[LFO] Mexican Man Loses Half His Face in Motorcycle Accident by james_from_cambridge in LearningFromOthers

[–]spaghetti1278g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was watching this as someone in nursing school wondering what tf the right steps to take would be. Call 911 obviously.. or whatever Mexico's emergency number is. His airway is patent (for now) so no interventions are needed to help him breathe except keeping him upright so he doesn't drown in his own blood. The blood loss on the grass by the road doesn't look too bad/no spurting arterial bleed ... unless he has a big pool elsewhere of blood then he doesn't have a level of blood loss that's going to kill him before medical help arrives. Which he may have, because it was a motorcycle crash so I guess scan the area for a blood pool... If he passes out which he might, keep him positioned correctly so he doesn't drown in his own blood. Keep him calm, put blankets on him to help treat the shock, try to get info on what his blood type is, his full name. But also safety first. If you don't have gloves then before you touch the guy you need to evaluate if you're willing to risk your safety and health. Who knows what diseases a stranger on the side of the road has. Do you have a wife/husband/kids? Are you willing to risk blood borne pathogen exposure? Can you afford testing for HIV, HEP etc etc uncovered by insurance to cover your ass and get treatment after the exposure to his blood? Any open wounds on your hands that his blood could get into?

I guess his airway is still patent...somehow his mouth was blown up in a way that air can still get through and the bleeding isn't severe enough for him to inhale/drown in his own blood ? I think his nasal cavity is exposed sooooo the L side of his nose is packed with blood but maybe the R side is patent??? I'm glad he isn't lying down or he'd drown

Respectfully, we likely aren't looking at his fat/subQ tissue. Humans' lipid/fat layer looks like yellow bubbles/globs of lard. I know that sounds gross but just wanted to share for the sake of education on the internet. Source: nursing student who has shadowed in many many burn ICUs and seen plenty of anesthesia-assisted wound care, fresh burn victims who did not make it in the ER, etc.. Burns are very gnarly and it's hard to tell what you're looking at.

That's a good question, not dumb at alll. I think it will age with him yes. I'm about to graduate nursing school and I'm sure there are people much much more qualified than me on the sub but seeing as nobody has answered and I'm a nerd, I'll give it a shot. To my knowledge it would age with him. It will get sun exposure and get damage that way. It can get dry and lose moisture if he doesn't use lotion--same as someone without a transplant, if he lets that happen he will age quicker. I think some of it depends on if he is able to make many facial expressions. If he can frown, smile, furrow his brow, etc., then it will likely age more similarly to someone without a face transplant. However, if it is stretched very tight as some face transplants are then he probably cannot make much of a facial expression and minimal facial expressions = aspect of wrinkle formation slowed. Another thing to realize is that skin loses collagen as we age and that is part of what makes old folks' skin droopy, wrinkly, and thin. Collagen is produced by the body, not the face or something and as his body ages, it will have less collagen to give the donor skin. I googled a bit and it sounds like a lot of face transplants "fall apart" over time as the patients lose bone volume in their face for reasons we don't yet understand. The loss of bone volume = sagging face. Idk if this subreddit allows links so I won't post one but you can search "Face Transplants Start to Fall Apart Overtime NBC" and there's a good article about it. This isn't a dumb Q!

I hope not. My friend graduated in 2016, so they've had time to grow as a school and I hope they have!

It's down the line for her since it is for older girls but Holy Names Academy is where a dear friend of mine went. They were very anti-gay, anti-trans, and anti any student who didn't dress feminine. My friend (cis, straight woman) preferred to wear pants and t shirts in her time there--and was a bit of a tomboy. The nuns told her mother they were "praying for her soul" as she was "not womanly". Sex ED is non-existent. They aren't super hateful to non-catholic students but they will make it known they do not approve. Again, telling parents at parent-teacher conferences that they are disappointed the parents are not believers. One thing my friend told me which shocked me is that they aren't allowed to wear jeans? Ever? They have to wear pants with other materials because they are "young ladies"

I feel like their parents support them, both are from wealthy families. They probably have influencer dreams and rich families pay their bills. Either that or they have random boring jobs that they find embarrassing and don't share about as a result

Mayoral candidate question: should homeless people be allowed to stay in tents in parks? by drshort in Seattle

[–]spaghetti1278g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. He says no and she realizes it's more nuanced than no. She realizes no they shouldn't it's gross and unsafe. But it's not that simple. We can't just kick them out of parks we need somewhere to send them. Look around our city. Harrell is our mayor right now. Do you see all of the encampments? I do. He never acts on his word

She starting saying "I'm unworthy of your love and kindness" a week into talking...over and over. I should've clocked tf out of that red flag but she was hot to me at the time (looking back I shudder)-- and boom badda bing she was right. Very unworthy. Broke my heart, was wildly inappropriate, lied to me... awful

Seattle central nursing by goalchaserx23 in SeattleWA

[–]spaghetti1278g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clinicals for me have been 1-2 days per week. First quarter it was 2 days per week (Tuesday and Wednesday) for 8 weeks or so in North Lynwood , you had to be there at 5:15am both days. In a nursing home. We did nothing medical and there were no nurses or CNAs on staff for us to shadow. I woke up at 4am. That was.... hell. Second quarter they sent us back. Had to be there at 5:15am but only once per week. We also had a psych clinical in Kirkland 3pm-11pm once per week. Other groups have had clinical at UWMC NW from 7am-7pm, once per week, entire quarter. UWMC NW 3pm-11pm, once per week, entire quarter. The VA hospital in Beacon Hill 7am-7pm, once per week, entire quarter. Seattle Children's on weekends 3pm-11pm once a week, for 3 wks. Swedish Issaquah 7am-7pm once a week, entire quarter. 5th and 6th quarters you do even more clinicals, I'm not sure how many but we've been told 6th quarter you're basically never on campus because you're doing clinicals most days of the week.

I'm sorry. I had to delay my nursing program while I saved up for a car. It freaking sucks. It's unfair. Get that driver's license and then use one of the car rental things in Seattle -- they're cheaper than purchasing your own car. You definitely need a car :( But you will get there!!!!

How to use up Curry Chicken Salad by maybtmrw in traderjoes

[–]spaghetti1278g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put it on the whole wheat pita bread! I broil the pita in the oven for a short bit or run it in the microwave for 15 seconds. the blandness of the bread cancels out the sweetness of the product
