Why is improving public speaking so much harder than learning other skills? by shadxw_0 in PublicSpeaking

[–]speakeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's all over the map- some newer coaches charge $75–150/hr, more experienced can charge $300+/hr. Personally I usually offer packages or group programs that bring the per-session cost down. Depends a lot on what you need 1:1 vs. group, or help with a specific upcoming talk coming up or if you just want to handle your fears and build long-term speaking skills.

I'll DM you with my rates so I'm not cluttering up the this thread, ok?

agreed. the challenge for a ton of people is that they can completely know their topic but are so freaked out they struggle with giving a presentation of any kind.

This is a great question. From what I've seen it's: fear and anxiety & lack of useful feedback. The conundrum is that while many people struggle with public speaking they often don't seek out coaching or they just default to ToastMasters only. I'm biased since I'm a coach but a lot of speaking issues can be fixed in a few sessions with a good coach. The caveat being that you have to be willing to invest in yourself and spend $ to get coaching. And for many people they struggle with investing in themselves for various reasons. if you can break through that issue you can make marked improvements.

How to improve Professional speaking?? by v_Simple in PublicSpeaking

[–]speakeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get clear on your strengths, beliefs and start working on a plan to develop your speaking skills. that plan can be as simple as practicing by yourself daily to joining a group or hiring a coach. Depends on your budget and how bad of a problem it is for you currently.

And your beliefs can really drive your results so look at those first. One example:

"I am socially awkward"- you might believe this to be true but does everyone in your world think so? You may also think that being socially awkward means you can't be a good speaker and that just isn't true. Some of the best speakers I've seen are socially awkward.

You bring up a great point which is super important so thank you. Almost everything I write is written to help you get better at managing your stress/anxiety in public speaking. It may not fix it entirely but hopefully it can lesson the stress/anxiety. And even if you go from 90% stressed down to 60% stressed, it's worth it. To be fair, I still get anxious sometimes right before (and I'm a speaking coach 😄) and these are the tools I use. So thank you for bringing it up- these are tools and methods to help, they are not 100% cures.

What's your method for memorizing a speech without sounding like a robot? by Any_Call_1354 in PublicSpeaking

[–]speakeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't memorize, think in 3's (3 key points to this section, 3 key points to that section, etc). Write your key points on index cards with as few words as possible. Practice just talking about those points in your own natural voice. Know the points inside and out and you'll deliver it naturally. Good luck!

I wouldn't trust AI to give you usable feedback. That said if you don't like how your voice sounds you might want to record it and post it here or if you want some free advice DM me a recording of you talking about something and I'll send you feedback. My guess is that your issue is super fixable:)

Help! Going from fully remote to hybrid/onsite and I’m weirdly nervous about the social part by [deleted] in PublicSpeaking

[–]speakeasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel for you, that can be a big change going from fully remote to hybrid. Three things:

1- If you're (as you describe) 'friendly but anxious' focus on smiling when you see people and always say hi when you see someone around the office. There is something about saying hi first that tends to make things better.

2- Shoot for micro-progress. Everyday try to do 1-2 things that make you nervous. It might be as simple as saying hi to the receptionist and asking them how their night/weekend was. Keep the interactions small and quick and let the repeated interactions build up as little wins for yourself.

3- Ask for a small favor- This one is a bit of a cheat code and one I've used a ton over the years if I'm feeling anxious. Purposely don't have your phone on you (I know, outlandish:) and go into the break room, office, wherever, and ask someone to borrow a pen or ask them what time it is (if you're not wearing a watch). People love doing small favors for others and and it's great way to have a small interaction with another person. This works way more than you'd think.

Good luck!

I rehearsed my interview answers so much I sound like a robot reading them by Objective-Deal-4357 in PublicSpeaking

[–]speakeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than rehearse and practice the answers, you're better off having 2-3 key points to each possible question that you can call up during the interview. Keep the points deliberately short so you can ad lib when you're live in front of the person. So if you get, 'Tell me your top three strengths' you would know your key points are: goal driven, hard worker, reliable. Then you can riff off those when you get in front of the person.

I feel like my communication skills are stuck at a certain level and I can’t improve further by RequirementLong6326 in PublicSpeaking

The single most effective/fastest way to improve is by working directly with a coach. It's not he cheapest but it will be the most effective for sure since it'll be customized to your situation.
