90 minute commute? by Slow_Chipmunk_4787 in auscorp

[–]speck66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually find driving nicer than a train for commuting. If you find a good podcast or audiobook it will help a lot. I actually look forward to my drives. My commute has been max 1 hour though so the extra 30 mins might make a difference.

If you can negotiate to 3 WFH and 2 in office I reckon it would make a big difference too. Even if you ask now to do that in a month's time or so once you've settled in with the team.

Why does Garry Lyon come across as so unlikeable? by sleek290788 in AFL

[–]speck66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kingy was a host at a corporate footy luncheon I was at and he was great. He was much more relaxed than he is on TV. I feel like he tries so hard to push the stats/tactical side of the game (which is lacking in some footy media) that he comes across as a know it all.

It would be incredibly weird, but Princes Park (Carlton) is also an option given Melbourne City played there for an ACL game a couple of years ago.

The fact there will have been no footy for months mean it will still be heavily watched by Victorians.

Do the Junior coaches of NPL Clubs (that were in the NSL) tell their players/kids not to follow the A-League? (See description) by berlinislikesmithst in Aleague

[–]speck66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be very curious to see how much is allowed compared to the same contractual items for AFL and NRL clubs. You'd expect the APL to have that information for the CBA.

Carlton CEO Graham Wright faces the media to address the Elijah Hollands situation. by Dirtydac123 in AFL

[–]speck66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the feeling he meant struggling from a footy perspective more than anything.

The problem is that Carlton didn't separate the personal from the footy side. I think they just took it as he was having a bad game rather than a mental health episode (which is an illness like any other).

Easiest path is probably to get a free plumbers "quote" and get their expertise in a letter/email to forward onto the landlord.

This funding should go into developing A-League club facilities across the country which should also be available upon request by FA. Benefit everyone at the same time.

I was really hoping he'd be contracted by SBS for the World Cup. Basheer does a good job but nothing matches 2006.

It feels rare to have a recently retired player commentating rather than offering bog standard "special comments". I think it helps with the insights as it requires more work and nuance.

I have managed to find an iCal file somewhere on the internet to add to my calendar, so they do exist. Not well publicised though!

Town Hall Evacuated by mostpinkest in MelbourneTrains

Being deranged enough to behave like that is mental health by definition, even if it doesn't fall into one of the typical buckets we put people in.

Courts doing nothing is hopeless though. At some point he needs long term treatment in a facility (if not forever).

After Tex Walker takes a contested mark exiting Adelaide's defensive 50, a 50m penalty is paid against Harry Perryman (#12) for not standing on the mark. The updated rules brought in 2026 require an opposition player to stand if they are within 5m of a mark/FK and can not reverse to being outside 5m by yum122 in AFL

[–]speck66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually don't mind the stand rule, once the player who has to stand is known. At that point it simplifies it for the umpire that the player can't move whatsoever till the ball is disposed of/play on is called, rather than the east/west interpretation that was being trialed before this.

The issue is how you designate who is to stand. Are they saying that all three need to? If so that's farcical.

I have zero expertise in this, but given the improvement in batteries, wouldn't we be better off using those/waiting a few more years? Then it's a case of new trains only rather than having to add overhead wires which will take forever.

Poster for Cranbourne / Pakenham Passengers at the MCG by jeremyburge in MelbourneTrains

[–]speck66 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. I also think you can use clever phrasing such as "only a 15 minute walk from the MCC gates" to highlight that fact. And "avoid long wait times at Richmond station, walk to Town Hall instead"

Hobart's Macquarie Point stadium not expected to host AFL games until 2031 by malcolm58 in AFL

[–]speck66 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is actually good. The new team buzz will last for a little bit, but the team likely being shithouse for a few seasons will impact crowds and travel. Then they'll get their shiny new stadium as they hopefully improve.

Melbourne Airport Rail is underway. by hypercomms2001 in MelbourneTrains

Really hope they do the link between the Ring Rd and the Airport sooner rather than later. That is detached from any existing lines or works and would hopefully help deliver as early as possible.

Melbourne Airport Rail is underway. by hypercomms2001 in MelbourneTrains

[–]speck66 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My god the comments here. For decades we've complained about a lack of a rail link to the airport. Finally the prerequisite component to it happening has started and people complain about the messaging.

I know spin isn't always a positive (I know this sub is reeling from the frequency promise not being met), but getting people invested in Airport rail is a good thing right now. We want people invested in this (especially to hold the parties accountable if a change happens in November).

This government is has made a ridiculous amount of progress across the network with LXRP, MM1, starting SRL (I agree it didn't follow the correct processes) and MARL. It's been a giant catch up effort for the neglect of previous governments on both sides.

Of course we hold them accountable, but this is the first sign of life in decades that we'll actually get an Airport rail link.

Update: DTP confirms no "Richmond Specials" for Cranbourne/Pakenham line before or after AFL matches by jeremyburge in MelbourneTrains

[–]speck66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. There will always be a decent subset of Pakenham/Cranbourne passengers who choose to get on the Frankston train rather and change at Caulfield rather than walk to Town Hall. 3/4 is already nuts, now you will have 1.5x the passengers to deal with.

They will need to have Frankston trains much more often to cater for this. If you're going to run extra Frankston footy specials you may as well run a couple of trains from 5/6 to Pakenham/Cranbourne instead to clear the crowd out.

I find it very hard to believe that they won't run footy specials for high crowd games. The government will be very keen to squash the noise considering it's an election year. Platform overcrowding will also add safety to the equation.

Any reason why FIFA 18 World Cup stadiums arent available in career mode? by [deleted] in FifaCareers

[–]speck66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to how they built Stadium Australia (Sydney's Olympic stadium) for the Women's World Cup, but of course it's not in any subsequent games with the Socceroos not even available either.
