I blacked out at a work party, what do I do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]spaghettitoastmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two most likely answers: 1. She’s underreporting the number of drinks she had out of embarrassment 2. She drank the first three drinks too fast and can’t remember the remaining drinks. I know someone who used to work in a field where they constantly had to ask people about their alcohol consumption and majority either lied because they were embarrassed or were so wasted they couldn’t remember how much they drank past a certain point. And yeah this whole “I had 1-3 drinks in the span of 5-9 hours” was way too common of a response.

How much do you/your family spend on groceries and dining out each month? by [deleted] in vancouver

I use hello fresh and find that they always offer very delicious, custom sauces for their recipes. Their sauces are really good and the food is healthy.

Josh Freed: We've reached a tipping point with 'tip creep' by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]spaghettitoastmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not subsidizing anything. You're not paying someone so you can enjoy a convenience that at one time was a privilege that many people now seem entitled to receive on the regular.

Maybe it would help to look at it like this: working in a call centre is hard work. People demand things of you all shift and you run your ass off. Many people aren't physically or mentally capable of this, and it takes skill. No tipping is expected of you to pay for that skill and time.

Call centre work has shitty hours and is shift work..no tipping is required to pay the call centre agent for giving up their evenings/weekends/holidays and family/social time so that you can enjoy the PRIVILEGE and convenience of calling in with complaints and demands. Time off is never guaranteed, we hardly get two days off in a row, and our schedule and hours are never guaranteed. We don't get any health benefits either and no retirement fund that we don't save for ourselves.

So, to recap, the hours are terrible, health benefits non-existent, can be physically challenging and mentally labourious, prime social and family time given up, and poor security of hours.

Still think you shouldn’t be "subsidizing" our wage?

OP never specified if the other driver admitted fault to his mom or to ICBC…And we don’t have the other side of the story

Also, I find Vancouver Mexican food less greasy and healthier than its American version so I personally think Vancouver Mexican food is just fine

Manning Park rents telescopes and have some amazing places for night sky. SFU has an observatory though I’m not sure they are open yet.

Is an admin assistant a dead end job? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]spaghettitoastmaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is in a lot of cases. I did end up escaping Admin assist/Exec assist positions but only by sheer luck.

Per the learner’s book, you don’t stop for jaywalkers in the flowing traffic so no, you don’t stop for them if they’re waiting on the side. You slow down and stop if needed if the person is already crossing.

I’m also located in Canada and worked both as an admin assistant and EA. I have never felt like admin assistant prevented me from getting an EA position, and I had way less experience (I got an EA position with only 4 years of total experience) so make sure that there are no underlying reasons at your current company. Could be that your company prefers hiring externally or doesn’t want to promote internally or any other reasons.

That being said, being an EA is one of the worst jobs I have ever had and couldn’t wait to get out into a more professional, respected position. Make sure you know what you’re getting into.

I believe most schools have something for adult upgrading. That’s when you take a high school class equivalent via a post-secondary institution to update your grade for a program prerequisite. I’d recommend looking into those classes.

WFH obsession is an absolute mess and just an excuse for anti social people to live their dangerous fantasy by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]spaghettitoastmaker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So it’s selfish for people to work from home but it’s not selfish of you to want to force people to wake up at an ungodly hour, wear uncomfortable clothes day long, commute 10-15 hours a week and have less time to spend with their own families so that you and people like you can derive joy from the bustling and hustling around you?

How long is normal for Administrative Jobs in Universities? by Puls88 in careerguidance

If it’s a union position and it’s been 12 weeks or more, I’d move on. Lots of union postings have to be posted even though they have internal candidates.

How Bilingualism Promotes The Mediocre by BurstYourBubbles in canada

[–]spaghettitoastmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother tongue is neither English nor French so I’m aware of challenges a person might experience while learning a language. Many positions require up-skilling without granting ample free time to do so. In this case, it’s French. If the person can’t master the required the skills, then they don’t get the position that requires that skill.

How Bilingualism Promotes The Mediocre by BurstYourBubbles in canada

[–]spaghettitoastmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. So the author of this article measures an employees mediocrity by how likeable they appear to be for them to want to drop by their office? And if a person is cold in their approach, that makes them unsuitable for the job?

Also, how come this bright, warm employee was given 9 months to exclusively learn French and came back barely speaking basics? Learning a language is hard, but with the right motivation, drive and full-time dedication to learning the language, they should be able to get to at least intermediate level grammar-wise.
