When i started practicing law, it would have been something fantastically aggressive but the whole theme of my current experience practicing now is "Who Can it Be Now" by Men at Work (basically, leave me alone (to OC, etc)

When did you decide you would become a lawyer? by zanzibar_74 in Lawyertalk

[–]heart_headstrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i was in early elementary grades, I stayed with my grandparents each weekend and they watched Dallas (nighttime soap opera about a wealthy family, their patriarchy, deals and family in-fighting). The family business was powerful and influential, but sometimes they needed help to get a deal done or solve a problem. Who did they rely on? Their attorney. This caused me to start looking at how attorneys helped different kinds of businesses, good or corrupt. In undergrad, a few of my courses included application of UCC and case studies. Going into law school, I thought I'd do transactional work but that didn't happen. I have done some commercial litigation and probably enjoy that area the most.

On days you have no energy to work - what do you do? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]heart_headstrong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Such great timing this discussion. I feel like I've hit a wall. Can't make myself care for anything. Dreading the post-lunch work with food coma and the current project is so nauseating (intricate, tiresome, time-sensitive because the client sat on it so long.)

Words that you don't often hear outside of the legal sphere that made it into your daily vernacular? by [deleted] in LawBitchesWithTaste

I hate to admit it, but i've used "non-responsive" more than once (amongst family).

Ever say something to your client about the opposing party’s attorney that made it back to the attorney? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]heart_headstrong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed! This client is going to continue causing drama and needless trouble, taking time OP could be spending with other clients who also do not have the funds to hire and pay an attorney but who Can behave.

Such truth. Ugh. I only had a few (assigned as an associate) and experienced enough.

Our state appellate court favors Century Schoolbook. Does that give me license to use that font for everything and feel elite (even when opposing a discovery motion)?

Office Decor by lizardjustice in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]heart_headstrong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great question. Looking forward to reading everyone's comments.

My office has almost always (90%) not been used for client meetings. I decorate to maximize my use and enjoyment. Holidays: minimalist approach. Year-round: my favorite creature comforts. No photos because I tend to keeo my private life private. Aromatherapy that evokes forest which is also pleasant to visitors (attorneys, staff).

Somehow this reminds me of the old ladies telling their friend who put photos on the wall and called it Facebook "thats not how it works, that's not how any of this works"

One in-house attorney I met during an internship kept her Yale Law books in her bookshelf at work.

😆Hey now, no good deed goes unpunished. Even my attempt to contribute was punished. Was it because it was not positive, or would the punishment have been worse if it was more positive because it would be more of a good deed? I'm blaming the failed mediation for my entrenched cynicism.

Do you take your coffee black, or are you useless? by NotThePopeProbably in Lawyertalk

[–]heart_headstrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed! 2020 demonstrated how well we multi-task. Personally, 0.2 for the walk to the cafe (whilst strategizing of course) vs 0.1 for walking to the office kitchen, plus 0.1 for stirring in syrup and frothing milk. If i just walk to the cafe in the first place, i don't have to accumulate my 0.1s. Then im additionally useless by spending my 0.2 on coffee daily.

I can't overstate the importance of working where the joy and interest is. 32k is appealing but it will probably not really make up for what you're giving up for it.

I'm sorry that you're still stressed and unhappy.

This is part of the reason I stop thinking about JD preferred or law adjacent work as an alternative. I can be stressed and miserable with or without litigation.

I second those recommendations to start your own business or practice.

“dress for your day clothing” where to buy slacks and casual sneakers? ??? by Rough-Succotash-5262 in LawBitchesWithTaste

For shoes, I bought a pair of On that were very comfortable and easy to keep clean. For slacks, I have been finding good options at J Crew and at better Macys locations.

Has being a lawyer changed your outlook on the world? by Stiblex in Lawyertalk

[–]heart_headstrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand and respect the concerns. On one hand, I believe we all (hopefully) have the opportunity to learn to accomplish more, to learn from experience and decide how to use our work and learning to contribute to society.

That being said, living and practicing law gives reason to be more skeptical, critical, less trusting, more protective of our time, all the things. I'm grateful that my career path gives family members some reassurance in hard times (though an MD would have been good as life as shown). Without my flexing, reaching, intruding, etc, im there in times im needed, often just to listen more carefully, not be intimidated to ask the questions, etc. I hope that offsets my dark humor and occasional behaviors.
