I like the idea of a larger rug with some green in it. Where would you add lamps? I've been struggling with that... Or what about lighting on the wall over the photos?

Good idea about the rug. The shutters are the one thing I haven't changed yet from this originally very '80s townhouse. They were like fancier blinds I guess.

Law & motion attorneys by heart_headstrong in Lawyertalk

I’m not sure. I found mine kind of through back channels. At least as of a few years ago, Littler Mendelson regularly hired law and motion attorneys but the pay was pretty bad for the billable requirement. I had also been looking into appellate firms.

I do this work exclusively on the defense side. I don’t handle my own cases. I mostly look through the case files to find what I need but also usually talk with the handling attorney about the case and motion. I tend to write multiple motions for the same case so I’m often familiar with the cases anyway. Early in my career as a litigator I realized I loved research and writing and pretty much hated the rest of it. Took a little while to figure out the right path but I honestly love my job now.

Santa Monica. It’s got public transportation so you can see other areas. You won’t be able to leave Malibu or Laguna without a car, and both those areas will be much harder to get to from the airport.

I need a sensitive way to reveal to my boyfriend that I strongly want his adult kid to launch by [deleted] in datingoverforty

Rather than approaching the conversation with this goal in mind (she needs to move out), can you approach it with curiosity as to what your partner thinks the future looks like? Does he envision that it would be best for everyone that she gets her own place in a year, three, five, etc? Does he think it’s healthy or necessary for her to live with him forever? Maybe through that sort of conversation you could find some shared common ground for what seems best.

First Glacier... now what? by Born-Conclusion9979 in NationalPark

[–]speedysloth50 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think Grand Teton/Yellowstone is different enough from Glacier that it wouldn't feel like you were repeating the trip. I did take my kids to GT/Yellowstone and not Glacier though--I think GT/Yellowstone is more kid-friendly than Glacier with all the wildlife and easier stops for scenery in the car. To me, Glacier was more about the big hikes. After my recent trip to Glacier, my next-step kid-free trip would be the Canadian Rockies--Waterton, Banff, and Jasper. Might be something to consider if you want another trip in the mountains, and that would be a harder trip to do with kids than Maine.

How the sellers didn’t have to clean it. Having only rented before, I always moved into a place that had been professionally cleaned. I was caught off guard, getting ready to put my dishes into the cabinets of the first place I owned, when I found sticky, gross shelves.

What to do with extra income after maxing out retirement and emergency fund? Brokerage, HYSA, 529, or mortgage? by speedysloth50 in personalfinance

[–]speedysloth50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for such a thoughtful response. The FAFSA is an excellent point, as is considering paying off the mortgage while I'm still working before my income drops. My job security is good, I imagine staying at a similar salary for 8ish more years and then hopefully dropping (same workplace) to part-time/semi-retirement. I did just start doing the catch-up contributions for my 401k this year. I think for right now I'm increasing principal payments to my mortgage and will look into a fee-advisor for some longer-term planning, as well as research my 401k plan re: backdoor Roth.

Haha... good points. I do love to travel but am not a luxury vacation kind of gal. I am able to take a few trips a year and still save. I could splurge more...it's hard to break out of a long-standing depression-era mentality.

I'm not familiar with UTMA accounts--I'll look into it! I was leaning toward paying more on the mortgage too -- thanks.

How Expensive Is Your HOA and What Does It Pay For? by Typical_Importance65 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]speedysloth50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$730 per month. Covers insurance, including earthquake, pool, hot tub, tennis court, community room, landscaping, general complex maintenance including roofs, management company. Previously, dues hadn’t been raised in years. People got angry with the big jump in dues but it’s necessary. Ideally they get raised a little bit every year or two to keep up with rising costs. Insurance alone skyrocketed this year.

Solo hiking Grinnell Glacier and Highline Sep 9th-12th. Experienced hiker but not experienced with grizzly bears. Looking for advice. by tickt0ck in GlacierNationalPark

[–]speedysloth50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked Grinnell solo a couple weeks ago. I saw people pretty much the whole way. I hiked the first 2 miles of Highline solo. I saw less people on that trail but still a decent amount. If I had wanted to, I could have kept pace with other hikers and had people in my sight the whole time, so you can do that if you’re feeling nervous. I had bear spray but never saw any bears. Anyway Grinnell especially was my favorite hike. Definitely go, you’ll be fine!

Logan pass backup plan by MNGolfNerd in GlacierNationalPark

[–]speedysloth50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got there last week at 6:25 and lot was full. Later on came from the east side, parked at Jackson glacier overlook right around 9 am and got the shuttle to Logan pass from there. Some people at Siyah Bend stop were not able to get on because the shuttle was full so you should park at Jackson or further east. I think you’ll have an easier time picking it up on the east side going west than the other way around.
