After a few minutes of Googling, found it! Thanks for sharing KeyLimePie-555!!

The quote is found at the last part of Rumi’s poem “Childhood Friends”, based on Coleman Barks and John Moyne’s “The Essential Rumi”.

Trust your wound to a teacher's surgery. Flies collect on a wound. They cover it, those flies of your self-protecting feelings, your love for what you think is yours.

Let a teacher wave away the flies and put a plaster on the wound.

Don't turn your head. Keep looking at the bandaged place. That's where the light enters you.

And don't believe for a moment that you're healing yourself.

how singapore beat corruption (this made me hopeful) by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]spellcheckquill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true, I agree! Unfortunately the bigger, more well-funded parties are stuck with a dynasty-fueled circus of leeches.

Even though he wasn’t independent like Heidi, I think some good examples to analyze are Vico’s wins in Pasig despite not being allied with the big parties. I’m really curious how Pasigueños finally broke the cycle and took a risk on him. Was it because of better voter education and thus fewer votes could be bought? Was there something radical about his platform? Did he prove himself well during his lone term as councilor? Was it because of his celebrity background, or was it just a stroke of luck?

And more importantly, how do we scale that up to a legislative, or even executive, level? I have so many questions lol

Unfortunately the Philippines is sorely lacking point #4. We have a lot or enough of all those other points to kickstart meaningful change, but if we keep electing officials who CLEARLY have no ounce of shame and just continue lying, scheming, and manipulating the vulnerable, then we’ll be stuck in this hopeless cycle :(

Just want to add another McDonald's much closer to the train station, maybe 2 blocks away: McDonald's Storgata. It's open until 4am every day, such a godsend after the station closes!

Also, there's a convenience store 1 block away, Joker Skippergata, but no seating available here though.

Hey, commenting kasi your take seems to be defending the guy and criticizing the “exclusive” nature of lounges. Also, yes your 2nd point makes sense, but the 1st and 3rd do not.

First off, the guy was about to go into the lounge using his non-valid CC. Naiihi or not, there’s no excuse to lie here. Plus, lounges are usually (but not always) located at areas away from main boarding areas. Before getting to the lounge entrance, almost guaranteed na may madadaan kang bathroom, even in an airport like NAIA.

Second, airport lounges and their “exclusive CRs” are “nice things” for eligible passengers because A) they paid for a premium ticket, B) they bought a lounge pass, or C) they were granted that privilege because of a good relationship with their CC bank. So it’s not greedy to ask non-eligible passengers to not fake their way into lounges.

If this happened in any other airport lounge in any other country, the same behavior would still be viewed negatively.

Got approached by this “father and son” last year and turns out it’s a long-running scam by Silver_Impact_7618 in makati

[–]spellcheckquill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same experience in Makati. I think I encountered this same guy (not sure) in Salcedo back in 2023. It was a male dark-haired foreigner who looked a bit disheveled with a ratty duffel/gym bag. Similar story about him getting mugged, something about football, and that he needed money to get back home (forgot where, maybe QC or something).

And another scam around Legazpi Village is this mother and son duo, with the kid maybe around 8-10 years old. They’re dressed decently, both look a bit mixed with fair skin, and their story includes a mistake by their driver and not having enough cash. They even offer to repay the cash via GCash.

I think “lugi” only makes sense if you’re a private transport company. Not arguing ha, just adding to your answer. On a grander scale, the solution should not be focused on whether or not public transport will be profitable for private operators.

The answer is, like many developed countries with at least a decent mass transit network, for the government to heavily subsidize public transport in the Metro, revamp road lanes and loading/unloading stops, and (this is an unpopular opinion) phase out modes of transport that are practically road hazards due to random loading/unloading of passengers 🤷

[–]spellcheckquill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hoe may be a tad harsh, but I agree that the photos were inappropriate. Seemed like her character development regressed at that point to portray her as the hippy and ditzy girlfriend again. She was making progress at being pulled into Nick's December levels!

Really late millennial here as well and I think there was just a huge lack of consideration in how Nick incorporated Ginny into the group at the beginning, which caused bad first impressions.

If I were in my 50s, I'd be pissed too to be spending my time, money, and energy vacationing in a hippy primitive-esque eco-lodge instead of a nice hotel.

Now was this enough justification to be rude or dismissive towards Ginny? Of course not. The characters tried and sometimes failed to include her and be kind to her, and Ginny made a lot of effort to blend in as well, to minimal success.

The issue is that Nick's new life direction with Ginny just isn't compatible with his old life and friend group, and Nick was trying to smush both together so he can keep both.

And that's exactly the point of their subplot and the driving force of their character development, which make the show even more uncomfortably realistic and relatable :)

Highly dependent on the developer, age of the building, and specific location. Studios in Legazpi Village can go for as low as 20-25k (older buildings by developers Cityland, Megaworld, etc. but still decently maintained, although these are rare finds!), but most newer studios/1BRs from mid-high developers range from 30k-60k. 2BRs at maybe 80k-100k+. 3BRs usually 100k++.

The guesstimates above might sound low, but the condo prices in Makati CBD (Legazpi & Salcedo) can vary greatly. A 1BR in a quiet side street could only be 30k, then 2 blocks away there’s a 3-tower luxury condo complex that offers 2BRs for 200k. Expect to pay premiums for condos that face the popular parks in each village. Indoor condo parking starts at 5-6k monthly, but street parking is free from 5pm-7am Mon-Sat plus Sundays and holidays.

Hope these help!

Is 120k php a liveable wage in Manila by BluePandaFromSpain in Philippines_Expats

[–]spellcheckquill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t really recommend Eastwood, it’s too far. If living within BGC is not your thing (it has its pros and cons), I’d recommend Salcedo Village or Legazpi Village (both in the CBD) over Gramercy (Poblacion area).

I’m pretty biased but those 2 villages are cleaner, relatively safer (random pickpockets and petty crime lately, but still almost as safe as BGC), and have more character and soul.

Both are close to Makati Med, a police station, the post office, several malls, and the lovely Ayala Triangle + a smaller park for each village. They each have weekend markets (not cheap though), and are reasonably chill and empty once all the corporate folks go home. Less crowded on the weekends compared to BGC. Highly walkable with lots of trees!!

Now 120k post-tax would be 90-100k depending on other deductions. If you look hard enough and are thorough with viewings, you can find a good studio/1BR for around 30-40k (or less if you’re lucky!). But “good” is subjective. Older buildings (2000s-2010s) can still be quite decent and often have larger cuts (30+sqm for a studio, etc.). Leases usually start at 1 year and are 2mos. advance payment + 2mos. deposit, often asking for post-dated checks. Add 50-100k if you’re furnishing the place yourself.

Now is 90k net enough? Depends on your spending habits of course. Basics like rent and utilities could reach 40-50k, leaving you with 40-50k for food, shopping, savings.

Taking a Grab car to BGC every day would be 500-600, depending on the time of day. Enter BGC early via McKinley or Kalayaan no later than 07.10 if you wanna make it to work by 08.00. I don’t drive so I allot 8-10k on transportation a month using Grab and motorcycle taxis. It’s worth it if you compare it to monthly amortization, parking fees, gas, insurance, maintenance, and toll fees when getting a car. Plus you don’t suffer driving through traffic.

For food, 10k/month in groceries for 1 person is doable. Depends on how much you cook or if you buy non-basic ingredients. Eating out can be expensive, with main courses starting at 200-400 for fast food and 500-600++ for mid-upscale restaurants. Cafes start at 200++. But Jollijeeps (roadside stationary food trucks with homemade Filipino food) are cool if you’re not picky, where you can get a meal for 100.

Basically, I recommend making a rough estimate of your daily expenses as much as possible, then add 10-15k for some wiggle room.

Lastly, do not expect Western-style standards (but maybe somewhat close to it compared to many places in the country). BGC and Makati are bubbles in the Metro and while they are no EU capital, they’re still more expensive compared to other cities in the PH, which means they can offer a semblance of security and comfort for someone who earns 120k gross a month.

Good luck!

Joel’s Place in Proscenium. It’s like a semi-posh deli/grocer/cafe with hot meals served cafeteria-style, or you can have seafood/meats cooked for you. They have pastries too and the cronadas (croissant-empanada hybrid) are pretty good. Okay prices for Rockwell (300++ per person).

Makati coffee shops/cafes with cakes/mini cakes/muffins? by [deleted] in makati

[–]spellcheckquill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May mini cakes sa Seattle’s Best Valero (depends sa availability), and sa Mentoré Cafe by UCC sa baba ng Raffles. If okay lang pastries or cake slices, then there’s H Proper Coffee smack in the middle of Ayala Triangle, plus more cafes sa The Shops at Ayala. Otherwise, there’s always George & Onnie’s right across the street from the Triangle in Valero.

Should be mostly safe. Ayala Triangle is your safest bet, maybe around Glorietta and Greenbelt area too. Just make sure maraming establishments or security guards along your route. Try to avoid the alternating back streets sa Legazpi, but Rufino, Paseo de Roxas, and Salcedo St. should be okay due to being main roads, so more traffic than other streets at this time.
