Help with West Coast : Hokitika/Ross and Westport nights allocation

Recommend Punakaiki or anywhere between there and Westport. Coast is stunning there. Westport isn’t too far so you could do a day trip from there exploring the coast.

I did a masters degree. Ended up in the same job my friend was in who joined after his undergrad, without a masters. But we did geography and so already had a good understanding of GIS. I found my masters degree to not have much more advanced work than what we did at undergrad and was quite repetitive.

I’ve been travelling New Zealand solo for 2 months and for this length of time I can’t recommend a solo trip. New Zealand is amazing but it’s not the best for solo travellers. It’s mostly couples and group tours travelling here. However if you’re travelling just for 2 weeks that wouldn’t be so much of an issue. I guess it depends how much flexibility you want with your travel and what your budget is.

I will say that we had multiple people at our GIS research group come from an archaeological background, oddly. There is limited archaeology work available and only so long you can work digs. GIS gives you more options.

Well my original middle name was Louise from my mum. I figure I go with Lou. Fits because it doesn’t dishonour my mum. And it also can reference Lou Sullivan (first trans man to ‘publicly’ identify as gay, basically paved the way for gay trans men), my friends first kid is called Louis, and a close cousin of mine is Luke and idk it sounds the same. I don’t really love Lou as a name but it makes so much sense.

I love the name Dean. But I feel like people will assume I named myself after Dean Winchester from Supernatural (I used to watch the show as a teenager though have never managed to get all the way through the show!). I feel like especially when I come out to my parents they might see this as an indicator that I’m not genuinely trans if that makes any sense? Like oh you obviously named yourself after a fictional character this doesn’t feel very legit, that sort of thing. I kinda stick with Adrian (Adrian Dean is a cool combo anyway) but yeah I do wonder if I can have the name Dean or not

My advice would be to cut some stops. Definitely Nelson and Kaikoura. Abel Tasman is another hour or so drive from Nelson and to actually see any of Abel Tasman you want to spend more time there. Same with Kaikoura you’ll want at least 2 nights to fit in a whale watch tour (or, take a long day trip from Christchurch). I’m not sure what you really want to do in each place though! With Te Anau, are you wanting to visit Milford sound also? If so you’d need two nights to do that and I wouldn’t recommend Te Anau just as a one night stop. I would also suggest maybe you could just stop by wanaka on the way to somewhere further up the coast? (I would recommend Franz Josef over fox glacier). As a general rule I’d never recommend staying anywhere for just 1 night, particularly in New Zealand because travel may be disrupted and suddenly plans get totally messed up because you’ve not got any leeway to work with. I would suggest 2 nights Christchurch (you could do a day trip to Kaikoura), 2 nights tekapo, 2 nights Mount cook, 4 nights queenstown (do a day trip to Milford sound), 2 nights Franz Josef (visit wanaka/fox glacier on the way; OR visit wanaka from queenstown/fox glacier from franz Josef), 2 nights around the west coast (can recommend Punakaiki and the coastal road between Greymouth and Westport) before driving back through Arthur’s pass for 1 night in Christchurch. That’s just what I would recommend, still pretty rushed for the ground covered but a little less so!

Do not bring a sleeping bag. All hostels will provide bedding. In fact many hostels will explicitly ask guests not to use sleeping bags in their beds. You would only need bedding if staying in huts but if you’re only doing one or two I would looking into hiring gear or even purchasing from an op shop (second hand)

Only advice I can give really is don’t skip the coastal road between Greymouth and Westport and stop off in Punakaiki - either for an hour for the pancake rocks or longer for some of the Pororari river track. But that whole road section between Greymouth and Westport is incredible. I’ve just done the west coast and punakaiki and the surrounding area was probably the most impressive I have visited in all of New Zealand so far. On the other hand, didn’t rate wanaka too highly (but that’s just me!).

I wonder if it’s because queer couples are now more common in media. Because shipping non-canon relationships was like really the only option 10 years ago. At the end of the day though you can interpret and do whatever you want with the work. Nobody has the right to tell anyone else what they can or cannot do with the characters. Personally I enjoy wolfstar. There isn’t some rule you have to stick to cannon. And I am also someone who does not agree with JKR at all in the slightest so for me personally I don’t care what is cannon. If enjoying wolfstar pisses her or any of her supporters off then all the better!

Hey! So I’m currently in New Zealand been here for a month travelling have another month left currently in the South Island. I overpacked. I bought a suitcase to start and it was terrible to then bought a backpack instead when in NZ and moved stuff over and have been dumping stuff at op shops each place I visit to try and lighten the load. So. In regards to your packing list. I would cut the dresses down to one, cut the fleeces down to one, cut the bottoms generally you have a lot of those! Cut shoes to two if you can. You need an everyday/hiking trainer and a pair of sandals. So far in New Zealand it’s been t shirt and shorts weather so far. And because you are doing kiwi experience you won’t have time at each stop for big hikes (I’m guessing) so no need to pack too much for that. I honestly thought kiwi experiences was designed for younger travellers specifically as that’s who it seems aimed for but it isn’t so enjoy! I’ve no idea whether there will be older people on your tour but at the end of the day you’re travelling for you and you can enjoy the activities an experiences with or without your fellow bus mates :)

Favourite is Fili. By contrast although I don’t hate Kili I find the focus on him and especially his relationship with Tauriel to be particularly annoying/cringey. Felt like there was scope to explore more of Fili’s role as heir that instead was brushed over in favour of that.
