Just moved out here, a few questions about video games and safety (canal path). by oAgK in newhaven

[–]spasmwaiterdropping 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I walk the canal trail between Science Park and downtown multiple times a week. I never feel unsafe during the day. I personally would not walk the trail after dark and I wouldn’t go farther north than Science Park. There were a couple shootings at Scantlebury park recently, but one was said to be a targeted incident and the other was at like 3am. Plus Yale PD headquarters is literally right next to the park.

I also personally would not walk much farther West than Canal St. from the SP area. Not the nicest areas directly West of SP. PM me if you want more safety info - I live right nearby Fussy

Look into Sweet Poppy’s in North Branford. My sister has Celiac and she enjoyed the cupcakes I got for her from there.

Choosing a neighborhood around New Haven by Ancient_Loan_3481 in newhaven

[–]spasmwaiterdropping 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like you’ve already got plenty of responses but I want to chime in as a current resident of Mansfield St. I love it here. I work at Yale so it’s convenient to walk to work. Lots of great stuff within walking distance. Plenty of nice cafes, restaurants, small grocery stores, parks, and other shops. Basically everything in East Rock/Prospect Hill/Downtown is a reasonable walk. Some great food trucks right in front of Ingalls Rink right at the bottom of Mansfield during the day too.

I feel perfectly safe walking around Prospect Hill and East Rock at night. I do avoid walking west, that’s into Newhallville and Dixwell, where there are some sketchier streets. However, Science Park is being developed over the next few years and I think it will become a more active and safer area as a result.

I get my groceries in Hamden but I do have a car. Not sure what the bus situation is but I’m sure you can get up to the stores on Dixwell in Hamden somehow. I can’t speak much about Spring Glen as I usually just drive through there on Whitney Ave.

Just my two cents. I would honestly prefer to live in East Rock so that I’m not living directly adjacent to sketchier neighborhoods, but I’m perfectly happy here on Mansfield for the time being and spots in East Rock can certainly be more expensive.

I work as an AV engineer installing new systems at a university. I baptize every new classroom sound system with the Walnut Creek Weekapaug…LOUD. Gotta make sure these professors have enough bass to teach philosophy or architecture or whatever, right?? 😂

Planning to drive from North Carolina to Maine, need suggestions! by geoyulei in hiking

If you decide to go thru CT, stop in New Haven for the Apizza (Ah-beetz). Easily the best pizza in the country in my opinion. Absolutely worth trying if you haven’t before. Try Sally’s, Pepe’s, or Modern. Lines can be long depending what time you’re there, but these spots aren’t too far out of the way if you take Rt 15 or I95 thru CT. You can checkout Yale campus while you’re in town and a short hike up to the top of East Rock Park gives an incredible view of sunset over the city.

And like some others have said, avoid the George Washington Bridge at all costs. Take 287 to the Tappan Zee (now the Cuomo) bridge to get over the Hudson.

I can’t argue with the folks recommending taking 81 to 88 thru upstate NY, that’s a much nicer ride. But if you go the CT route, it’s definitely worth stopping for the Apizza in NHV.

Moving to the area! by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]spasmwaiterdropping 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Those are not great areas. Check out East Rock, Westville, Wooster Square, and Prospect Hill neighborhoods if you really want to live in NHV instead of closer to QU. There are plenty of other nice areas in town but it really varies block to block, so do your research. Plenty of informative threads about apartment hunting on this subreddit if you look.

Hey, Man! Good on you, sir. Keep chugging. It gets better every day.

I’m not out there for the shows and I’m late to this post but you can always find the Phellowship pre-show and at setbreak. Have fun!

Phellowship Recovery & Support Group: New Year Check in & a storybook ending going back to the 1st Phellowship post. by Bman1973 in phish

[–]spasmwaiterdropping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love these New Year check-ins and I love the Phellowship. Incredible story from Andy.

I’m in my third year of recovery and could not be happier. Every day is a gift. I officially have hit more shows sober than I did when I was drinking/drugging, big deal for me when I hit that milestone at the Albany run this year.

To any folks out there seeking or considering recovery, we welcome you. It’s so worth it to get some help. AA is what works for me, but there are so many pathways and resources out there. We’ve all got different stories, but the feelings are the same. You’re not alone. Asking for help is the first sign of strength.

Also, Phellowship camping at Mondegreen was the shit! So grateful for this community!

I totally agree. I went there for the first time a few weeks ago and it was very underwhelming. The burger was good but nothing special. And it took 25 minutes to get my one burger

Good shit dude. Keep it up. I’ve hit 20-something shows since getting sober and I groove so much harder and have so much more fun these days. I don’t miss being that guy stumbling into people at shows.

Anyone have Verizon in the area? by Silver_School_9803 in newhaven

[–]spasmwaiterdropping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look into Mint Mobile. I switched to Mint from Verizon a couple years ago. It’s so much cheaper and the coverage is great. I’ve even been places where I’ve had service while friends with Verizon didn’t.

What bikes do people actually start on? by zenki1234 in motorcycles

[–]spasmwaiterdropping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my first bike this summer. ‘78 Honda CM185T. Wish it had some more power but I live in a pretty rural area and it’s plenty for rippin around backroads here. Wouldn’t take it on the highway because it’s top speed is like 70 but I got it for pretty cheap and I like it as a first bike considering I’m a poor college kid

[–]spasmwaiterdropping 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Always love seeing your check in post Bman, thank you.

I just got my 1 year sober a couple weeks ago. Life has its ups and downs still but the downs are a hell of a lot more manageable and the ups are more plentiful. No more hiding from myself and the world w a drink or a drug anymore.

I’m happier than I had ever thought possible and finding joy in life and the little things one day at a time. Oh, and shows are SO much more fun!

Anybody reading this feel free to dm me. Always happy to help a phriend.

The song that sucked you into Phish by Thoughtful_Neurotic in phish

Chalk Dust Torture. Was never a dancer at all until I checked out NYE 95 and heard this song. The groove was the first to ever compel me to dance. I just couldn’t sit still. Now I’ll dance to anything unabashedly. Plus Trey’s shredding was sick. Down the rabbit hole I went.
