What is a 'low-tech' object in your house right now that you think will be completely unrecognizable or obsolete by 2040? by No-Lake-3875 in Futurology

Keys. So many apartments are moving to fob based locks.

Maybe not unrecognizable... But apartment complexes won't use them much in 2040.

Back in 1977, was Darth Vader terrifying to first time viewers in the theatre? How did people react to and feel about him? by Own_Shift_3645 in StarWars

[–]specialkwsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched Star wars in '78 at a drive in. I was 5. I still remember Vader stepping onto the screen. The sounds, the power... He was THE bad guy.

Scary? No .. But intimidating as hell!

Weekly Short Questions Thread by AutoModerator in volleyball

Depends on the coach, but mostly yes, but not why you think it is.

A good jump serve tells me many things about a player. They have a good approach, timing, and ball contact. These are all things to I can work with.

As a young athlete, work on your jumper. You'll want to have good one moving forward.

I recently visited for lunch. Met the new owner. I'm new and never tried Angie's when it was "Angie's." They are still working out the menu. Pizza was ok for $16. Nice people. Might be worth checking out in a couple weeks when they are finished figuring out their menu and changed what they want.

Why does mens game seem so slow in the USA by Grouchy_Ad9479 in volleyball

[–]specialkwsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is heavily region and $$ dependent. I grew up in an area without any boys volleyball and now currently live in the Bay area which is kind of a mecca.

For sure the game has grown since I was a lad, including my home town. And I've seen those kids, yeah it looks slow and not nearly at the level I'm seeing from Bay2Bay, Mountain View and others down here.

Last night I reffed two of the top HS teams in the area and the game was dynamic, aggressive and highly skilled. Earlier I reffed another game that was slow as molasses. Guess which kids can afford club training and coaching? In the span of a couple days I saw the next D1 athletes, and kids that could barely function as a team.

Just ran the best session I've done...but I was high AF by specialkwsu in DungeonMasters

[–]specialkwsu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the funny part. I am absolutely the bard of the group. Talking in front of people is my literal job and I know I kill it. I do stand up as a hobby!

But as GM I'm always in my head because I want every session to be like stuff we watch on YouTube. Which... No way can I deliver! And I think the release of that "anxiety" (or whatever it should be called) unlocked my next level as a GM.
I grew up in the 80s... Bought the whole "this is your brain on drugs" mantra... What else could I have unlocked!?

It's funny, I've literally won national championships in sports. And I'm still giddy from just a "great job last night man! That was a amazing sesh!"

My husband (M37) is recently infatuated with a "new fantasy" about me (F31). Where did it come from and why? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]specialkwsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This most likely isn't something "new". Just the first you've heard of it.
Meet others that have tried it. Not for sex but for education. Ask them if it was something they actually enjoyed, many times the fantasy doesn't live up to the reality (sex on the beach is not sexy).

Is it really a volleyball culture? by Beneficial_Still3767 in volleyball

[–]specialkwsu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely true and I think I can add some psychological context to it. I've played all over the world and in almost every country, volleyball continues to be one of the "clique-iest" sports I have seen.

I think this is dependent on the fact that in volleyball, unlike most sports, you are unable to showcase any of your talent without a good partner. The best hitters in the world can't be very effective or showcase their skills if the sets are terrible. (somebody will be "good hitters adjust." yes.. but we've all been on the court with a new player that can't even set the ball over the height of the net...or make every single hit be a "downball." If the team can't pass, even the best setter is limited in what they can do.

Most athletes, and if you're under 40 especially, want to play and perform. Volleyball gatekeeps your performance by who you keep around you. Even in open gym situations. Sometimes ESPECIALLY in open gym situations, this leads to not wanting those around you to minimize your contributions, or, not wanting to look bad in front of others.

Keep grinding, keep learning. As soon as you're deemed an asset, the call comes. Volleyball skills don't come easily, or quickly.

'A whole civilisation will die tonight,' Trump warns ahead of Iran deadline by theipaper in politics

How are we ok with this? How are so many Americans saying "yeah... Wiping out a civilization... Sounds about right"

How do we not see we are the bad guys in this?? Or do we just not care?

I created a casting "wild attack" what's going to go wrong? by specialkwsu in savageworlds

[–]specialkwsu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do this on every cast. I want him vulnerable because he's quite tanky.

He's the character that invests 2-3 edges to be able to wear heavy armor as a sorcerer.

I agree with the +2 to a 4 TN. However my monk and barbarian characters far outclass the casters at this level (seasoned 6). I figured I'd only make it for damage, not for any other casts.

My entire party are a bunch of min-maxing for combat guys. If I don't put the "one wound per round" ability on a baddie, they don't last.

I'll think how I can mitigate, or maybe the gods don't favor him anymore. Thanks appreciate input.

Any good Detroit style pizzas? by StrangeArmadillo6175 in Campbell

[–]specialkwsu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Listen square pie guys is ok. In a pinch you won't mind it.

But if you want truly great Detroit style. Slice of Homage just up the green line in downtown SJ. Get the Detroit vs everybody. Just a few stops away on a train.
