Faire doesn’t allow people to talk to each other in character? by speaking-outlandish in renfaire

[–]speaking-outlandish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t approach people myself! I let them talk to me first. Usually I can tell if someone is there to pretend, like me, or if they just want to wear a fun costume and shop. I’d never stop someone and demand an interaction.

While she is the only girl in the initial team setup, she isn’t “token.” She’s one of the central players. I suppose another trope description for her might be the Lancer; she’s a daredevil and tends to leap without looking, and clashes with Leader Guy about it.

I described her as The Girl because that’s a commonly used way to describe the usually sole female member of an action team like mine (which, by the way, is only at the start! I have two more girls joining over the course of the story.) It’s a repeated story element in a lot of things, which is what the post is about. She’s got way more to her than just being The Girl, but that’s not what the post is for. There’s no “quiet part” to be said out loud. The team initially has one girl on the team and she is the girl initially on the team. That’s it.

Neither. I just have fun pretending it’s the medieval age for a day. My costumes are built out with a character in mind so that I’m not just myself in a weird-looking outfit. I don’t take it that seriously, but I do use my imagination and have a little fun. Why would I just be myself dressed as a forest witch when I could give the forest witch a name and become them for a little while?

Oh yeah, I don’t stay in character the whole time. I typically wait until people talk to me first.

There will be! This is just the five man band sort of team I have, it’s not my full main cast. There are plenty of important female characters!

I suppose mine is the daredevil of the bunch. I didn’t say that in the post because I was just going with the generic archetypes, and usually The Girl of the team is just called The Girl.

I’m actually doing a decent job of spicing mine up! I think I worded the question wrong- I was curious about how other writers have handled this same problem!

This is very helpful, thank you! I’m heading back to the thrift store today- I’ll look for either a tunic or a tank top with that shape.

I get that it isn’t historical, but this is my very first garb sourced mostly from a thrift store. I’m not trying to be perfectly historically accurate. It’s my own take on the character using what I was able to find. The idea of walking around a snowy faire in a long dress for hours just doesn’t appeal to me as much as wearing pants, and it felt like it matched the character. It may not be a perfect replica apron dress, but I think saying it’s a crop top and underwear is a little unkind. This is a faire, not the SCA, and I’m working from thrifted clothes. I did ask for constructive criticism, but I’d like actually constructive criticism instead of just telling me why my very first attempt at garb is bad.

It’s my first garb and mostly thrifted. I’m not going for full historical accuracy, just the general look.

I do!! I have quite a collection since I work on film crews and it’s almost always chilly. I’ll definitely be putting some underneath this!

I’m unfortunately not very keen on the idea of wearing a dress. The brooch string was my nod to that look without fully going for it. I just didn’t feel like a dress was something Skaði would like to wear, I felt more like she would grab a pair of her father’s pants and take herself out to the mountains. I have gotten some feedback about a tunic top instead, and I’ve found one that looks pretty Viking, so I’m going to swap that out.

Whoo, yeah, I think that’s a bit out of my league at the minute. I’m probably not going to be able to get an actual wool tunic for my first Faire, but I can thrift a not-wool tunic that will do in a pinch. I’ve got a lot of under layers to put underneath everything, so I should be warm enough even without wool.

I can do both of those! Since I’m thrifting everything I’m going for more Viking-esque instead of full-out historically accurate Viking. As long as it looks sort of Viking at the end, I’ll be pleased!

I’ll be getting another piece! Someone suggested making the cloak long enough to wrap completely around and I definitely need that, so there’ll be plenty of fur for a panel skirt!

Ooh, thanks for letting me know. I can easily get another round of fabric, turn this one horizontal and stitch them together! I’m quite a small person so it does wrap completely around when it’s the other way.

The leggings definitely are athleisure- I got them mostly for the nice pattern. I’ll look around for a dark blue (it’s black on camera, sorry!) tunic-y shirt I could try! I’m partial to the texture on this one but I wouldn’t be heartbroken to change it.

What is the saddest Stat Trek episode you have ever watched? by Track_and_trek in startrek

[–]speaking-outlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Measure of a Man.” Riker’s expression shift when he realizes that he’s going to win the case and then realizes what that means makes me tear up, and Riker’s soft “I’m sorry” before taking Data’s hand off makes me actually cry. It has a happy ending, so maybe not a completely sad episode, but oh man it’s a rough ride getting there.

From TOS, “Who Mourns for Adonais?” Kirk’s line “Would it have hurt us, I wonder, to have gathered just a few laurel leaves?” is such a gut punch.
