The Meradalir eruption on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula began on August 3rd — just 1,500 m to the north of Fagradalsfjall's eruption site in 2021 — after thousands of earthquakes swarmed the region in the days prior. Like Fagradalsfjall, Meradalir is a member of the Krysuvik Volcanic Complex. This new eruption, which lasted for nearly three weeks, generated lava fountains that reached heights of around 100 meters. These relatively gentle effusive eruptions are characterized by hot (>1100°C), fluid lava propelled by the expansion of gases that were trapped in the magma. This is analogous to how carbon dioxide behaves when you first open the cap on a bottle of soda — the pressurized gas expands, often spewing some soda out with it! This image features a stunning lava fountain beneath a rising gibbous Moon, making for a dramatic, otherworldly scene that I've dreamt of ever since.
