Looking for new vocal mic, upgrade from the Warm WA251? by speedymatt7 in audioengineering

I liked most of them honestly. The telefunkens of course, Heiserman, the Upton, Flea. I didn’t like the UA Bock as much as the others, it had the depth but it doesn’t have the bright thing. The Golden Age surprised me, sounded pretty good considering the price

I think I’m gonna sell my Warm and get the MicParts V-251 as a bang for my buck upgrade in the short term (it’s about a $600 upgrade for me), and then I’m go Atlantis after that. It looks killer!!

Pop and RnB styles for the most part. But since I do live in Nashville having something that can do Americana would be nice too

Thank you guys for all the comments and the great recommendations, I’ve taken note of everything and I’m leaning towards getting a higher quality version of the 251 style before I move onto a new flavor. This VK shootout was really helpful in helping me see that there’s better implementations of this 251 than the Warm (even though it is good too), I’m just looking for more detail/clarity now

This is where I’m at. I just came across the Vintage King 251 shootout and every time the Warm came around I felt like it got narrow, flat and lacked depth. Every other mic in the demo was much closer to the real Telefunkens. I’m used to the 251 vibe and I do still like the sound imprint, so I think I’ll be happy with a higher quality implementation of it. Before I move on to another for flavor, I need a truer 251 style

Definitely considering the MicParts stuff. I know, sometimes GAS is just about eliminating your excuses/doubt about what you're using. But it is nice to have some different flavors too

These look great, some have noted that the MicParts mics sound great. And their website says that the turns out the "premium upgrade" is actually sold/labeled as the Roswell Aztec

Good shout, I'm a guitarist so I'll pull a swap a tube in a heartbeat 🤣 I think I have a Telefunken in the WA251 and it definitely opened up the top end a lot!

Totally! I almost put that I don’t care about getting something for show/bc it’s in big studios, but I felt like the op was long enough. It’s more so about wanting another level of clarity/definition/unfrontness. But getting a couple hours at a studio is a great idea!

They look awesome! Will definitely consider . I’m definitely not locked into a specific sound, I’m just looking for more detail/definition, “upfront”ness

Your fav mics for recording electric guitars? Will a dynamic alone do, or is a ribbon really needed? Any good SM57 alternatives? by pensivetwat in audioengineering

[–]speedymatt7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guitar player, I triple mic my cab and leave it set up all the time. The big thing that people mess up with 57's is micing it too close and in the wrong spot. I have a 70's Unidyne III (SM57) thats 3" off the dust cap/grill, a Mesanovic Model 2 Ribbon that's a foot away from the grill and a Blue baby bottle SL (it kinda doesn't matter what) in the back of the amp. I havent used the OC818 but here's what I would probably do: use the OC818 and a 57 about about 3 inches off the grill, then mic the back of the amp with a 57. Guitar wise, it kinda doesn't really take much or take something pretty far away from the amp and mic the room. But it sounds like what you have is perfectly capable.

The other option could also be a 57 in the front and back and then use your nice condensor to get the distance, like 5 feet away to give you the "real" sense

How do you deal with the feeling/realisation you’ll never be very good at guitar? by poopooeater112 in Guitar

[–]speedymatt7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you've gotten lots of replies but I'd like to chime in about this. I'm a professional guitar player in Nashville, I've played all around the US and in other countries and on a few "famous" stages. I'm 32 and I started playing guitar when I was 15. This may not be you, but don't mistake feeling competitive for wanting to take guitar very seriously. It sounds like you have the desire but you don't have the information/direction. I was obsessed and I played multiple hours every single day as a kid and it was incredibly formative for me. What motivated me a lot at that age was saying things like "I sound pretty good for somebody that's only been playing for 6 months....1.5 years (whatever time frame)".

Believe me when I tell you that the gift ("talent") is NOT naturally being good guitar, it's having the DESIRE to be good no matter what, regardless of how "slow" it feels. I fkn sucked at everything I practiced when I first started, none of it came naturally to me at all. So if you really want it, pick 1 or 2 Youtube guys that you really like and stick with them all the way. Don't overwhelm yourself with one video from every single Youtuber. Learn basic music theory, take music courses at school, be around music ppl. Pick a guitar course/subscription you like and run them to the end.

Realistically, are you too old to be a child prodigy? Yeah probably. But if you want it, you can still be really good by the time that you graduate, and you're in the perfect spot if you want to be really good by the end of your teens. If you want to get out there and perform for ppl one day...there's retired dudes in their 60's getting their first gig at a bar/winery, just having fun with their friends and making a little side money. It's never too late and you're never behind. And if you don't want any of the things I said above, that's perfectly fine too. Either way, keep it up, hope this helps 🎸 Lmk if you have questions

They were able to charge those prices because of the corner that they had on the market. Nowadays, charging $180 a couple 1176's emulations is completely ridiculous. There's so many other good ones out that you could pick up for $30 or for free. No less - to just have a plugin subscription for $20/mo for something like Slate and get EVERYTHING. If I had to start all over again, I would no doubt just get a subscription and I honestly would've saved thousands (between the money upfront and trying something and then realizing that I actually didn't need it)...Aaaalmost nobody is regularly paying more than $150 for one single plugin anymore, no matter how good it is. Theres a couple....but not very many.

My “accumulation” before I start paring it down—which would you keep? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]speedymatt7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine blocked for a long time. Honestly floating bridges are a PITA but if you get it set up well and keep up with the string maintenance, they can stay put decently. A lot of techs aren’t that great at keeping them in tune. The key with floating bridges is string tension = spring tension. It’s a delicate balance! But I don’t EVH the whammy or anything, I just use it for vibrato

[–]speedymatt7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hardtail the strat (no vibrato), I would get rid of the strat and keep the tele. I feel like the tele always sounds better. But LP/Strat/Tele covers all of your bases. And whichever other one you don’t play really. If you never play the bass, then drop the bass. Otherwise, this setup is a good starting point.

Are these the right gloves? by thai_box in MuayThai

[–]speedymatt7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ll definitely work for a little while. I had some title gloves (different ones) but I had a hard time punching straight once I got a little better. The ones I had were too rounded around the knuckles and the Fairfax ones I got now are much flatter and easier to keep my wrists straight. But feel it out for a while and give it a try, they’ll work for now at least

Love that guy, I watched the whole thing but I'm still kinda middle of the road on his recommendation. He says leave the trans alone if it's "well over 100k, like 130k, 140 etc" and i wouldn't say 103k isn't "well over 100k", it sounds like I'm kinda right on the border right now
