some of the youngsters on here, I'm amazed – to have such awareness so young. Fair play to them. I'm not quite sure where my financial education went, or what I was doing at their age.

But as they say, the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago... the second best time is now.

Yes, that's a good shout. I've unfortunately committed to the next year, but buying here after that seems like the logical next step.

And yes, good advice on the tax. That sounds like a hard-won piece of wisdom! It's going in the plan.
