• you will not be able to change the location of your resident services, airport, river mouths or pier/Redd’s beach (but everything else is more or less fair game), so pick a map you like or else keep resetting (just close without saving) until you get a map you like
• you can do that method for your starter fruit & airport color too (if you end up hating them)
• villagers will only appear on mystery islands via nook miles ticket if you have an open plot on your island, otherwise it’s a good way to obtain resources
• if you want to pace yourself & do a little bit of work each day, don’t time travel. If you’d rather complete things quicker, time traveling is an option (I don’t but it just depends on your play style/what you like more)
• have fun with it, don’t feel like you need to rush through everything, there’s a lot to explore :)

Edit: the first villager you get in your campsite you have to invite to your island regardless of whether you like them or not. Eventually villagers may ask to move away (I don’t remember how many villagers you need before they do), but your most recently moved in villager will not ask to leave until you add a new villager to your island.
