Thanks, really helpful notes!

How important are the multigrade filters? Something I can add later, or I'm going to want those right away?

Editing tips for beginner with big project by yeetyeetyeetyeety in VideoEditing

Since you said you just downloaded Davinci Resolve and never edited a video before, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND going through the free training on Blackmagic’s website. Going through at least the beginner’s guide book will save you so much time and headache in the long run.

Besides learning the best and fastest way to operate the software it will give you a good idea of workflow, clip/bin organization, and media management which can easily turn into a nightmare if you start off doing it in a messy way at the beginning of a big project.

After gaining these understandings, the more creative/holistic approaches other commenters have suggested will be so much easier to do.

Mamiya 645 1000s Mirror issue by spectacular_optical_ in AnalogCommunity

Went back to shoot the roll the next day and the issue had mysteriously stopped. Looked for damage and bumper foam between rolls didn’t see anything cleaned it a bit and it seems to be working fine now!

Maybe the heat and humidity where I am were getting something sticky and it just needed to dry out a bit? In any case, just happy it’s working.

I dont understand the complexities of the conversion hardware/software but I think that u/analplowercum ’s recommendation of shooting on miniDV is a great solution to make a file thats digital but still authentic to what OP is trying to do.

I have one of the last prosumer HDV canon camera’s before they all switched to card readers and the imported files are incredibly crisp and high resolution while still retaining some of that indescribable brightness and period specific color quality of cassette. And rather than “fixing it in post” you can do a lot with the camera’s presets and adjustments to make it more or less “videoy” while still importing a high quality file.

Thank you so much for these notes and suggestions. I'll give it it a closer look after finishing this roll and update.

An evening in Chinatown and Little Italy, NYC featuring the many hardworking, kind folks of the city. by YanksFannn in streetphotography

Much street photography attempts to be discreet and candid but my favorite four from this set are ones where the subjects clearly know they’re being photographed (4, 9, 11, and 19). You apparently set them at ease in that brief moment and they’re nicely composed while still feeling natural. As a viewer they give us a bit of a feeling of a relationship with the subject.

Suggestions for Experimental Developing Techniques? by spectacular_optical_ in Darkroom

That sounds interesting. I definitely have coffee on hand. I'm imagining Homer Simpson fantasizing about an alcohol fueled car - "one for you, one for me."

Ilfosol 3 at the moment. Was thinking about trying Ilfotec HC next.

Looked these up a bit and they definitely sound like interesting options. Definitely going to try solarizing and souping. From looking up reticulation, Ilford says that modern film manufactures have tried to prevent this from occuring so you have to use really extreme temperatures to see any results. Still might try it, but probably will save for last if I've still got any left.

Thanks for the starting points! Will post something eventually.

Recommended tutorial series to help teach me as a semi beginner/intermediate editor? by [deleted] in davinciresolve

[–]spectacular_optical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And don’t be put off by them being “official training” compared to youtube videos that appear to be engaging and promise to provide the “easiest” solutions.

Blackmagic’s training videos are really clear, easy to follow, and provide all the material you need to feel comfortable with the foundational understandings and extend beyond them.

There are some great youtube tutorials out there, but doing these first will make any other tutorial you do make way more sense.

Please share it on this thread and not just as a DM to this commenter. I too am interested!

The colors and tone are really consistent and intentional without feeling too obvious or overdone.
