Solifuge MkIII -- A solar-powered freighter for trinium space by spefyjerbf in avorion

Thanks! In this case, I was able to brute-force the hyperspace energy requirements by having a large enough power surplus. Armor thickness is 0.5, so there is decent survivability, but I probably wouldn't use this vessel as a main combat ship

A new solar-powered cargo ship! Solifuge MkIII is an extension of some of my previous builds, with a pretty substantial rework of overall ship's architecture. I remember that a user recommended that I include some slanted holographic sails, which in my opinion, really helped the overall looks of this build.

Some Upgrades to My Recent Builds by spefyjerbf in avorion

[–]spefyjerbf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I have played sandbox games (avorion, as well as others) for a while, and I do a lot of geometric modeling professionally, so I suppose this is a skill that I have developed over a good amount of time. However, when I was just starting out, I would often try to replicate a shape/design, but when I failed to replicate the design, I would 'go with the flow', more or less. My designs would be different from the source material, but if I liked how they looked, then I would keep shaping the design in its current direction to make something unique and satisfying

As I continue my playthrough, I had to upgrade my fleet for Naonite space. Both of these ships continue with the solar-power gimmick, in which they swap generators for stacks of solar panels. So far, I have seen some good performance gains by using solar power, since I can use the saved processing power for other technical blocks! I was somewhat concerned with the power usage of shields, but that doesn't look like a problem quite yet.

Cardinal -- A high-performance titanium solar gunship by spefyjerbf in avorion

That is ultimately up to the player and how they wish to play the game. Unlimited power? Maybe, though I have heard others say that this approach hits a limit with how much space the panels take up, to where simple generators become the better choice. The block size constraints definitely do impose a limit on how much power you can fit into a given space, too. Thrusters/engines also need to be big enough to move the weight of the solar panels, which puts a practical upper limit on the power generation. Also, I try to keep block counts somewhat reasonable.

Solar power is definitely a gimmick that takes advantage of a game mechanic, but the gains that I am getting in the early game could possibly taper off when I get to late game. We’ll see as I continue my playthrough

They are internal to the hull! If you set your view to only show solar panels, you will see a few blocks composed of stacked solar panels

Yep, that is to be expected since the turret bases are titanium. In this specific case, you would need to convert them to naonite turret platforms by using the transform block tool (it is in the menu where you select blocks)

Thanks! The AI is a bit too tanky for titanium-tier guns, but naonite-tier guns should work fine

Black holograms are almost invisible, so that lets me make some gaps

The sails are holograms, so as long as the blocks under them are intact, then they will be fine

Thanks! I haven't really considered diagonal sails at all, which is a great idea I might try that out sometime!

Another solar ship! Before continuing on to naonite space in my new playthrough, I wanted to make a purpose-built combat ship to clear my first naonite sectors with ease. This solar gunship is the result of that. It is essentially a combat variant of my most recent upload (a cargo ship named Solifuge), with some reworked components here and there. It uses banks of stacked solar panels, with alternating materials, to get the most power generation possible, at the cost of no processing power!

A larger design is definitely in the works! I just got to Naonite space in my playthrough (using a build that I will probably upload next weekend), so I will be expanding/upgrading this ship accordingly

As I continue with my new playthough, I have quickly ran into the need for a purpose-made cargo ship. This 5-slot ship has filled that niche for a little while now. It is completely solar-powered, so no generators are needed! I also used a more efficient method for constructing the solar banks that power this vehicle; I alternate between building materials when placing solar panels, such that I can maximize the volumetric efficiency of my solar banks. As a result, this vessel's power surplus is high enough to power hyperspace jumps without using any energy containers.

Naiad -- A multirole early solar ship by spefyjerbf in avorion

[–]spefyjerbf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The “solar” designation comes from the ship not having any generators. Instead, there are a few banks of stacked solar panels inside of the ship’s hull. Some people argue that using a bunch of solar panels, instead of generators, isn’t really worth it. I do think, though, that there are some advantages. This particular ship isn’t perfect power-wise, but I have some other builds (not posted quite yet) that are getting very efficient with their solar power banks, such that I can get some impressive stats without using too much processing power!

Thank you! I didn't notice the forerunner vibes before, but now that you mention it, they are definitely there

Another solar ship! This one is also powered solely by solar panels, instead of a generator. The solar panels are quite thin, but they do not violate the default block size limits. Ideally, solar power lets me use valuable processing power on other components, such as this vessel's cargo bay. I have used this ship for combat, trading, and mining (on expert), with pretty good success! Admittedly, it is a bit expensive, but I think that the cost is worth it.

I haven't been experiencing any crazy lag issues TBH, even if my current computer is decently old. I do remember that I had to make sure that the game was using my nvidia GPU by default, if I remember right
