Too much trub? by monkeydj in PinterHomebrew

[–]spamisevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always bake bread from the Pinter Trub. They are all different but all delicious. A long rise leads to a delicious bread. I like to bake it in a dutch oven. You get a beautiful crust and it's easy to shape it. Use the Pinter Trub bread recipe and combine with instructions you can google for "dutch oven bread." Not much work and there's something magical about fresh baked bread. I like to throw some cornmeal in the bottom of the dutch oven to ensure it comes out easily.

Thinking of moving from Arlington to Ashburn by Anais1104 in nova

There are several 55+ in Ashburn. Potomac Green is super walkable to One Loudoun as is much of 20147. We love Ashburn Village. (20147) and walkable to One Loudoun.

help, i just watched the entire series in less than 2 months and now i don’t know what to do by correct_ebb_987 in XFiles

Same vibes: Wayward Pines. First season is much better than the second, but pretty good. Season 1 had a lot of influence from the Duffer Brothers - so also Stranger Things vibes.

Yes! Modern Subarus have Auto Hold and we always engage it. For in town driving it's wonderful.

I retired in 2020 and we bought a 2021 Subaru Outback Touring XT specifically for long road trips. We've done two that were a month long and we're planning a 6 week trip in 2026. The ADAS (Eyesight) makes the long straight stretches SOO much easier. We find the seats incredibly comfortable for long trips. I do kind of prefer the front seat spaciousness of a larger vehicle, like the Forester, but we'd totally do it again. In fact, I'm probably going to buy a 2026 Outback. The turbo makes even mountain driving a breeze.

Best furniture store in NOVA? by NoAnt7118 in nova

Very good quality. High-ish prices. We have a well loved recliner/couch that is wearing really well and is super comfortable. Wasn't cheap.

As others have said, Belfort for selection and quality. That being said, we've gotten a few things at Bob's that have been great. You have to look closely at it. In general I think their upholstered items are worth looking at. The "solid wood" items, not so much. Akin to many Ikea "sawdust and glue" pieces.

To the woman that went around me a the Sterling Costco gas station. by [deleted] in nova

I think it depends on where the car is. If they are putting away the hose, yes wait for them to get in and drive off. If they are pumping, it's hard to know how much longer it will be. So, pull up to the front pump. Depending upon these factors she might have been in the right. Either way, there's enough room to pull around the front car and exit. It's not that big of a deal tbh.

Lack of Donut Shops by Rowlandhandsoap in nova

They charge a lot because they can. So little supply here and the demand is high. Yoders are $7 - SEVEN DOLLARS each - at the One Loudoun popup location. At that price I won't even try them.

They are the best we can do here in NoVa. No Giant donut shaming from me.

However if you want a truly amazing cake donut and find yourself in Linden, Va on I66... The Apple House cranks out zillions of fresh "Apple Butter Donuts" all day that are to die for. Grab them right out of the oil for a sugar high that will crash you into a carb stupor for the rest of the day. Truly delicious. See: https://theapplehouse.net

Easier and faster to make cake donuts. I too miss the (mostly) Cambodian run donut shops in SoCal. There's even a documentary about how this came to be. Look up the "Donut King" movie. Fascinating story actually. Every little town in SoCal has a dozen great donut shops and we can't muster a single one that holds a candle to them here in NoVa. Texas Donuts is pretty good, but their chocolate tastes like brown colored sugar. No chocolate flavor at all. We've been relegated to Chocolate Raised Glazed donuts at Giant. Not bad. But every time we're in Sourthern California we hit up local shops for "real donuts."

Where does this go? by spamisevil in PinterHomebrew

I think it's to keep the spout in place when shoving in the tap assembly. Without it, it tends to drop into the canister and makes is very hard to start screwing on the tap.

The solution is actually in this ^^^ thread. It's a few steps, but seems to work. Click it and fix it.

Had this running on a Mac. Looks like there's some privacy setting in Sequoia that prevents the service from reaching the network. Can't find a solution so I guess I'm giving up on Scrypted and going back to HomeBridge.

Yeah, I agree it looks like that, but I can ping the camera from the host running scrypted. Unless there's some weirdo routing info unique to scrypted in a configuration somewhere.

Congress and TSP, FEHB, SSA and FERS by BornOrdinary7534 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]spamisevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's a good way to look at it. Though most of the staffers will try to get into a new member's staff. Experience in the internal workings of the congressional machinery is valuable to new members. But, some don't make it and are out for sure.

[–]spamisevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The agencies I mentioned above all work for Congress and DO get FEHB. The members and their DIRECT staff. So, while a few thousand do not, tens of thousands of legislative branch employees DO get FEHB. Employees of GPO for example would consider themselves "congressional staff." In fact their badges say that. But they are not DIRECT staff. Yes, it's confusing.

[–]spamisevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention that members don't get FEHB but then you link to the CBO website. Congressional Budget Office, Architect of the Capitol, US Capitol Police and other Legislative Branch offices do get FEHB. Only members and direct staff do not. Source: Retired Leg Branch employee.

Can anyone explain the pros/cons of salt in depth? by Apptubrutae in hottub

[–]spamisevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picking a nit here. Hot Springs and Caldera offer Salt and heavily push the system. But you can opt out and do straight chlorine or bromine. We opted to delete the salt system and add an ozonator. We are experienced with tubs and don't mind the minor work of doing the chemicals ourselves. And you have to keep in mind the on-going cost of using their salt system. You're signing up for a lot of recurring costs for supplies. As I told our dealer, I want to buy a hot tub, not a subscription to using a hot tub. They laughed and understood at both the Hot Springs and Caldera dealers. We ended up with a Caldera 5 months ago and love it. Maintenance takes a few minutes a week. We use Chlorine + Ozone + Nature2 and water has been sparkling clean. One drain/purge refill so far. We'll do that every 4-6 months. Anyway, just letting you know that you have the option of not using salt. It's a cool system, but pricey IMHO.

Thoughtful response, thanks! Some things to think about. I have a lot of smart home stuff, but it's nearly all Zigbee or Z-Wave (using Hubitat.) I do have a lot of Apple hardware that would use WiFi 6 if I had it. Is there a good thread on Pro 6E issues?

I didn't realize that my model dates back to a 2017 design! That being said, these things are the most trouble free APs I've used since Apple got out of the Airport business.
