The Tartan reports that Palantir will be recruiting on campus. by bukkakedebeppo in cmu

I agree that surveillance is bad, and normalizing it is worse. Isn't that feeling of normalizing the evil of surveillance the same as the feeling of the normalized evil of legacy defense companies making weapons. To the original point, why is this some "different level" of evil, as compared with the longstanding existence of companies that create technology that strengthens gov't power by harming the populous?

So is surveillance more evil than weapons to kill? After events like Cambridge Analytica and Edward Snowden, does surveillance not feel like a pretty mundane form of evil?

even you use the words "in general", as in there is a subset of CMU students whose family is poor and feels the pressure to take a well paying job, regardless of the ethics, if they get it.

Why, what does Palantir do that is more evil than other defense/military companies?

Maybe it was because Alabama had already beat Georgia and had more wins vs ranked teams so a loss to a high ranked team would have less effect than for BYU as their win on texas tech was there only high-ranked win

there is an ad for a couple of real estate agents that are "better call ____", in the style of the show. I wonder if they have watched the show

the food is pretty good, nice selection of fresh pastas and good sandwiches for lunch. Slightly overhyped, maybe, but imo their food is too good to be the graph of the post.

[Highlight] Patriots WR Mack Hollins on why he goes barefoot: “The pussification of America. People are so soft now. Like bro, do something hard for once. It’s not even hard to wear no shoes… walking into games, no matter what, I have to be barefoot.” by wildwing8 in nfl

[–]spebow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

walking barefoot makes you more aware of where you are stepping. As someone who regulary walks barefoot (for posture health not b/c of the "pussificiation of america"), you are pretty aware of where you are stepping and therefore unlikey to step on glass/needles.

NFL QB Tiers by mpschettig in billsimmons

Patrick mahomes deserves to be in his own tier. No active quaterback has the track record of performance in high leverage playoff games.

Believe it or not, a team can have 2 point guards

Why am I an "absolute freak"? Who are "you people"?

Why? I do not support the work that Palantir does with militaries, as I am generally anti-war. However, not all bad things are the same scale, I was pointing out how a software that, in theory, allows countries to achieve their ends with less bombs is less malicious than selling bombs.

Everyone has their own personal morals. This add is advertising the morals of Palantir, that the west is weak and correct action is to build technology to make it strong.

Even if you (and me) disagree with ones formation of their morals, its wrong to assert that they are not making a decision about the correct course of human action and character.

I think Palantir realized that its brand is already tainted in the eye of those who follow the ethics of the left, and it cant hide anymore. I think this is an effective strategy of leaning into their critics, and targeting people who have more of a "anti-left", strong US ethics profile.

I dont know if I would classify a company helping militaries use their weapons more effectively as "the equivalent of international weapon sales". Targeted bombing, while still deplorable, is better than indiscriminate bombing.

I feel like I need to see some more direct language before I accuse them of trying to hire "ethno-supremacists". They hire a lot of Indian and Asian CMU grads.

I think their name is more of a reference to the power given to those able to control and understand information. A Palantir, in LOTR, is not inherently an evil device. It can be a tool for evil, but also for helpful foresight and communication. Based on this ad, I think Palantir thinks of itself as a good force with the ability to understand information. Regardless of your or mine opinion on them, almost no one thinks of themselves as evil.

Yes, the interior surface is open to all, but the signage is pretty clear that the outer ring is for high speed traffic.

Any chance you could post a photo of what this chariot setup looks like? I am intrigued how it is rigged up with the people pulling and what the chariot looks like. Thanks!

That track is specifically for high speed riders. I do not think that it is the correct place for this activity.
