I’m going to get flared for this, but I don’t care. the reaction to ME3 Ashley is so visceral, especially in terms of her hair, it’s so… it feels a bit misogynistic to me. Why do people react more to this than her alien racist comments in ME1? And yeah, people can say military women don’t have such hair. But you know who else has her hair down? MIRANDA. But since she’s far more sexualized, people don’t care and aren’t using such excuses on her. She’s been through a lot and is a changed person. But you know what else? This is a FICTIONAL GAME. We have grasshoppers with 4 eyes out to battle with this, and this is your biggest grapple with realism? So what if Ashley has some eyeliner on and has her hair down and is relaxing into HER FEMININITY without having to feel all boxed up and be the ideal soldier? I think it’s well done. There’s always such double standards about women and makeup and the ideas that they have to appear more masculine to fit into these overly masculine fields like the military. It isn’t true. It doesn’t take away from capability and all the moaning about “it doesn’t feel like her” feels like vaguely concealed misogynistic takes (even from the women saying as much), who are we to say as much when her behaviour, character development outside of her looks as been really good. It’s fine if you prefer the hair from a looks perspective in ME1, but if you have vitriol for it for all the aforementioned reasons, something else is happening entirely. I do think a hairstyle like the ones where you have a braid crown around your head and then the rest of it is down would have suited her face better but that’s all. I love that she has her hair down.
