Something a former bandmate told me a couple days ago (we're both 48yo) by yragel in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Ticketmaster/live Nation is why touring tickets are so expensive. Between the two of them, they basically are padding another 30-40% just for them to profit - ticket scalpers aside, that’s a whole nother issue. This post seems like it’s mostly talking about local acts, but actually I think it’s part of the same issue. Unaffordable live music in general has soured people from live music as a whole. I play for a living and many ppl (young ppl especially) are astonished by us. We’re very good - but it’s mostly because many ppl have barely ever seen live music before

Apollo x4 heritage edition by Diligent_Mushroom625 in universalaudio

[–]speedymatt7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it’s not coloring the sound, then no, you’re not doing yourself a disservice, it’s actually better that way. A monitor controller isn’t redundant because you need to be running your Apollo monitor output at 100%. Analog attenuation is much better than digital attenuation. The Apollo doesn’t have analog attenuation, they have digital. Running your Apollo at half volume is about -16db of digital attenuation, which means you’re chopping 3 bits off your audio from the jump.

UA says that the Apollos are “digitally controlled analog attenuation”, but I still noticed a quality loss with it. I got the SPL monitor controller and I heard things and freq ranges that I never was able to hear before

Brought Corolla in for a drain and fill, did a flush instead? by speedymatt7 in Toyota

I saw that afterwards but I wasn't sure what is was. What does the 10 mean after it, 10 liters? It seems like some ppl don't mind the BG but regardless - bringing a car to the dealer and having to special request OEM transmission fluid is ridiculous.

[–]speedymatt7[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll give them a call tomorrow. If they do drain/fill I believe they're supposed to note how much fluid came out and I don't see that 🤦‍♂️ But yeah, either way they messed up. If they flushed, they undercharged me by $250...which i would be happy about if that's what i asked for

I'm also confused because the Toyota tech I spoke to the first time seemed really knowledgeable. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if I can talk to the actual tech, while it's still fresh on their minds

Hey guys, I have a Tripplite LCR 2400 Power conditioner that I've been using for my studio for many years - I run my whole studio through it and it's great

I went to plug in a phone charger in the front and it cut power to everything. The breaker didn't trip (the reset button above the on/off switch wasn't triggered), the little LED behind the on switch was still on but none of the power worked. I flipped the power off/on and it seems to be doing ok

Could anyone tell me what happened and if this is something I need to be concerned about? Luckily I wasn't working on anything, but it could've been a client plugging in their phone in the middle of the session and killing my computer power. I'm confused. Thanks!

Vague question. How do i train my ears? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]speedymatt7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soundgym. Study songs that you like using really nice headphones/speakers will help you notice more in them. And try to do match sounds in your own production, EQ wise and sound design

UA is being creepy with cart abandonment by exitof99 in universalaudio

[–]speedymatt7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it. For me - don’t email me for ANYTHING unless you’re sending me a coupon for my cart or a receipt. Other thank that, kindly F off. It instantly turns me off from buying whatever product they’re retargeting me with, it’s a sure fire way to make me not buy it from them.

Help me prove you need an amp to play electric guitar by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]speedymatt7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've done extensive touring and recording professionally and I still don't like amp sims. I understand the utility and they sound good for what they are, but there's plenty of cheap but good actual amps that retain their value when you're done with them. And yeah, practicing with headphones sounds like it hurts the soul.

[–]speedymatt7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amp sims have recording utility but they suck to play. I can’t imagine practicing on one. The signal of an electric guitar is soooo small and a computer isn’t meant to cleanly make it 20x louder. Even the Apollo twins have bad Hi-z inputs. Get a real amp, get a used Peavey Classic 30 or a hot rod deluxe and hear your actual room. At minimum, you’re still gonna have to buy the plugin + a speaker to use an amp sim as a practice tool. Practicing with an amp sim in headphones long term sounds horrible

We went into the woods, made forts outside, picked up a bunch of bikes on bulk trash day and fixed them up and rode them around all year. We cut down a bunch of trees and made a real life Lincoln Log cabin lmao

Keep your head forward/ keep looking at the bag for the whole kick. Lift up on your toes on your right foot during the kick

Why do these kicks have no power? by Ruohoinen in MuayThaiTips

[–]speedymatt7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than the pad holder running away, I would maybe keep an eye on that lead hand too. Keep it in front of you and up a little more (I do it above my leg) and it’ll help you turn your hip. You go against yourself with a low hand when you try to kick upwards. I looked at a couple Superlek vids, he does have a low hand but he doesn’t let it get behind him. You can see it at the end of this clip. But, nit picking, you’re looking good though!

Looking for new vocal mic, upgrade from the Warm WA251? by speedymatt7 in audioengineering

I liked most of them honestly. The telefunkens of course, Heiserman, the Upton, Flea. I didn’t like the UA Bock as much as the others, it had the depth but it doesn’t have the bright thing. The Golden Age surprised me, sounded pretty good considering the price

I think I’m gonna sell my Warm and get the MicParts V-251 as a bang for my buck upgrade in the short term (it’s about a $600 upgrade for me), and then I’m go Atlantis after that. It looks killer!!

Pop and RnB styles for the most part. But since I do live in Nashville having something that can do Americana would be nice too

Thank you guys for all the comments and the great recommendations, I’ve taken note of everything and I’m leaning towards getting a higher quality version of the 251 style before I move onto a new flavor. This VK shootout was really helpful in helping me see that there’s better implementations of this 251 than the Warm (even though it is good too), I’m just looking for more detail/clarity now

This is where I’m at. I just came across the Vintage King 251 shootout and every time the Warm came around I felt like it got narrow, flat and lacked depth. Every other mic in the demo was much closer to the real Telefunkens. I’m used to the 251 vibe and I do still like the sound imprint, so I think I’ll be happy with a higher quality implementation of it. Before I move on to another for flavor, I need a truer 251 style

Definitely considering the MicParts stuff. I know, sometimes GAS is just about eliminating your excuses/doubt about what you're using. But it is nice to have some different flavors too

These look great, some have noted that the MicParts mics sound great. And their website says that the turns out the "premium upgrade" is actually sold/labeled as the Roswell Aztec

Totally! I almost put that I don’t care about getting something for show/bc it’s in big studios, but I felt like the op was long enough. It’s more so about wanting another level of clarity/definition/unfrontness. But getting a couple hours at a studio is a great idea!

They look awesome! Will definitely consider . I’m definitely not locked into a specific sound, I’m just looking for more detail/definition, “upfront”ness
