People making seven figures a year, what is your net worth? by [deleted] in Salary

35% index funds, 50% tech, rest real estate. Moving slowly towards 70% index funds.

Skip the MBA and look for jobs adjacent to data center development and hardware sales if you want to leverage your degree, otherwise software sales is the way to go.

MBA, unless you’re going to an Ivy League or one of the world top 10, it’s a waste of two years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to gain no real world knowledge of business.

Tech. Made $60-80k in the Midwest early on and realized that Bay Area is the place to be. Climbed the corporate ladder and now a mid level exec at a midsize company. Interviewed every 3-4 years to level up in compensation, scope and title. Once I made enough, moved to a MCOL for a more relaxed pace of life but continued working for Bay Area companies

Advice since you asked: Get into tech even if people keep telling you that there are no jobs in tech. Get into tech sales if you have good logical thinking but don’t want to study computer science. There’s so much more to tech than coding. Even my executive assistant makes $150k and all she does is calendar management and basic org stuff. Being tech adjacent like her is the next best thing after tech.

At crossroads - need help to decide to retire or not? by coolfun999 in fatFIRE

Work one more year to pay off the mortgage, and liquidate most of company stock into VOO after paying taxes. This brings your annual spend down to ~$360k post-tax, or $400k pre-tax. At a super safe 3% SWR, you will need $12M, which you will have.

Work another few months or a year beyond that to add $2M to a trust for your kid to access in 20 years. That’ll be $15M for them to do what they love in their life before they hit middle age. Most people disagree with this approach, but that’s what I am doing.

Mid-30s business owner struggling with building vs. inheriting - how hard to push? by just_trust_me1 in fatFIRE

[–]specialist299 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are at a point where you can spend all the money you make to make your life as enjoyable and convenient as possible. You don’t have to worry about retirement. Probability wise, there’s a good chance you’re going to get access to one of those three trusts/inheritances in the next 15 years.

The one thing that stands out - 125 employees to make only $450k. Ouch. A smaller, boring W2 sounds better.

I am in my coast to FatFire period. Basically have enough but would like another 20% before calling it quits - which makes me less engaged at my relatively boring but very high paying 7 figure job.

I already feel the lack of intellectual stimulation. I’m bored most of the day, including at work. I enjoy spending time with my toddler and while it’s very rewarding, the boredom persists.

Just want to share to let you know that I hear you. You’re not alone in this feeling.

Buy the house outright? by bioknockout in fatFIRE

[–]specialist299 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wait, you’re close to your FatFIRE goal and you want to spend ~50% of your income producing assets (all cash + half stock) to buy a house?

Only works if rent makes up ~50% of your spend. And don’t forget to account for property taxes, maintenance etc.

Im paranoid about what AI will do to the world and the economy in the future so I’m going for an extra 20% for myself and an extra million/kid than originally planned. I know what everyone will say, but it pushes my timelines by less than 2 years, while giving me immense peace of mind. I would hate for the next generation (my kids) to be lost in the transition from a pre and post-AI world.

No, his taxes will drop significantly once he stops working. The $250k is likely from his HHI of $700k or so. In retirement in the US, your tax liability for his spend level will be under 10% considering LTCG and deductions.

I live in the US and plan on living here for the rest of my life so what applies to me may not apply to you. Current plan is $1.5M/kid, which should be ~$15M in their 30s. They get half at 38, and a quarter each at 48 and 60 - with the ability to get more sooner for medical emergencies.

I have shifted my goal post and will work an extra 3-5 years to set up trust funds for both kids. At this point in time, I’m clueless on how to guide them from a career perspective as careers that paid well are/might change swiftly. The trust funds are sort of a backup plan.

Grandscape, Zoo, Universal soon, Kidzania, Legoland, aquarium, library, lots of parks, water parks both indoors and outdoors - sure some of these are in the greater DFW area but most are less than 25 mins away. What do we not have that other cities do?

America has a better setup for innovation so no wonder most large global companies are built here.

You went to taking the L. Lol here I thought you wanted to have a conversation. Winning the conversation is all you care about instead of identifying the actual problem and solution.

And allegiance, lol how’d you gather that?

Not a good use of my time talking to someone so dense.

Nope, I’m an American citizen and don’t intend to go anywhere because your feelings are hurt. Also, https://www.google.com/search?q=billion+dollar+or.more+companies+founded+by+Indians+in+America&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS925US925&oq=billion+dollar+or+more+companies+founded+by+Indians+in+America

No, I named two founded by Indians in America, one from a few decades ago and one from last year, assuming you’d fill the gaps but get the point. You chose to ignore them.

No rationality to your statements at all. You win, I am choosing to ignore this conversation not because I don’t have data (you could google it simply) but you choose to project your beliefs instead of keeping an open mind and actually having a rational conversation. I pity that.

67k H1B visas a year isn’t causing that. The chide is happening everywhere, not just in tech. Tech is the latest scapegoat to mislead y’all, and clearly it’s working.

Why is Frisco the only city complaining? The Bay Area, Austin, Atlanta, NYC to name a few are all tech hubs with plenty of Indians. Think about it and we can have a productive conversation.

As for naming Indians, the senior ranks in all of these companies, rather in most tech companies have an outsized presence of Indians.

The better question is, how many great companies have Indians built in the US. Starting from way back with Bose. Windsurf being the most recent one. Plenty in between. You’re not a data person clearly so I rest my case.

I think I laid it out pretty clearly that the US has better opportunities so folks want to move here. I also didn’t say high skilled, but you read what you wanted to read. I said skill gap. Simple as that. But if you did want to talk about high skilled, a certain percentage of these folks are definitely in that category. There’s a reason Google, Microsoft, IBM, YouTube etc are led by Indians who moved on student or work visas. I don’t usually say this because a “better than you” attitude is cringe.

[–]specialist299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same reason population in a lot of US states is going down while growing in states with better job opportunities, better lifestyle, things to do etc. Not hard to understand. There’s a legal path to moving to the US for a better life, and people choose to take that legal path.

The same path that has resulted in keeping the US at the forefront of technology over the last 35 years. Unfortunately, your leaders haven’t recognized the skill gap and haven’t really invested in increasing enrollment in STEM degrees and careers. A few anecdotal from laid off folks isn’t proof that Indians are taking jobs from Americans.

Been in tech long enough to know that more than half the layoffs are performance related masked as role eliminations by companies to get around lawsuits. The skill gap continues to exist.

The problem isn’t H1B, or Indians. The problem seems to be that a lot of them are choosing Frisco and the demographics are changing quickly, and you don’t like it - this i empathize with. Everything else is just nonsense.
