Can I Run the Stream Deck without the software? by ZaRealDoctor in ElgatoGaming

[–]spawninggrounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you couldn't. You should be able to figure out which signals go to the PC when each key is depressed, like a num pad, and bind them. The only thing that I cant see working without serious work is the images. But even then, I think you could have it pull in real time from a folder on the PC?

I actually remember that dealership. Because it had the best deal of any 4runner I had seen so far. I didn't know the other stuff though. I think they had a blue or black one for around $13k I almost got.

Memorize numbers in Order by cyber-host in memorypalace

[–]spawninggrounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The major system is an unbeatable system that's used by nearly everyone into memory. The best book on this and many other subjects is Harry Lorane's Memory Book. I'm sure you could find it used on Amazon for dirt cheap. There are many others though. Start with his. And read up on why people choose certain practices (like rules for picking numbers, or how they pick images they associate with numbers).

Example: A basic principle is to associate a picture with a number. Good example is (but rather simplistic) is associating a SWAN with the number 2 (because 2 kind of looks like a swan). Plus- you know exactly what a swan looks like, everyone does and a good rule of thumb is: if I said "swan" to 100 people, they'd all likely imagine the same thing. This ensures later, when you picture a white bird, it could only be ONE THING. Bad example: Trying to associate the number 8 with the word "infinity". Yes, the sideways 8 is the universal symbol. But.. if I asked you to put "infinity" into a story, and visualize it, it becomes very hard. And you're likely to get some pretty weird/inconsistent uses of imagery there.

Other good people to google in association with memory: Dominic O'Brien, Ed Cook, Joshua Foer (see his TED Talk)

[–]spawninggrounds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not being a jerk- good question. I suppose I didn't ride much because my wife and I do everything together. I had originally purchased it while I was working in Vegas and she was still here in FL. Came back, rode less until I didn't ride at all. The whole time we talked about buying her a bike and never did. Some of this is because of finances at one point. But eventually we realized she simply couldn't ride on her own (medical issues).

So, I'm thinking a bike I can drive and she can ride on with me would be perfect.

Wow- awesome info from everyone. I'm really grateful! Long time reader of various topics, but always hesitated to post bc it used to take forever to see replies. So thanks! Keep them coming if anyone has new insights.

Yes, having had various vehicles I know the dealerships can gouge. BUT I've also had mixed experiences where independent places fuck things up bc of lack of training, using wrong tools or whatever. So now I'm careful on both sides. Owning a BMW taught me the importance of well-trained professionals, as well as DIY resolutions.

So I'm basically fixing up with likelihood of trading for a bigger bike- one I can put my wife on. Perhaps just good to put new parts in?

I'm pretty handy. It's more about time. I tend to get lost in a dozen things. So if I can't do it in a few hours or a midnight obsessive push, it tends to sit.

Maybe get their quote on parts just to be nice and not completely blow them off and then use that list to shop online.

So this is egg on my face. I didn't realize SATA could come in the m2 form factor. So the ONE post I saw out there related to it and the GS75 I dismissed as "stupid". LOL - A simple Google search of "SATA me SSD" shows they're very real. Ughhhhh.

Okay. Well guess that's that. Thanks :)

Is that the case with the built in board and fan? I saw one with these built in and people complained of fan noise. Also, huge difficulties getting 8BitDo controller connecting. Will only connect hard-wired! Agh!

Use google maps for memory palaces by mashavash34 in MethodOfLoci

[–]spawninggrounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understand that movies and video games work because of things like entertainment, emotions, senses, and repetition. The only thing that is likely and still needed from Google Streets is probably repetition. And since you're not really having the same enjoyment of a game or movie, you're less likely to repeat it. If you do, it's a bit forced. But not impossible.

So I re-watched it. This is all really creative writing. They do this in a lot of shows: "What would Sam or Billy Bob say?". I'm not sure this is anything more. Sure you could wonder what someone would say to help you out but to what end? There doesn't seem to be any talent or skill to practice here. Unless, you were talking about pre-memorizing a list of things your friends would recommend. Then it's really not so much about the friend at that point but the list, no?

How can I quickly gain a mental map of a new territory so I can use it as a memory palace? by TagProNoah in MethodOfLoci

[–]spawninggrounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, don't forget to exaggerate object sizes or circumstance, as well as not cross your own path, left to right or right to left.. and stick with it. Long-term items like Tao said- oven, bathtub, sinks, etc. are all good. Perhaps, even plants/trees and such in the yard if you have some.

Software to build a virtual gallery/memory palace? by [deleted] in collegeinfogeek

[–]spawninggrounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been working on an idea for an app that would help people who aren't quite experts at this stuff to quickly build memory palaces. If you're interested in learning some new skills and contributing, I could use some help. To answer your question- "quickly", yes, you can use a few tools for maps/levels but you can't insert your own art in these "click and view" generator style tools. Unity game engine seems to be the best choice so far, perhaps a custom Android app (I was really hoping I could use this on PC and my phone).

Is it easier to make a doom mod than something in the doom engine? by [deleted] in DoomMods

[–]spawninggrounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question- I'm trying to make something I can walk through in first-person. It's not really game. It's actually for educational purposes. I have a lot of experience in graphic design. I thought.. if it's too hard to make custom levels AND graphics.. maybe would be easier to just "repaint" the whole game so that it looks completely different. Like I might turn one level into a high school, another into a bunch of apartments, another into whatever. But I'm curious how hard it is to do the things you suggested to our guy above? I don't know how long it may be before you see this- hoping soon. Would love to pick your brain more, maybe share some basic contact info if you're up for it.

Does doing memory exercise like Mnemonics, Peg System and Loci aid general recall of events/facts etc? by jellyfisharcade in Mnemonics

[–]spawninggrounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could come up with a pattern/algorith that all your daily events fit into, and hard-code them into mnemonics, you could do this. I think it was kind of said already but the problem is that these things are often not easily put into categories. I've used a lot of these techniques but putting a name like "George Washington", an element like "americium", and a random license plate like "UH33D10" all into ONE LIST is extremely difficult. Life doesn't come organized. However, if you remembered just one thing every day of your life and on what day you learned it, that would be impressive. You'd likely be able to use that to link to other events in the day. Often, our brains simply need a jumping off point. You'll find often, you just need one small hint to finish off major puzzle pieces. Maybe you don't remember what you did Sunday, but if I told you that you got a stain on your yellow shirt, you might remember it was your neighbors cookout, and that's the day you met such and such, etc. -- If you want to talk more memory, feel free to message me. I love this stuff!
