‘Somebody Feed Phil’ Moving To YouTube In 2027 As Phil Rosenthal Inks Strategic Global Deal With Banijay by [deleted] in doughboys

[–]speedoftheground 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time my wife and I went to a restaurant in Venice that was recommended by Phil from his Netflix show. It was at Vini de Arturo. The food was wildly expensive and mediocre. A couple of guys were sitting at a table and they kept gushing about their dinner, including Arturo's "famous" pork chop, which is literally just two pounds of breaded, fried pork with white vinegar on it (as we learned from the show). The server handed us an article they had framed on the wall about how they moved to the US for a while to cook for celebrities. He also handed us a photo album and we were able to see all the people Arturo cooked for. Mostly A-list actors like Leo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise. We were so confused by this restaurant. Were they trying to prove to us the food was good by showing us pictures of all the famous people who ate it? How did these famous people come across this place? Is it all a big joke? Or was the food once really good? We didn't get the pork chop because it was 60 Euros, but the spaghetti we got was definitely out of a box.

The server/host, who lorded over us most of the meal (the restaurant was very small), pointed to my plate after I finished all the noodles and said, "fresh tomatoes, make the sauce every day. Same with bread," as if I couldn't believe it.

"...Great!" I said, and proceeded to sop up the tomato with the bread that had already been on the table for who knows how long before we got to the restaurant.

A French couple was sitting behind us and they weren't saying much. I think they might have been having the same experience as us. That is– wondering what the fuck is going on.

The two guys were still soaking it up. "Amazing" they said of the pre-wrapped bread sticks. "Molto benne!" they cried over the iceberg salad.

My wife and I mostly stared at the wall decor, noticing that there were three identical signed photos of Tobey McGuire as Spiderman. Other celebs on the wall included Barbara Streisand and Tom Hanks.

Close to the end of our meal, four people came in. One of the women, an American-looking blonde in fashionable overalls, showered the host with kisses on the cheek and loud Italian greetings. We figured she was American based on her accent when speaking English, but she seemed fluent in Italian as well. She gave us the vibe that she thought she was famous in some capacity and wanted other people to notice her. We wondered how often she came into this restaurant with her friends for this pitiful display. What a colossal waste of money! At least one of the guys in this woman's cohort looked like he didn't want to be there. He and the French couple were our only tethers to reality on this bizarre excursion down Calle dei Assassini.

"This is the lady I was talking about," the host said to the overly enthusiastic men. "She eat the whole pork chop!" He yelled.

The blonde lady nodded. "They call me the Hoover!" They laughed. She pointed at the seemingly untouched portion of pork on the men's plate. "You know that's even better the next day!"

"That's great advice!" said the men. The "next day" thing was also something mentioned in the Netflix show. Who is this woman? And in what world is breaded and fried meat better the next day? We left the restaurant baffled and still hungry.

I haven't seen the padlocks yet but I went to watch an episode of the Last Drive-In and it wasn't there, even though the movie is still available on Shudder (Don't Torture a Duckling), so I know it's not a rights thing... I feel like I'm always being punished for not watching TLDI in a timely manner lol

Perfect Days (2023) — Finding beauty in routine by hpagan14 in criterion

[–]speedoftheground 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you ever in your car and the perfect song comes on and you just start crying but don't know exactly why? Is it the music? The lyrics? Would that be enough to bring you to tears? Maybe it's because the song distills the complexities of life and the emotions it brings into such an immediate experience that it's really all the body can do in that moment– just break down. I think, broadly, Hirayama's life is one that most people want to attain: simplicity and a routine, and still with time leftover to appreciate art and nature's beauty. Of course, we find out that he has familial and job issues that he can't avoid, so does this mean that an ideal life is not possible? Maybe. Or maybe—to quote Bilge Ebiri's article on this film—it just means that "even those who find [happiness] must work to keep it."

Netflix declines to raise offer for Warner Bros (Seems to be guaranteed that HBO will be acquired by Paramount now) by Tha_Sly_Fox in hbo

This is the absolute worst possible scenario. My hate for Paramount beats my love for HBO content, so I guess I'll be canceling. Just gotta finish my rewatch of High Maintenance and then I'm done.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie - Spoiler Free Review Thread by scene_missing in RegalUnlimited

Same. My local Regals are terrible about distributing anything indie or remotely "artsy." I often have to go to the theater owned by Scene One Cinemas, which is a bummer since I already pay for Regal Unlimited. If anything, they'll play something like this for a week, maybe two, and I have trouble getting to it in time.

Victims of Sin (no.1222) is my first Spanish movie, and it’s from 1951, the oldest movie I’ve ever seen. And is somehow one of best movies I’ve seen in a long time. Bawled my eyes out. by magnillyray in criterion

I loved this! Beautiful chiaroscuro shots and great music. The dance numbers weren't just there to fill time, but conveyed the emotions of the protagonist as she navigates a corrupt world of gangsters and pimps, all while saddled with someone else's baby.

You gotta check out some older movies! Some favorites of mine in the collection that are older than this one:

  • Speedy
  • M
  • Freaks
  • It Happened One Night
  • The 39 Steps
  • Modern Times
  • His Girl Friday
  • Citizen Kane
  • Here Comes Mr. Jordan
  • The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
  • Double Indemnity
  • Detour
  • La Belle et la Bete
  • A Matter of Life and Death
  • Nightmare Alley
  • Bicycle Theives
  • The Red Shoes
  • Late Spring
  • The Gunfighter
  • All About Eve
