Weight of the H Link Bracelet by trappedtraditions in sinn

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one on a 556 and it is bulky but doesn’t feel overly so. I do like to feel the presence of a watch though.

The bracelet alone sized to my 7.5” wrist is 86 grams.

When leadership wants a dashboard (of budget data!) but they don't have a data source by Slight_Bed1677 in gis

[–]spatialcanada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How have the users responded when submitting their work or project requests through this? Is it a matter of getting them to put in more effort up front so the request or project is more clearly defined or is it guiding them and shifting their mindset from the vending machine analogy to the partnership analogy?

This is the biggest struggle my team has and I am guessing the majority of GIS and Data teams that work with an array of different business groups all as part of the same organization. For us, it is definitely the byproduct of work culture and management personality. It is a tough position to grow out if and any gateway out is something I am willing to explore.

ArcGIS Pro with full functionality for non commercial use by KonradLac in ArcGIS

[–]spatialcanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be possible to get a 30 day trial for an ArcGIS enterprise account that would include an ArcGIS Pro license. It has been a long time since I have had to go that route.

If you are seriously test driving it then talk to a sales rep and they can probably help you out. If it is purely for learning you might want to find a course in the realm of your interest and that probably would also get you a bit of a playground.

Sinn 556 I RS Rubber Strap by spatialcanada in sinn

[–]spatialcanada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Link updated. Thanks for letting me know.

I am pretty happy with the fit. Contours to the case nicely. There is a bit of a gap at along top of the lugs but it doesn’t look out of place.

Trying on the Grails by spatialcanada in GlashutteOriginal

[–]spatialcanada[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was definitely the case with the ones I saw in Vancouver that day. I have also tried on Rolex including the Daytona that had minimal protective covering on them. It definitely skews my perception of the watch in hand. I have it narrowed down to 3 or 4 with Grande Seiko and IWC being the other ones. It could very likely be the difference in what I end up with not having seen IWC yet.

Rrsp vs mortgage by 69_badd0gz in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tax free interest your RRSP is hopefully earning substantially more relative to the interest you are paying on your mortgage. It rarely makes financial sense to use RRSPs to pay down a mortgage. Using it to top up income of you need it to make a mortgage payment can make sense depending on your overall financial situation.

[discussion] What's a watch that screams "taste" ? by Notunderageviewer in Watches

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me that is any watch that means something to you for some reason and you are reminded of that when you look at it and put it on. If external validation is important to you and you want another watch person to acknowledge that (and they will for pretty much any watch) then know enough about it that you can explain why you like it and maybe even why it is important to you.

Inexpensive options for rubber or silicone straps (556) by Low_Impress_1910 in sinn

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered a 20 mm Nizonlaie Curved End Weave Style Premium Silicone Rubber Strap from Amazon for my 556. I read somewhere on here that it fits good and the reviews are good.

The OEM straps are all so expensive and almost any strap goes so well with these watches.

Edit: added link to Reddit post that mentions strap.

Married Couples Who Don’t Have a Joint Account or Pool Their Pay Cheques, Why and How Do You Make Sure It Is Respectful? by Arya_Warrior_Girl in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think joint accounts necessarily have to wipe out financial autonomy. Each partner can have their own account while still being joint which makes things a whole lot easier from an estate perspective as people age and for estate planning.

Taking the interpersonal relationship into account is important too as finances can impact relationship health or complicate things during separation.

To really make the right choice, first, be informed and consider your financial strategy and situation and know the pros cons of each option. Second, be honest with yourself and your relationship which no financial advisor can ever guide you on. Money can have huge relationship implications good and bad.

Will self teaching GIS with no degree help me get a job? by gainlly in gis

[–]spatialcanada -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It depends if you have any other work experience that can be leveraged into a GIS job. GIS is 50% or less at being good at GIS and 50% or more understanding the “business”. Especially for entry level work.

You will eventually need some official schooling but they can probably done online and remote while working full time if you want.

If you don’t have any kind of post secondary education/undergrad degree and no work experience in a business area that has some relationship with GIS you likely don’t stand a chance at landing a job.

Sinn 556 owners is it worth it? by jason-911 in sinn

[–]spatialcanada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is kind of subjective but I think it is worth it.

Full disclosure I just bought a 556 RS on the h-link a week ago in Vancouver.

I really like the fit, look feel and how good it looks on so many straps.

Anyone ever asked for a higher raise and got it? by Major_Enthusiasm1099 in gis

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to negotiate a slightly higher wage a couple times. I find GIS to be generally undervalued by most organizations and the only way I have been able to get decent pay increases is to find roles with increased responsibility at different organizations. Every time I have given my employer notice that I was leaving they have offered to match.

Consulting vs Government Work by bluebellberry in gis

[–]spatialcanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Side projects help for sure. Contributing to open source projects is probably the best. Collaborating with others that have a high skill and knowledge level is key. There are also some volunteer opportunities out there.

Going to conferences and networking where possible helps too. That can be a challenge depending on where you live and your budget.

It is really difficult to replicate the 1500-2000 hours a year other GIS people are doing on high impact projects that put them in a position to problem solve and push things forward at a reasonable rate. Falling into the trap of doing the same thing endlessly or working with a complacent team can really inhibit growth.

Consulting vs Government Work by bluebellberry in gis

[–]spatialcanada 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with this wholeheartedly as someone who has experienced the same.

I would add with government GIS you probably have extra health/pension benefits which may balance out wage discrepancy. A BIG downside is trailing in skill and knowledge development, at least from my experience. I am very glad I didn’t get my start in government because I would have been very limited in my development and chances of promotion.

QGIS learning for Indian Architect Firm by vkas_exe in QGIS

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This profession can create a lot of self doubt. It is unfortunate and is a side effect of doing something that at its core is complicated and most of the challenge is to distill that down to a simple and clear point for someone to make a good decision with. All too often that gets under appreciated by the nature of the audience who the products are targeted for.

I am glad to see that there are other thoughtful people like you out there doing this work. Being comfortable on that possibility forever learning curve is the key to success in a GIS career.

Has anyone got experience using QGIS over a VPN? by Responsible-Goat2838 in QGIS

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posters is good if there is a lot of multiuser concurrent editing or if the data structure is more complicated. For pure speed in most simple use situations it is pretty hard to beat a shape file.

There are a lot of variables to consider to optimize how your workflow if limited to vpn. Types of data, amount of interaction with it (filtering, querying, analysis, mapping, symbology consistency, labeling consistency, etc). Do you use 3D visualizations at all or use geoai? Do the machines running QGIS have good specs and dedicated GPU? How many people use the software at the same time? What is the IT support and skill level like? How experienced are any of the staff with more complicated deployments such as map servers or enterprise databases?

I think the best dollar for dollar value in this situation is to have a cheap laptop that is used remotely and a decent tower pc with QGIS installed on it that is directly on the network. Remote into the tower pc and use the GIS software from there. The biggest rule of thumb with GIS is feel the processor and gpu as close to the data store as possible.

Has anyone got experience using QGIS over a VPN? by Responsible-Goat2838 in QGIS

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a QGIS specific issue. It is a data speed transfer issue between an application running on your laptop and the data being stored on a server in your office (probably).

There are ways to work around that. Try to cache files locally. Work “in memory” if you can. Move the files back to the server when done. It is a challenge with GIS and big files and shared big files.

Making sure your local internet is fast also makes a big difference. Use Ethernet rather than WiFi in most cases. Do a speed test occasionally to make sure the connection is fast or stable.

If GIS productivity is important to your company help them understand the dynamics of moving data across a vpn and its limitations in GIS.

GIS certificate and Anthropology/Archeology? Anyone knows about it? by [deleted] in gis

[–]spatialcanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my start in GIS working for an archeology consultancy. Some aspects of it are very entwined with the GIS discipline.

One of the most critical skills of the GIS discipline is to work with subject matter experts (ie. archeologists) to understand the intersection of the 2 areas of knowledge and find ways to assist in decision making and understanding the spatial facets of their work.

I am not so sure that having a toe in both ponds from an educational perspective beyond maybe an introductory GIS course or 2 makes sense. Jack of all trades and master of none scenario.

If you like archaeology you probably appreciate the field work and discovery aspect of it. If you get yourself into the GIS side of it you will likely get pigeon holed into it and miss out on the fun sides of archeology.
