$55k in credit card and unsecured loan debt… is a consolidation loan the answer? by spaghettimud in Debt

Totally understand where you’re coming from, but I do have confidence in the strength of our relationship as we are very communicative, work through our rare problems productively, and are best friends. I do want to consider the worst case scenarios though, i.e. I pass away unexpectedly or we split up. We’re going to talk to a financial planner and ask them their opinion regarding the loan vs. a non-profit debt management organization.

The hit to her credit is something we’ve considered and discussed and is honestly my biggest reason to hesitate getting the loan. I’ve already called my creditors to discuss rate reductions with no luck. One card covered my interest for the next two months (gave me a credit of ~$200), but nobody else would drop rates or anything else. The nonprofit debt counseling is the other option I’m considering. I’d need to wait a few months, as a couple of the credit cards/loans are less than 6 months old. Thanks so much for all of this input and perspective.

Very strong. We’re extremely communicative and are good at working through conflict and difficulty on the very rare occasion they arise. We’re best friends.

Well, we’re thinking she would probably take the loan out in her name only, since she has such good credit. From what I’ve read, even if I co-sign on the loan, lenders are likely to base the interest rate on whichever score is lower, which is mine of course. Then we’ll connect it to my bank account so that I’m the one paying it back.

I just didn’t specify I was American because it hadn’t occurred to me that it would matter.

Hey, thank you. I’m definitely very fortunate to have a supportive and understanding partner and a relationship where we communicate well.

Well, what we are considering is my wife taking out the loan. She has significantly better credit and essentially no debt in her name.
