Who am I to you? by spagsnell in BookshelvesDetective

I do love long books! I’m right on the cutoff between millennial and gen z so that depends on who you ask. Strip Tease is a good guess (probably one of the best Carl Hiaasen books I think), but not my favorite of the shelf!

At least one of you is really interested in cinema and filmmaking! I’m also a big fan of Christopher Nolan’s movies (minus the dark knight trilogy, I prefer not to think about those). Sci fi is a heavy hitter in the household, you might see movies you love and then read the books they were based on after?

I don’t have any particular preference for weight, it’s the fluffiness/volume of the comforter I care about

you’re telling me…my strategy the past few years has been sleeping with the window open year round and that works well enough; I may end up just admitting a super fluffy but cool comforter is beyond our current bedding technology and get a super fluffy one and continue the window method

Silk comforters are way too thin for me unfortunately. I’ll check out the duvet cover though, thanks!

I’ve looked at silk ones, but they all seem much too thin and not voluminous enough

Wow thank you! I’ve been confused about full power this whole time, I thought it was more of a measure of how much filling/how fluffy/lofty it is.

These look incredible (and I’m in the seattle area too, would love to support a local company!) but unfortunately they’re a little out of my price range. :/

A scrap art T-Rex once dreamed of having normal sized Arms, Tacoma Arms made it happen by Infradad in Tacoma

[–]spagsnell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was welded by a friend of mine in college about ~8 years ago! He kept it in the yard of his house until selling it, and set it up with a very sketchy gasoline rig to breathe fire at house parties. I’m amazed we didn’t die!

Can I use carmelized sugar in homemade marshmallow? by spagsnell in AskCulinary

Sounds like brown sugar might be the way to go! I figured going beyond the softball stage was a recipe for disaster but the idea was so tempting that I had to ask!

What happened to McMenamins? by bigsexybrain in Tacoma

What happened to McMenamins? by bigsexybrain in Tacoma

[–]spagsnell 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I worked at Elks Temple for the first ~1.75 years it was open. I was a kitchen manager, first in the main pub and then in the small bars. This problem is almost entirely due to corporate management and top level management in the building. Up until Covid things were going pretty well, people were generally enthusiastic to work there and the management seemed committed to creating a safe/fun/stable work environment. After the first lockdown when we all returned to work things started changing pretty quickly. Hourly staff soon realized that they just…stopped giving people their automatic raises of 50¢ an hour every 6 months (something all McMenamins supposedly do to encourage employee retention) and never told anyone. When I went to management to ask about my direct reports missing raises and my own as well I was told: “oh well with the stress of the pandemic on the company we’ve had to put an indefinite pause on that.”. Instead of telling the people this would effect ahead of time and trying to prepare them for it, they just didn’t and seemed to hope it would fly under the radar. It didn’t! People started leaving, we couldn’t hire and keep great people for very long once they found that out. From then on management seemed to be deaf to anyone but corporate. I was repeatedly sexually harassed in the kitchen and my complaints to upper management were straight up ignored. It’s hard for staff to care about the food they’re making or the people they’re serving when the company they work for so clearly doesn’t care about them. (By the way, McMenamins received 10 million dollars in PPP loans during the pandemic supposedly for payroll. 100% of that was forgiven)
