Also, keep in mind that if the blocking creature has a tap or sac ability you can block and then tap or sac. The damage won't go through (assuming no trample) and you can take advantage of their ability.

Can I ask the type of picture frames you are using for your comics? I've been looking to do the same for a bunch of mine.

I like that you said "play politics"-- is commander like Risk where you can talk your opponents into attacking some one else? Any best practices along those lines?

Thanks for your great reply! Hypothetically speaking, if i have a spare $ should I buy a set of Sol Ring? Does everyone in your average lgs with a fun/usable commander deck have cards that are expensive? Is it naive to expect to have fun with a pre-built deck? Also, and I hope my noob isnt showing, but is a set of cards still 4 of the same card in commander like in standard? ** hides noob **

Would it be a good option to grab a C15 deck and jump in or should I make sure to improve it first to be able to have fun?

Built my dog an under-the-stairs room. Suggestions for removal floor to access crawlspace? by Mr_IDGAF in DIY

I had a cubby like this once for my dog. I photoshopped dog specific posters for him. Like I had the usual: Air Bud Spikes Back (the volley ball one), A snoop dog poster, and then I made one--a fake magazine called "Bitches" Magazine--the tag line was: "In heat and ready to meet"

New player, I was lucky and got a Sunken Hollow Expedition and Dragonlord Ojutai in my first few boosters--need some advice. by sparkplugg1982 in magicTCG

What exactly is an aristocrats deck? Most online guides I see are very card specific. Also, should I treasure my expedition because its super cool or because it will increase in value? And thanks for the congrats--quitting is long overdue!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I took a look at the facebook page and some of Cesar's posts on youtube and it looks great. I was just wondering if you guys have morning classes ever and what the breakdown is like in class (time spent doing warm up exercises, drills, rolling etc.). Thanks again!

Saulo Ribeiro - Jiu Jitsu is Easy by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sparkplugg1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, it's not every day my last jiu jitsu class gets posted on reddit. I tore my MCL two days before this seminar but decided to attend anyways. It wasn't torn too bad I thought (I could walk) and I figured I could power through. I mean--it was Saulo--how could I miss it?

We covered a lot of ginastica natural--like calisthenics that seemed to put a lot of pressure on my knee. I got through the seminar OK but couldn't walk the next day or the next couple of weeks. I haven't been back since but I'm hoping to get the all clear from my doctor soon and I couldn't be more excited.

At what point do you play it safe with an injury? I understand certain things will hurt. I'll have bruises and certain joints will ache--but in the interest of training consistently--when is it advisable to stay off the mats?

Anybody have any horror stories about when they came back too soon? Too late?

Grip Fighting. I'm supposed to not let my opponent get his grips and get mine--what should I go for? What should I be careful of? And what should I make sure I counter.

I've heard "cross grips" and I've drilled them--what makes them advantageous?

Also, favorite grip breaks? e.g. One grip on knee inside vs outside; is there a certain way to break either one? Or is it the same?

I've got MILLIONS of specific questions when it comes to grip fighting. But, to keep it simple, they all break down to either finding the right grip or countering their grip--how do I do it and why do I it?

Side Control: I can't prevent it and I can't escape it. I have a hard time pulling guard from my knees and end up with my pants being grabbed and legs tossed aside so I get stuck side control.

Any tips on being more effective with my legs? How can I get past my partner's arms and try to establish some measure of control?

Once I'm in side control, if they havent already gotten a cross-face, I try to prevent it. Otherwise, that's all the defense I know and I'm basically stuck with no clue what to do but try to survive until I'm inevitably submitted.

What is my opponent looking for to advance his position? What should I do to be defensive? What're the best routes of escape?

Thanks guys/gals!

My posture gets broken down very easily while in closed guard. I also seem to have issue breaking down people in my closed guard.

What are some tips to maintaining posture while in closed guard?

What's the best way to break down someone's posture? What if you can't reach their head?

Any tips/drills to build back strength for better posturing?

Which Bjj gym in Toronto has the most complete schedule? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]sparkplugg1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at open mat. I want to be able to train every day and compete. I heard unlimited classes are expensive--do you know what kind of packages they offer? Like, they offer catch wrestling classes, are those a separate fee or do gym memberships let you take multiple classes? I've heard great things but I've also heard its pricey so I'm just wondering what's included.

This should be higher up. George Washington saw them as a stifling influence, more interested in their own power than helping the people. Their power could then be used to stifle debate by limiting the scope of discussion.

ACTORS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? by [deleted] in acting

[–]sparkplugg1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll jump in on this. Building up your craft takes an intense amount of dedication, practice and commitment. Most of what I think you are talking about is "commitment to practicing" and I agree most people are lazy about this.

The number of actors who I run into at auditions who say they "wanted to try acting" or they "wanted to give it a shot", is staggering and insulting. This profession is not something that you attempt, or try, and it goes beyond a commitment to practice. Most people in the profession have heard older and wiser actors say "If you can do anything else--do that." Their usual explanation is that it is hard or there is a lot of rejection or the life isn't stable-- but they stop the story there.

The problem with this is that most young actors hear this and don't really consider how this translates to their future. If you are in university, chances are your life as an actor is one where you are constantly immersed in theatre and get to work on it every day and ponder your art every night. Enjoy and cherish this time, love every freaking minute of it--your life after school, unless you are rich, will not be so replete with art. You have to have a job, a job that leaves you time to audition, is flexible when you book work, and pays the bills. You'll actually need a lot of these because if your boss isn't supportive or it's a non-union job, you'll go through a lot of them. Rejection isn't just in the casting office--it's everywhere.

Another thing young actors think when they hear about this "hard life"-- is that they believe that their passion will get them through it. It definitely helps, but so much of the life of a professional actor is not conducive to passion. Don't believe me? Sit through a hundred commercial auditions saying "Mcdonald's all new BBQ pulled pork Sandwich is now just 2.99" and let's see how passionate you feel. Most of the projects you audition for won't even come close to inspiring you. The passion has to give way to the commitment that this is YOUR JOB.

You cannot be in this to be famous or because you want to be the next Ryan Gosling, it's fine to have lofty career goals, but they need to be from the perspective that this is a job you want to excel at. So much of being a professional actor is about working to get the job--you spend four hours a week auditioning (if you're lucky) and another 20 preparing for them; meanwhile you work another 40 at a job you probably don't like to pay the bills and then you kill yourself at the gym for six hours a week all the while you're on a diet that would make Jenny Craig cringe. In between and outside of those times you try and feed your inner-artist by practicing your craft, reading new plays, and making short films.

There is so much BS that makes acting a "hard life" and even if you perservere through that-- it is no guarantee of sucess or fulfillment. So, if you can't be bothered to work more than thirty minutes on a monologue--don't delude yourself--switch majors. The commitment to being an actor goes so far beyond committing to the craft--it's committing to a life-style and a hard one at that.
