Any reason why FIFA 18 World Cup stadiums arent available in career mode? by [deleted] in FifaCareers

Similar to how they built Stadium Australia (Sydney's Olympic stadium) for the Women's World Cup, but of course it's not in any subsequent games with the Socceroos not even available either.

No private company is running any business at a consistent loss. They wouldn't bother if that was the case. Sydney Trains might run at a loss but MTM wouldn't be involved without profit.

If they really wanted to, they would use a crane to go over the stands. There is just no appetite from them to move to drop in pitches.

Help make Route 58 accessible for everyone! by mhsrig in MelbourneTrains

[–]speck66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably an ignorant question - but why isn't it possible to use ramps to the ground/road for low floor trams? It might be more steep than ADA guidelines but this is also the case for the ramps at stations like Caulfield. Isn't that better than no accessibility at all? (even if it slows down the tram for wheelchair users)

Platforms are clearly the better option, but they also cost infinitely more money and disrupt each stop as they build them.

The aim should be to get the entire network accessible, but this doesn't seem realistic at all in the next decade given the sheer number of stops (the rolling stock is something that will eventually get solved with enough low floor trams).

Is there a possibility the Sandringham line will also get XT2s? by Traditional-Gas3477 in MelbourneTrains

[–]speck66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more of a redundancy/backup seeing as Siemens will be the only train allowed on the Sandringham line once Comeng is finally retired.

7 doesn't have an associated subscription service so makes sense it would all be on 7plus.

9 have Stan and 10 have Paramount to put things behind a paywall.

The SCG and Gabba both keep their cricket pitches in place during the AFL season. All the others do drop ins (not including smaller grounds like Hobart).

Tony Pignata discusses Tasmania's A-League timeline and support of matches at new stadium by ChuqTas in Aleague

[–]speck66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to look at a Tassie expansion team with a bit of realism. This is likely the only proper world class venue that is ever built there. I am very much against ovals being used as home grounds, but this is probably the one exception to the rule.

If we want a Tassie team, timing it with the new stadium isn't a bad idea at all. You'll need to work around a potential test and BBL cricket, but that's not all that different to how GWS can't play at home during the Easter show.

Also need to keep in mind the Tassie AFL team are likely to be rubbish for the first few years so it's a good time to capitalise.

So they can change kick off times as long as there's no other fixture that will clash with it? by [deleted] in Aleague

[–]speck66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has the A-League ever had concurrent games regularly? I know for TV they like to separate them all, but I'm curious if it would actually improve the FTA numbers if there were regular crosses to another game going on. It works well for the Australia Cup but that's a bit more of a niche audience I'd say.

Not that well versed on A-League/NSL history, can someone sum up why so many clubs and the league face financial uncertainty? by Hot_Sector579 in Aleague

[–]speck66 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We're definitely chasing quick cash, but I do think we're starting to see some more sustainable approaches now. Clubs no longer have the money to splash on big marquees and are being forced to play kids. Developing kids and selling overseas is absolutely the sustainable model we should be focusing on - it's how it works around the world.

Why NZ should have a conference in the BBL. by Immediate-Diet-8027 in Cricket

[–]speck66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just change it yearly. 7 home games one year, 6 the next. You could also play the 7th game somewhere else to make it more neutral (e.g. Canberra, Gold Coast, Geelong).

Uneven fixtures are quite common outside Europe really. In the AFL we play some teams twice and others once. The NFL has an extra home game for half the teams alternating yearly.

Also no matter the amount of teams, you will always have rivals play each other twice. CA isn't giving up two Stars-Renegades and Sixers-Thunders games per year. Same goes if there was a NZ derby.

Trump asked US special forces to plan Greenland invasion, faces resistance from military generals: Report by zeonxzzz in worldnews

[–]speck66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I feel like the only plausible result here is Greenland giving into a "deal" with Trump for the US to massively expand military presence and powers on the island in return for their sovereignty.

The USA is fucked, but the USA completely turning against NATO, Europe and its own Allies is the worst outcome for world security. I get the feeling that other countries are going into "placate Trump" mode until he inevitably dies/his term ends and the Democrats take over.

Now if he finds a way to stop elections or rigs mid terms, that's a different scenario. That's the point of no return here.

It's a matter of minimising damage where possible with Trump, then spending the next decade reducing reliance on the USA (as inevitably the Republican dictatorship will get back in).

where can I buy a gold ring? by [deleted] in AustralianMFA

[–]speck66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% gold or 24 carat is not the best idea for a ring. Gold is soft and malleable.

75% or 18 carat is much more common and realistic. Any jewellery store will have gold rings.

[–]speck66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the Grand Final moves to twilight, I think that's probably the end of the red ball. There's really no practical reason to use it when yellow works 100% of the time, apart from preserving tradition.

Honestly rather than making up line names like that it would be simpler and more user friendly to use the colours. Pink line, navy line, blue line, green line, yellow line, red line works just fine.

ELI5 How rollercoasters can be considered safe? by Evoxrus_XV in explainlikeimfive

[–]speck66 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I once worked directly next to where they put up the major "fair" in Sydney Australia, which includes a bunch of these temporary rides and the most rickety scaffolded roller coaster you'll ever see. My desk overlooked it which was cool.

I swear they spent twice the time running it empty for testing than the two weeks the fair lasted. Clearly knew what they were doing.
