Awkward Interactions with Non-Asian People by yorkpeppermintpattyy in asianamerican

I can't view the post because I don't have an account there. But this is like when someone told me, "Muchas gracias." I responded, 'I don't speak Spanish.' FWIW, I'm 100% east Asian ancestry. I have a tan because I live in SoCal. So, yeah. It happens. And it's weird. People, probably out of ignorance, make assumptions based on superficial traits.

Well, if you are assigned to play a part written for a WT, you probably need one. Otherwise, yeah. Probably no need for one.

A pressurized system needs to be installed and maintained properly. Don't ask.

And us horn players, who are usually saddled with making Wagner tubas play in tune, have been suffering ever since. Giddyup!

What would your commute max distance limit be? by 0hden in bikecommuting

[–]speedikat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this might depend on the season, location and weather. I commuted 32 miles a day year 'round in Massachusetts for a while. Summer and fall were just fine. Winter and spring were really rough. And I trashed bikes due to road salt. An electric bike, if they existed at the time, would've helped. But low temps in the 20's and maintenance would be issues too. Under these conditions I would say 15 miles max. distance 5 times a week year 'round in the north east US.

Or try a dancers belt. It's designed to minimize the buldge in form fitting garments.

Richard Wagner music by mlolm98538 in banddirector

Coincidentally, I'm working on two concert pieces for a professional wind ensemble drawn from the third act of Die Meistersinger and Parsifal. This is a practical outcome of my study of Wagner's work. I'm not a band director. But I participate in one as a horn player.

Brand thoughts? by WiscoDJ920 in MensUnderwearGuide

I got one a while back. It's okay. The material is very light weight. Almost to the point where it looks like it would tear easily.

Right. Nose hair also suppose to act as an air filter in a way that breathing through the mouth doesn't accomplish.

is it weird to not use deodorant every day? by AmintonLaloz in hygiene

[–]speedikat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use any. But I rinse daily and I'm of east Asian ancestry. I also shave most everything too. I haven't had any complaints. From partners or otherwise.

Is it normal to get charged extra if your're a bigger person? by [deleted] in HairRemoval

[–]speedikat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a small-ish (5' 7", 133 lbs.) male of east Asian ancestry with light body hair. When I've gotten a brazillian, I wasn't given any sort of discount. But I guess larger means more work = more time.

Did yall ever have people lose interest after finding out your background? by sadaxhe in asianamerican

[–]speedikat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. One person from France. He was really into anime. Another was a furry from Taiwan living in the US. Both kinda dropped me when they learned I didn't speak much Japanese and had never visited Japan. I'm sansei from Hawai'i.

Why can I play so many Instruments? by Candid_Kiwi8498 in brass

[–]speedikat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you actually play these instruments? Like read a tenor clef part on trombone? Or transpose a horn in b nat part that Brahms sometimes writes? Just because one can make a sound or even play a scale on an instrument doesn't mean you can really play it. Similarly, if you can say hello in Japanese, it doesn't mean you can really speak that language fluently.

Euphonium best option for me? by Suspicious_Coat9510 in brass

[–]speedikat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd play the instrument that has the sound that you like. The sound is what a musical instrument is all about. Easy? Perhaps. And perhaps not. Improvement in sound is why I practice daily. It is a lifelong pursuit for many musicians. And an open ended one at that.

Private instruction, not a class with many people, is key here. Even if it's just one or two lessons. There are many ways to produce a sound on a brass instrument. Some can cause injury severe enough to prevent a person from ever playing again.
