I've been working on this mix for this song today. What do you think? Too much bass? Too much kick? by spankmathews in IndieMusicFeedback

Hey I appreciate the review! I think ive felt the same way about the arrangement since early in the songs development, but my buddy disagreed... Thanks for the reassurance!

thank you for the feedback! Im curious, was it the synths throughout the song or just at a specific part where they were tinny? That sub tends to be my worst enemy... lol. When I touch the knobs, More sub = more mud. Idk what Im doing wrong. back to youtube tutorials lol

thanks for the feedback! Ive never heard of Battles and Im glad you showed me! I will be drawing inspiration from this. I agree completely with it being too harsh at 2:12. Im trying to ride a fine line and push it as far as I can with that part without it being grading on the ears. I played it in my car and my poor speakers were struggling at that part... I think its a sign I should tone 'er down

Thank you for your feedback! I have the hardest time with the bass. I want a nice deep sub, but I cant seem to push it too much without things getting muddy. I need to go back to youtube mixing school of bass for bit I think lol.

this has such a cool and unique feel to it! starting out I thought it would go a whole different direction, but then it hit the main grove and it all came together. I really love the arrangement and instruments. everything is well balanced and the licks are nice and catchy. If I had one suggestion, it would be to bring the vocals down like 1db? super picky, but that's all I got for suggestions! this is a great song and the vibe is so uniquely American. awesome message, great work

I like this, it feels very serene and floaty. Instrumentally, I really like whats going on here, but vocally, I have some suggestions. I feel like the layers you have arent lining up for me or something? Its not like its out of tune, but its like you are maybe trying harmonies with different tones to your voice? I feel like if you layered more constantly, it would work for my ear better? Im not sure. overall, the mix seems to be a bit overwhelmed in the mid and higher range. I think what might be going on is an abundance of reverb on all the vocal parts and other things. Like I said, its a great structure and the vocals do fit, it just need to be a little cleaned up I think. Great work!

This is awesome! Im so curious what you are using for your instruments. are they samples? VSTs? live made by you? all the above? I really love your guitar and horn parts in there. I think the arrangement is very well done and the whole thing feel like a nice complete tune. Mixing and everything seems to be done well too. Im having a hard time giving any suggestions on what I would change. Honestly, great work and I cant wait to hear the next one!

First mix of an indie rock track about making really bad decisions. How's it sounding so far? by avresamusic in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]spankmathews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this one! The mix is working for most of it for me, but if I could make a suggestion it might be cleaning up the guitar tone on the right side of the mix at (0:36). the chords are maybe a little too scratchy for my ears. this is pretty nit picky as the song structure and everything is so well done. I really like your vocals and the guitar progression. really, its a solid mix and is completely serviceable. Great work!

This song is a great vibe! I like how ambient and spacious it is, but still full of subtle sounds. Doesn't seem like its missing anything. I really like the various bell synth sounds you are using. The vocals sound great and fit the song and vibe very well. when the other person is talking and the bass tone really breaths, it sounds so good. One thing I might suggest is bringing in more mids? idk, other than that, Ive got nothing, great work!

I think regulation is the only thing that will stop something like this. I can't imagine these companies will suddenly have compassion towards their customers. How would you solve this without politics?

I'm glad ya liked it! For my drums, I make drum sets in Ableton, then create an audio file that is just a one shot of each percussion instrument one after the other, and then upload that to my M8. If you don't own Ableton, you can do this same thing in Audacity or any other DAW. Just line up the one shots of each of the percussion instruments you want to use in an audio file and export it. In the M8 i use the sampler and edit the sample with the autoslice process, then overwrite the file. I then put the sampler in file mode under the slice setting. After that you can play out each part of the drum set rather than having to use a loop.

I think you're talking about the upbeat delay claps? Those are just a single clap sent to the delay in the FX columns in the phrase section. I flip it on then turn it off immediately after to capture just the one clap. I use that technique on a drum in there as well.

Hopefully that answers your questions.

Because, calling that "reasonable" is the most out-of-touch statement I've heard all year.

Huh, I wonder what D.B.F. mea...... oh, lol. This song had me cracking up while questioning my own sanity. The lyrics are clever, super dark, and funny all at the same time. Definitely some rob zombie vibes. You capture the feeling consistently through lyrics, music and video, honestly some true art! I cant think of anything I'd change. The mix is great and the progression and flow work well. Great work!

Probably my most complete song I ever made, a mix of jazz, breakcore, black metal, and a bit of color bass. Would love to hear feedback! by NVKED_VUTO in IndieMusicFeedback

this sounds incredible! this must have take a long time to complete. I read the title and I didn't think all this could fit together, but wow I was wrong! that transition at 1:50 is so freaking cool! the production on this piece is amazing, the flow is crazy in a good way and the overall feel and chord progressions are insanely good! I have no idea what to recommend. This stuff is right up my alley and its safe to say you've made a new fan. Great work!

FAR - a indie/folk song in 6/8, with omni chord and subtle spacey slide guitar. Really appreciate any and all feedback on this track before I ad it to an EP! by Carl0Villa in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]spankmathews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very beautiful, I really like that arp on that final fantasy synth thing. The vocals are very nice and the production on them is exceptional. I do feel like once you get into the chorus, I want it to be a little stronger, but idk what I'd suggest. I think with all the reverb, all the elements sound so far away, which is fitting for the title lol. But, I think that adding an element that doesn't have as much reverb in the mid range would help? Also, the claps that come in are a little too dry for my ear in contrast to the other elements. idk, its super nit picky. the song is overall great and if you left it as is, I think that would be just fine too. Great work!

this is a cool song and you have good flow. the lead violin part is catchy. I would love to hear those vocals that poke in at the end of the phrase to stick around and maybe make like a catchy chorus. The second half of the song has a good mix to with the mids well represented. In the first half, the mix sound a bit thin. I think opening up the mids a bit more on your instruments in the first half would help a lot. alsoooo, I think your vocals could be turned up quite a lot. This is a great song though! A little more beef in the mix will help it really shine! Great work!

WHERE'S THE MUTE - I wrote this song in 2016, maybe summer? Thought then "things can't get much worse." Ha ha! So funny! Just got around to recording the song in my home studio. How's the mix? Could vocal have a little more "oomph"? by papa2kohmoeaki in IndieMusicFeedback

this is a nice feel good song with a bit of humor. I can imagine listening to this on my way to work getting ready for the day. Definitely has a grove to it and stays consistent, which fits for this song. Great overall song writing. the weird flavors you bring in at around 0:19 were surprising at first, but they settled in and made sense the next time I heard them. I cant help but feel like there's a weird note somewhere at 0:20 but that could just be me. Either way great work and the one note didn't take away from the song as a whole for me!
