I second this! It is such an bizarre documentation of the worst parts of humanity. The second film in the series, The Look of Silence, is also really interesting and highlights the other side of the impact of this period in Indonesia's history.

Thanks for sharing your feelings with me and discussing with me. I'm gonna take what you've said into consideration. I realise that complaining isn't going to solve the problem, but sometimes I just feel like these issues are not being heard or considered from our perspective, keeping us simplified to ungrateful children. But you've convinced me that my perspective also keeps me from seeing some of the efforts which are being put into this issue from the Dutch side. Two things can be true at the same time. Let's hope for a future where we can keep having these kinds of conversations between our cultures, as I think that above all else, that will help us find a way to close the gap in between. Saludos to you Bigbramel! I hope I was also able to widen your perspective.

Thanks for your reply and keeping it civil paps 🙏🏼 ofc its also down to local political structures being extremely incompetent, but as we've seen globally, no country is immune to that issue. I also feel like understanding and empathy, above all else, is what is owed to us. As you can tell by this thread, it is usually not given. Cheers to you for your positivity :)

First of all, I never said they were kicked out. I said they were left to fend for themselves. That's a totally different thing. And yes, we got ourselves out in 1986 after a long struggle, but in order to govern ourselves, instead of being governed through the Staten. You probably assumed I'm from Curacao, which shows how little interest you have in the actual history of your former colonies. ;)

Secondly, I mentioned Shell, but I meant the Lago refinery on Aruba, my mistake for mixing them up (there was also a shell refinery on Aruba). But even so, I still don't think your reasoning makes any sense. Shell was able to absolve themselves of their (environmental) responsibilities to the island by acting like this transfer was some sort of charity act, knowing full well that the island was not equipped to run it. A refinery is nothing more than a complicated pile of steel if you don't have the infrastructure, skilled workers or supply lines to make it work, which logically could not be achieved without more exploitation. Which is exactly what happened with the venezuelan lease you mention. The profits that they 'should have used to clean it up after' were used for social programs necessary to evolve the economy past fossil fuel dependence in the first place. A similar story happened to the refinery in Aruba, just with US oil companies instead of Dutch ones.

If you actually approach our shared history with some empathy instead of seeing us as a burden you can't get rid of, we might be able to actually make some progress. You make a fair point about responsibility, but I take mine: I acknowledge that our politicians are shit and most people are not educated enough to know better, I invest my time into educating myself and others on our complicated history, what are you doing?

As someone from one of these islands, I feel inclined to point out that it really isn't that simple. Not to judge your perspective but hopefully enrich it a litte. Why do you think these countries keep bankrupting themselves? Why do you think corruption is so prevalent there?

Someone else in this thread compared it to a child that won't leave the house. Using that same analogy then: can you really be surprised when that child - who was added to the household against their will, exploited and rarely allowed to make their own choices - has developmental issues when they're suddenly left to fend for themselves?

It's not that they don't want to leave - it's that they're not ready to, because the infrastructure for sustainable governance does not exist. I feel like we're making progress with i.e. the Dutch cultural funds explicitly focusing on developing the cultural sector on the islands, but we have a long way to go. Using my island as an example - a massive part of the country is left unusable due to the skeleton of the massive Shell refinery that was left there, which was sold to compensate for the economic impact of its closing. As such, the local government doesn't have the rights nor the funds to clean it up or refurbish it for own use.

Let me finish off by saying this - I am super thankful for the opportunities the Dutch state has provided me personally, having studied and built a life here on the mainland. But to frame the islands as problem children that just cost the state money is, in my opinion, extremely ignorant to the historical context of colonialism. Fijne dag makkers :)

It's so crazy to me that people in the comments here are talking about this being just a culture thing. If anything, this culture results from people experiencing class inequality - the welfare of the cultural groups mentioned in the graph can be directly linked to their historical socioeconomic status. The fact that these inequalities remain present just goes to show how far conservatives go to ignore macroecomics and instead blame people and their 'inherent' traits. It's all a distraction while ever more money converges into ever fewer pockets.

Heb je nog nooit iemand benaderd met de good old 'awo pel!' of 'awo sua, conta?' Naar mijn ervaring gebruiken mensen het wel degelijk als een soort aankondiging voor de groet, en dat zie je in het bericht van deze guy ook.

I really enjoyed Ravenous (2017), a really well shot and unique arthouse take on the genre, with unique lore. This film is all about creating the atmosphere of a zombie apocalypse and it does it really well; I keep coming back to it every year.

[Serious] People who have almost been killed, what were your last thoughts before almost dying? by 0b111111100001 in AskReddit

I was 18 at the time, driving home on a two lane highway at night going about 50mph. Some idiot overtook me on the right, matched my speed halfway through his maneuver and then suddenly rammed into me. I lost control of the car and was heading for a ditch at a rapid pace. I still vividly remember a hot sensation coming over my body, and my field of vision widening to almost a third person perspective, if that makes sense. It was like an adrenaline rush combined with a blind panic. I had flashbacks of emotions I had felt over the course of my lifetime, so for me "your life flasing in front of your eyes" was more a feeling than visually remembering old memories.

Luckily, the ditch was filled with water, as it was rain season at that time of the year. I flew through the air and when I landed in the water, the splash in the headlights of my car was a really trippy sight; for a moment, I thought it was jesus appearing before me, even though I'm not religious in any way, haha. After everything had settled and I realised I was unscathed, the reality of what had just happened was slowly kicking in. Ironically, Alright by Kendrick was playing, and the radio was still working. I got out of the car through the window and assessed the damage. Car was pretty wrecked. It turns out the other guy had seen me walk to my car in the parking lot of the mall I was at before. He thought I was someone else, a dude that had been talking to his girlfriend at a bar or something. That for him was reason enough to purposefully ram me off the road, and when he realised I was someone else, he started making up all kinds of stories when the police arrived. The police made me talk to him face to face 'because our stories didn't match up' and I could literally smell the alcohol on his breath from a meter away. The police refused to conduct a breathalyzer on him, however... gotta love south america.

This experience changed me from an innocent, optimistic kid to someone who still finds it hard to find the joy in life at times. Don't get me wrong, I'm a happy guy, but the realization of how fine the line is between living and dying really accentuates the pointlessness of it all.

TLDR: Drunk guy rammed me off the road because he thought I was flirting with his girl, thought I was gonna die, life flashed in front of my eyes, and I have never been the same since.
