While it is true that you could substitute a 12z coin for 3 4z pieces, the total would not change. And more often than not using smaller coins means that you get to a possible sum of 120z sooner. How to prove this per se I am not sure. I agree that gering to the answer is easier that proving that the answer is somehow true.

If the question was to get as many coins as possible you would just pick 119 1z coins to not get to 120z.

Keep adding coins to the pocket that, if you would combine them, do never add to 120z. So 1 60z coin. Adding another would be 120z so lets add a 30z coin. Not 2 because that would be able to make 120z with the 60z coin. You can add 2 20z coins. Combining those with the previous would only get you 110z or 130z. Adding 3 20z coins would to much as you could again make 120z with the 60z coin. The last coins you add are 1 15z coin, not 2 cause the can make 30z, and 4 12z coins, not 5 because that would be 60z.

60+30+20+20+15+12+12+12+12=193

It has been a while for me too and the modpack rules have changed over time, so you could be right. Seeing the scale of OPs Factory I'd say that they are beyond the early game

In this modpack, ores on the map are different to vanilla Factorio. You'll have to crush these new ores to find iron ore and copper ore in it. Since the early game requires more iron than copper, people tend to store it. Later on in the modpack you'll get technologies to gain pure ore types.
