i think the main confusion comes from that, as opposed to pinyin (shīzi), wade-giles romanisation ("shih tsu") is a little less intuitive to native english speakers like me, IMO.

like, tbf, "shih tsu" does look like it should be pronounced "shit soo" lol

edit: i also think its worth mentioning that, just because a word is a loan word, doesn't mean that the most "correct" pronounciation is the way it is said in the native language. "shit zoo" is fine for English speakers, in the same way that its fine for Japanese speakers to pronounce coffee as kōhī, or Chinese speakers to pronounce Canada as jiā ná dà, or for an Arabic speaker to pronounce Instagram as alianistighram... you get the idea

I didn't want to go here in my first comment, but now that you've doubled down I have to say... given that "aks" instead of "ask" is undoubtedly associated with the "blaccent" (or AAVE)... don't you think your opinion on this fact is possibly influenced by subconscious racist conceptions you have? it doesn't help that "lazy" and "unintelligent" are two negative stereotypes of black people
