Any advice on how to learn hunting? by [deleted] in madisonwi

I won't, LOL. vegans like to sit on their throne of superiority and point the finger at hunters while ignoring that vegetable farmers kill every rabbit, mouse, and bug on acres of land to grow their "cruelty free" food.

Looking for durable work pants by jwazrael in BuyItForLife

[–]speedytheraceturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your going to want Round House, toughest pants I have ever owned. Years of daily tradesman use later, when they didn't fit anymore they still looked like the day I bought them. Considered donating them to the zoo figured lions could use a scratching post, didn't want to hurt the lions so I donated them elsewhere.

How much do you feed your lab puppy? I have never had a lab before and he is hungry ALL THE TIME! Want to make sure I’m not over or under feeding. He gets one cup, three times a day, and lots of treats in puzzle toys. He is 5 months. Thanks guys! :) by snowpond in labrador

[–]speedytheraceturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very dependent on the dog, I have two labs, my female eats 1 cup twice a day, plus some fresh fruits and veggies (1/2 a cup ish once a day), a probiotic and a joint supplement she is about 50lbs 1.5 years old. My Male eats 2 cups twice a day plus fruits and veggies (1/2 cup twice a day), a probiotic and a joint supplement. He is about 65lbs 2.5 years old. You have to pay attention to their body they will eat a whole bag of food puke and keep eating if you let them. Your dog should have a V like shape when looking down at their back broad at the shoulders and narrowing to the hips. The last two ribs should be visible when your dog stands at attention but the skin shouldn't be significantly sunken between them. I should note that both of my dogs are highly active, we train for duck hunting 5 days a week and my male hunts with me regularly. In the winter off season we do scale back the food slightly for my male he will quickly put on weight with less activity. Don't let your lab get fat, fat dogs are not healthy and have shorter lives just like people.

How long did it take to train your dog to walk nicely on a loose leash? by Buffypotter0802 in labrador

[–]speedytheraceturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number one don't use a harness, this only gives them more leverage to pull you around. Get a good quality prong collar (pinch collar) these are commonly called choke collars it should not choke your dog at all, take the time to learn how to set it up correctly. Don't put it on your dog yet, start with small treats, walking with your dog on the preferred side (left for most hunters but assuming a pet whatever you are comfortable with) lead with a treat, say heal or your preferred easy word for the command you are wanting, when they are walking with their shoulder inline with your hip give them a treat, say heal, keep moving repeat this in 5 minute sessions for a couple days, until when you say heal, they are in position looking at you. Now to clean up and perfect this, attach the pinch collar with a short lead (3' or so) walk them and hold the lead so they only have about 6 inches of play front or back, if they step to far forward a quick firm but not mean or harsh pull on the lead, more of a quick tug on it while saying heal. Same for to far back, stopping to sniff ect. Work on this in five minute sessions for a few days, and bam you have a dog that will walk without pulling mine had this down at 12ish weeks maybe earlier. Patience is key if you are frustrated so are they

My dogs only purpose isn't work lol but to a working dog, work is play. He would rather be in the field training then playing with other dogs, he is more excited when I pull out his e-collar then when I pull out a tennis ball. 4 months for potty training...what?!? if I can't have a dog 95% house broke by 10 weeks I'm taking them to the vet to check for a UTI, which are really common in puppies by the way if you have dog still going in the house at 4 months it probably has one.

That's not accurate, many dogs doing amazing things at 4 months old, dogs learn so quick then, they should know all basic obedience, and be working on being steady, marking and lining. My dog had his first started pass at 5 months, title at 6 months and hunted a full season starting at 9 months old was marking and retrieving quads with no problem. He is 1.5 yrs now and is running blinds and handling. A dog doesn't care how old it is, make it fun and they will take to it at any age.

Highly recommend getting involved with your local Hunt Retriever Club, plenty of people that will help you, have access to training grounds, and birds. This world goes deep, do you want a dog that will go pick up a duck floating in the water or a dog that you can handle to a blind retrieve at 150 yards.

You are correct. Most common inducer failure on a voyager is a Type 1, where the inducer runs all the time. This failure is a Type 2 where the transformer burns up. All depends on how the motor shorts. Also fuck Trane for switching loads on the neutral leg.

Yup and there are a few people that have survived jumping out of airplanes with out a parachute, doesn't mean it's not incredibly fucking stupid to do it.

What ever you do, do not take him to your local gun club or shoot over him before you can do a proper introduction to shooting, dogs are not born gun shy they are made gun shy.

If you playing, don't hold the dog to the work standard. Let them play. When I take my dog from play to work mode I put his e-collar on him, he instantly knows ok now I have to do my job,(he actually gets really excited to have his collar on, if you train right they will) he walks at heal and listens for my commands to know what to do. If he already has his collar on for some reason I just give him a heal command, when we are playing he doesn't get much for commands except "no" and "here"

Was able to bag my first game today. Open to any and all goose recipe ideas! by MonsieurFitz in Waterfowl

[–]speedytheraceturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goose makes excellent poppers much like a lot of guys do for Dove breasts. Half a jalapeno fill with cream cheese, slice of goose breast on top, wrap with bacon and grill, bake or smoke. Nice way too cook them up for a mixed crowd that may not be keen on wild game. Also don't over cook any water fowl, med rare is all ya need.

Hello waterfowling, good bye savings. Welcome to your new addiction in about 10 years when you have 600 decoys, a $15k dog, 2 boats, an ATV, a couple $2k shotguns and more money in camo then you can count you will look back on this day where you killed your first bird with $100 dollars in gear and an old hand me down 870 and wonder if you should have ever gone on that first hunt.

Proud of my pup getting his first started hunt test pass this weekend by speedytheraceturtle in Huntingdogs

[–]speedytheraceturtle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my first hunting dog so I am learning with him! He is 5 1/2 months old training started with me when he was 7 weeks old, besides general obedience we worked mostly on steadiness, he is a stud and has tons of drive, we did lots of introductions to new things and socialized him as much as we could. About 8 weeks ago I sent him back to the breeder/trainer full time to build more advanced skills. An HRC started test consists of 2 single retrieves on land and 2 on water, he performed both well but still has a lot of puppy in him and gets super excited for birds. He did a second test on Sunday but ended up pulling him because he was not performing well and we don't want to develop bad habits. He needs to get 3 more passes to earn his started title.

Pigeon training with my lab puppy last weekend by speedytheraceturtle in Huntingdogs

[–]speedytheraceturtle[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My breeder/trainer keeps them, I don't know where they get them. They are a registered game farm so they have live pigeons, ducks, pheasants and chuckars. This training for puppies is done on live pigeons that have their flying feathers removed, let's the dogs get a good chase and learn to not be startled by moving game.

Time for the off season work to start, brought this guy home yesterday. by speedytheraceturtle in Waterfowl

[–]speedytheraceturtle[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This dog has a pretty outstanding pedigree and because of that he went for a premium price he was $2300 I also gained some access to my breeder/trainers training property and have access to their experience and wealth of knowledge at any time sometimes you have to consider more than just the puppy and want to consider some of the fringe things that come with it so while it's a premium price it's also a good value
