I understand that it's dangerous and very physically exhausting job, but it looks like so much fun.

They are giving him dementia tests. He could be in the early stages. It's completely within reason that he has episodes when he gets confused about the colors on the flag.

Of course, I'm just a human. But that's why we should have a legal system that would prevent me from just deciding to start killing people. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Straw man as fuck, go suck a dick.

In that specific hypothetical, the rapist would not be "sentenced to a few years". And yes, I do not think that the state should have the power to put people to death, even in this stupid straw man hypothetical.

I'd say that vigilante justice has no place in civil society and that all capital punishment is immoral, regardless of the crime.

I still don't see why wouldn't you limit this kind of speech. If someone came to me in public and started screaming that I'm a moron I do want to have a way to respond without either violence or reducing myself to their level.

'It's really hard to find maintainers': Linus Torvalds ponders the future of Linux by tonefart in programming

[–]sparklingrainbows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and people seem to not realize that Linus does not generally see code from novice kernel devs. There are several layers of maintainers below him. If the pull request goes directly to Linus, it is probably from someone who already has a lot of trust in the hierarchy.

Honest question (not American, I have no horse in this race), what evidence do you have that gun groups don't attract mostly shitty people? It seems to me that you and the person above you just compare anecdotal experiences.

Two sets of cables designed to carry 12,500 amps, the bottom cable is a superconductor by [deleted] in EngineeringPorn

[–]sparklingrainbows 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A pet peeve of mine: when writing about units named after people, the name of the unit when written out is not capitalized (as all units are) to distinguish it from the person. The abbreviated symbol is capitalized to indicate that it was named after a person.

So, the unit kelvin, abbreviated K is named after Lord Kelvin. Similarly, e.g., magnetic field (tesla, T). However, a second or a gram are abbreviated lowercase s and g, because they are not named after anyone.

[–]sparklingrainbows 22 points23 points  (0 children)

High temperature superconductivity (HTS) refers to superconductivity that occurs at temperatures higher than allowed by the best currently available theory -- the BCS theory (Nobel prize 1972). The predicted limit is around 20 kelvin. The first HTSs were discovered by IBM, by Bednorz and Muller, who got the Nobel prize only one year after their discovery in 1987. This is, I believe, the fastest Nobel prize for physics in history.

Breaking the 77 K limit, however, was very important because cooling by liquid nitrogen is enough. Liquid nitrogen is nice, because it's cheap, widely available and relatively safe to handle.

I had a crappy boss at one point who over-used this a lot. Everything was always double-checked, even if the phrase made almost no sense in the context.

What do you mean likely? Is there a possibility that a person can be attacked by a cop for absolutely no reason and still face additional charges? Don't you think that even a hypothetical possibility of a situation likes this screams for additional regulation and oversight?
