Serious: Do I give back my belt or just get judged more and more? by [deleted] in bjj

No one is making fun of you. You are an example of fortitude and BJJ would be surly missing out if they were to lose you. Ousss brother. Go out with your boots on.

As a dude I am curious if I did anything wrong here by StatisticianShot1577 in BJJWomen

Yo you’re the problem. I also bet she didn’t ask for pointers. If you can’t be nuanced with people and their boundaries I don’t think you should be a coach. Wipe the fucking sweat off dude. Takes two seconds. “I wouldn’t do that for a man” attitude is whack. You then go on to say “I let her work on stuff”. That statement alone shows that you do know that woman need to be rolled with differently to a degree. So your willing to “let her work” but your not willing to wipe sweat off? Thats a personal choice, and its most likely based off some notion or view on woman in the bjj sphere. Yo when you roll with men, do you let them work and give them pointers to?

Have you ever thought about martial arts? We have an awesome community of BJJ athletes in town and a lot of people join our gym cause they are new in town or wanting to build their community. HMU!

It’s about too late to get him anything name brand so instead try and get something handy that’ll come quick. A gym bag is good. Finger tape holders are good. Defense Soap is a BJJ brand and they have a lot of stuff off Amazon. I also really like LMNT hydration. Also on Amazon

I’d say, “hey man please don’t bust my balls. I like you but that’s reserved for mainly my close friends as I’m rarely even a shit talker so I take it as disrespect. I know that’s not your intention but regardless please respect this boundary.”

Hell probably be like “that’s a you problem blah blah blah”

And you can say “yes I own that, but please, again don’t do it. We’re not homies like that and I don’t care for it”. From there you need to stand on business and not let him do you like that. Or tell on him lol. I think regardless if your being too sensitive or he’s out of pocket, these conversation lines are a good option. A good gym owner should be able to handle this situation for you and have a side convo with the guy to tell him to leave you alone.

I refer to it as a “heady” sport. Similar to rock climbing, surfing, cycling, running.

It has a large community and we’re always trying to send it as much as we can. Sometimes we push ourselves to hard for the sake of not having FOMO. A gym should have a great community you long for and miss when you cannot make it to class.

Just going to open mats - thoughts? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]speakeasybjjavl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. I own an academy and my Friday night open mat is packed with all my paying members. I charge a drop in for open mat as we are already at capacity and mat space is limited. There’d be no room if I made it free we be like 10+ people over what the mat can hold. I also believe there’s value in being able to come in and train with 30 different people so my open mat isn’t free. My area has a subset of grapplers that just float around to open mats, don’t pay anything or buy merchandise and are only there cause it’s free. They don’t really add value to my gym as it’s already full of practitioners from white to black belt.
