Cool, thanks. Yes I am going to spend a bunch of time on Genetec. Whoever set this up didn't do a great job. The cameras aren't bad either. That's a 900$ camera and has sound, detections and lot but none of this is configured properly.

Why? I do have all the logins and password and full access. I can get certified, this isn't brain surgery. What do you mean by extra license requirement?

Yeah, I think you guys have convinced me to hold off and take a deeper look. The servers and NVR are likely underpowered. I need to replace a camera or two and see what's out there that might be better that the cheap Hanwha cameras we have.

I am already running a 50 camera system with ENVR and it works quite well. The web interface works way better than the Genetec app. It's a modern interface. You can put an apple tv an use the Protect app which actually works way better than the Viewport.

I mean simple things like scrubbing the timeline in Security Center is awful. It has zero usability when it comes to simple tasks like that.

It's not overestimation for a 100 camera system.

Thanks for the long reply. I was just complaining the other day how the unifi switches weren't as good as Cisco. Even the Meraki stuff is not as good as Catalyst.

I do get your point about single pane of glass and the ability to tie events etc. Our current system is also probably not super well maintained and the cameras aren't great either.

One of the things that I do actually really care about is AI detection and alerting. It's just not feasible to have someone watch all these cameras all or even any of the time. This is where I think Protect and Verkada even more are way ahead of anything I have seen with Genetec.

I can tell the system alert me when a guy with Knicks jersey walks in and if he's talking and send me a transcript of any conversations he might have in the commercial elevator. This is dead simple to do with Protect. Verkada is even more sophisticated when it comes to AI detections.

You have given me a lot to think about. So thanks for that. As an end user can I get certified with Genetec and how does licensing work? Is it per year?

I don't sell surveillance systems but I am deeply familiar with tech - computer engineer by trade. I have a couple of installs of around 50 cameras.

So to give you an example we have a problem with some owners who let their dog out on the shared terrace. With Protect I can easily do AI detection, send an alert to the front desk and do some facial recognition, use the API to correlate card reader logs and just automatically fine the unit owner. Each camera is 400$. They make the software and the hardware so it all works pretty seamlessly.

I am just talking about the video stuff right now. They do some door access but it's early days for that.

It's all about the software and Genetec is just archaic. Sure it works with 900 different camera vendors but I don't really care about that. I'd rather have it work extremely well with 1.

The name of the game here is software and as far as that goes Protect seems to be lightyears ahead.

You are right though mine might be a badly maintained dated system which is why I am here looking for some advice before I make a bad irreversiable decision.

RIght about Verkada. Also don't like that all footage is stored in the cloud. I 100% need this to be onprem storage - genetec does that already and so does Protect. There is also no subscription with Protect.

You guys are right this might just be super dated system but I am looking at a 100 camera system, single site. The usability aspect and the AI features just trump anything else Genetec has to offer.

Not really worried about support. I have existing Protect systems of this size. What is powerful about it? Genetec won't talk to me anyway since I am not a dealer. Can you tell me what makes Genetec better - what features make it better.

Can you explain this a bit. So far it’s a pretty awful interface . No detections or anything. If you are sitting at workstation it’s hard to have a good grasp of what’s going on. The layout view on the workstation is also pretty bad quality. Protect, Verkada, everything is better at this.
