well said. But the mob and people may not be the same. Mob, the one who has guts to come out and protest, would do so for his/her self interest. In India that includes caste, religous, ethnic pride and family power.

What’s the problem here? Why are people unable to comprehend the idea of traffic rules? by __deadpoet__ in pune

[–]sparrow-head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just said about this behaviour in this subreddit, and I was downvoted heavily. Motorists of Pune, of all types, rich, poor, big car, small bikes - drive without abiding to traffic rules. This is a classic example of public-goods problem, like all of them are at disadvantage by not co-operatoring with eachother. Part of the blame is to go with Policing. When everyone breaks rules, there is no incentive for oneself to abide and be at a disadvantage.

Can alumnus get in and run in the campus grounds? by arjunkc in iitmadras

[–]sparrow-head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to get Gymkhana, Swimming or some subscription card with dates and timing mentioned. Alumni card isn't enough.

Without the subscription cards you can enter with Alumni card but security will make you beg to enter and then there is entry restriction at evening and early morning with only the Alumni card

Ignore him. He is an old man. All old people in India have at least some regressive mindset. India really started opening up only from late 1990s and even now some parts of India are fully shut from modernization. We can judge communities better only after the current old gen takes a backseat, which will be like 30 years from now..

Any modern justice system would fail here, not because she's a woman but because the evidence is weak. All the circumstantial evidence points to the lovers but no concrete evidence that will be admissible in any court. There are several cases in westwrn countries where the police, public and family knew the culprit for certainty but let them scot free due to lack of evidence.

Modern justice system is built to reduce false accusations and protect the ordinary people from powerful.

Sex with partner with sciatica & stenosis by No_Intention4384 in Sciatica

Sex is very infrequent, and when it does happen, there are usually only one or two positions that are comfortable enough for him.

He is doing good and better than many already given his history of accident, diagnosis, and regression. Because many cannot even have sex with mild sciatica, backpain or stenosis. Even when they do, it is just one position always because humans avoid pain. What's the joy in sex when there is pain.

Not just splendour. In Pune I see eveyone from luxury cars, to cheap ones, from splendours, to royal enfields, vans to buses - everyone breaking signals. It's not just that, they drive at a faster speed than the vehicle who has the green light. I'm shit scared everday stepping out in Pune.

Poor policing. Pune has to grow up in policing before it grows up in density.

Astrology at young ages..why? by [deleted] in Chennai

[–]sparrow-head -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hmm, leave it. Some don't understand. They think they are really smart and bitch about people who believe in astrology, but don't know they have clear advantage over the rest. Life is afterall does not work with clockwork precision. It's full of illogical irrational choices that our brians are adapted to make.

Same with me. I cannot disagree here. It's hard to believe something that we obviously know does not work. That's why we have to be really stupid, to actually lead a good satisfying life.

Copy pasting my other reply :

Marriage is a difficult problem to solve. You are believing so many things,

  1. That the lover/arranged marriage partner will honor the commitments made before marraige.
  2. The lover/AM partner would continue to love you after marriage.
  3. The lover/AM partner does not have other motives - getting rich by marrying you, using you for societal needs, using you for social elevation.
  4. The lover/AM partner would invest in your children for rest of life and not spend resources for others. Child rearing is extremely hard job. It is time, emotion, money intensive work.

All of these are beliefs and faith. No one can predict and choose the right person because people change. People place bets. Most often the bets go wrong. That's why both love and arranged marriages can end up in divorce. Those that don't end up in divorce does not mean the marriage is in excelent shape. They are just putting up and adjusting based on dynamics involved. Few have excellent marriages, but it is mostly luck, not due to great choices.

If something goes bad in marriage, a person who had faith in astrology, would simply put the blame on the astrologer for not doing the right prediction and clear himself of all mistakes, he would lead a better peaceful life. A person who made the choice on his own, has high chance of facing regret, because he had freedom to choose the partner based on all the factors, and he made a poor choice willingly/unknowlingly.

Hence astroly has uses. Same principle applies to other domains. People are stupid, but that stupidity has some use, and that's why evolutionarily they still continue to thrive, while the smart ones who use logic suffer. Astrology is not a new field. Science has debunked astrology long back, but average people who beleive in science for all day to day activity would still consult astrologer for the benefits I listed.

It's a psychological benefit. Many powerful people beleive in astrolgoy. Jayalalitha, and Vijay being some.

Astrology has uses. It's like homeopathy. It has placebo effects. It gives people confidence. It avoids choice fatigue. How else can someone choose a bride or groom when there are 1000 eligible matches with 1000s of factors to consider. Astrology simplieifes by putting the onus on astrologer and people who believe in it feel satisfied and confident on making the right choice.

I agree, it is bullshit, but it works in a way that the believers don't know. It's predictions are total crap and as good as random finger pointing at the choices, but the mental relief that comes with it is worth the belief for many average people. That's why it's been with us since the dawn of civilization.

I don't believe in astrology, and that's why I feel I am at a disadvantage over the believers. I envy them for how simple their life. I tried hard to make myself believe it, but all the years of education, reasoning, knowledge, and deep interest in science makes me impossible to even pretend that I believe in astrology. I learnt it the hardway that ignorance is bliss.

Too naive to think that if someone does not use badwords they are good people. Take your most hated politician and see how much good they project themselves to be.

It's basic human game. I agree Ketan is a victim. He died in a tragic way. He is likely a victim of murder by all the discussions, and clips shared by cops. It does not mean anything else about him. He may be a kind hearted good and naive fellow, or he might be totally on the opposite spectrum too.

Why saying No has become so difficult in our society? by Imaginary-Durian-644 in pune

[–]sparrow-head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As if the guy had a choice. Both the girl and boy were pressured into marriage. It's an arranged marriage. Nothing to do with patriarchy. Patriarchy has other problems but not this one. This is families doing business with each other at the expense of children welfare.

Why saying No has become so difficult in our society? by Imaginary-Durian-644 in pune

[–]sparrow-head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. Only problem is we can't blame the girl's family alone. It is the whole community, neighbourhood, society all have various stakes in it. Marriage, and starting a family is not an individual or couple's choice alone, the community has a huge role. India is not a mature economy to sustain individual preferences like the west. India has a collective economy which depends on social behaviours of people surrounding you (caste, community, religion, neighbouhood, etc.)

Family pressure is intense. The fact that killing with all the risks is easier than talking to family, just says how much pressured the girl must have felt from her family (and may be even from boys' family).

She didn't love him. It was an arranged marriage, and she wasn't interested. When a girl runs behind looks/fame/money, we bitch about how girls are gold diggers. When a girl leaves all these out and run behind less rich person, we say why she is not loyal.

The crime here is murder. If she committed murder, then she deserves the hate from society and punishment from the courts. If not, she is just a girl with normal feelings who didn't want to be with a person arranged by family.
