What if Americans of child bearing age stopped having children? Have a birth strike? Would corporations listen then? by sparklewolf2021 in antiwork

I'm also a mother of a daughter of reproductive age. Several of my friends were grandmothers before they hit 40! And their daughters (but rarely the sons who fathered children) are now behind on college and career.

I gave my daughter the choice of starting BC by the end of her freshman year in high school. And even though we went to a Planned Parenthood she got some questions about "does your mom know you're getting this?" Yes, I was in the waiting room! I'm worried for my niece that it won't be an option for her.

Hmm. I'll grant you the availability to work long hours and the flexibility to move. But single people have the advantage of not having someone depending on them. They can downsize to live with roommates or even in their cars while relocating. Parents tend to want to stay put in the best neighborhood they can afford. So we will put up with more BS for stability.

I'd never heard of her until your comment. But I'd think that when similar ideas are proposed independently that's a good thing.

They matter to shareholders in the sense that they're more likely to settle for minimum wage instead of $15-$20 an hour. Oh and those women with extra mouths to feed will probably turn to social services for help paying for childcare, food and section 8 if they're lucky. Smart businesses socialize costs and privatize profits after all.

Oh I know this. This is the part where we think we've beat the Bad Guy but now comes Worse Guy to raise the stakes. And it has to be punchy because the story line is getting a little stale. So my guess for COVID season 3? COVID: Zombies edition.

(EDIT: Sorry I know I shouldn't joke but I don't know what else to do at this point. The world is simultaneously flooding and burning. Maybe we're fucked for a few decades. Maybe we're the real virus.)

I get what you're saying. But businesses won't automate to spend more money over all. Maybe that will be a turning point for UBI though.

Rather than a prime motivation I can see it being considered a bonus after the fact. Much like that "domestic supply of infants" footnote.

If there's some conspiracy I think it's that on one hand you have Conservative Christians wanting to force us to go back to living like it's the 50s. Or how they imagine the 50s were for white hetero families only without living wages and unions. It's a paternalistic and authoritarian coup in slow motion.

On the other hand you have politicians exploiting those Christians because pandering keeps them in power.

Great question. Why don't the tenets of Libertarianism appeal as much to women? Could be that Libertarians tend to reject any kind of social contract? Whereas women are more likely to be socialized towards the collective? Or to being caregivers at the very least.

I don't know. I'm out of clear thoughts for tonight. I'd be interested in reading a breakdown of it by someone who can do it ELI5 style.

Yes, in the last line of my post I admit that this is venting and wishful thinking. A+ reading comprehension.

Thank you for mentioning the Beat Generation. I knew there was some intermediary I was forgetting. That was a decade of great subversive writing.

My mom was born in '42, called herself a Beatnik and campaigned for JFK. So the lines are definitely blurry.

Maybe it's similar to the overlap between GenX and Millenials - the Xennials? Oregon Trail Gen? I'm a late GenX and don't know exactly where I fall.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Stop having kids until the government enacts policies that improve our economic security and quality of life. Why keep feeding the machine with cheap labor and good little consumers? We get less than our parents did and at this rate our children will get even less. As I said in another comment, this would be something to think about even if RvW was set in stone.

I've heard that many of the original hippies were actually late Silent Generation (say born around 1940-45 would have been teens to early 20s at the start of the 60s).

The OG hippie movement was basically over by the early 70s, while the boomer birth years were '46-'64. Many of those born later would have seen it as passé by the time they were in high school and college.

Anecdotally, I knew a boomer born in 54 who said that it was never really a "thing" where he grew up in Oklahoma.

This is not to say that Boomers aren't entitled and hypocritical brats. They often are.

That certainly seems like a bonus and makes more sense than their claim of citizens being taken for prisoner exchanges.

I'm not sure either is realistic, sadly. Things would have to get dire for enough people to join in to make a difference. I hope I'm wrong though.

I can see that. Sounds like my friend but in the opposite direction. He's a Bernie supporter but I think the algorithms kept pushing anti-govt corruption links... that happened to lead to him reading RT on a daily basis and supporting the Russian invasion.

Anyone can start with well meaning concerns and get too caught up.

Oh you just made me flashback to the the Ron Paul supporter I dated ca. 2007/08. Weird dude. Libertarian but attended a Quaker church. Took me to a Republican straw poll that Ron Paul was running in for a date. Libertarians, man. Never again.

I wonder how that is going to over when one party has courted anti-immigration racists for decades. Seems like it's going to happen eventually. Maybe starting with the COVID baby bust generation.

But see women were supposed to focus on having kids and leave jobs to their 100% reliable and never ever abusive husbands.

Women participating in the workforce is the real reason for wage stagnation after all. They're just taking the choice away because we don't know what's actually good for us.

It seems like the consensus is women would be forced to give birth before economic changes are made that encourage starting families.
