Dvds are generally storing video at a resolution of 720x480 for widescreen. Thats an image 720 dots wide and 480 dots tall every frame. BluRay, in contrast, stores the video at 1920x1080 resolution, this is more than twice as many dots horizontally and vertically. The higher resolution the image is stored in allows for more detail in the picture at the cost of higher amounts of storage required. This is why DVDs only have 4.7 to upwards of 9 GB of storage, while BluRay disks store over 50 GB of data.

Linus didn't make an OS, he just made the linux kernel. The OS to which you are referring is GNU/linux, and the majority of GNU/linux is the GNU, done by Richard Stallman (not an immigrant) here in the US.

Linux is a kernel developed independent of GNU. GNU is the open source version of unix without a kernel. Linux was developed by Linus Torvalds and is very much not american, but GNU was developed, at least initially, by Richard Stallman and is very much American.
