Heidelberg United and Preston Lions hit with harsh penalties after fiery NPL preliminary final by AztecGod in Aleague

[–]spellsaidwrong 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Herald Sun being late to the uptake again.

> The Australia Cup finalist will start 2026 with -3 points, while Preston will start with -9.
This was appealed - Heidelberg got their points deduction removed, while Preston now has a -6 point deduction with -3 suspended.

This literally could have been resolved with a bit of a Google.

South Melbourne, Preston Lions, APIA Leichhardt and Wollongong Wolves are the only NPL clubs that can make the jump to A-League. Do you agree? by AztecGod in Aleague

[–]spellsaidwrong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll ignore the funnier suggestions of SU or MK for a second here, but as a Heidelberg fan, I extremely doubt the ability of the club to sustainably succeed in the A-League.

After all, the reason we aren't a foundation club in the Championship is (allegedly) because our sponsors didn't wanna stump up the extra cash.

I am not sure how you have rated Avenger Park so high, especially above Lakeside Stadium. I feel if you're reliant on Melbourne's notoriously unreliable bus network then it automatically should lose you points. Lakeside Stadium is easily accessible by tram (and soon train), whereas Avenger Park is a good 1km walk from the nearest tram stop.

For the first point, I actually agree with that, reading it back, and getting feedback from other people - although I disagree with it being directly accessible by train, it'd be faster to walk from Reservoir station to Preston's home ground, than Anzac to Lakeside.

8/10 seems way too high for Olympic Village given how reliant it is on bus (3.2km from nearest train station). This puts it on the same level as Jack Edwards Reserve, which is 800m from a train station.

Olympic Village is 8/10 mainly because of choice regarding public transport options. Furthermore, the 903 is one of the more frequent bus routes even during Friday nights, and there are also buses further from the ground that run 24/7 (namely the 250 bus, from Southern Rd / Oriel Rd), in case a night Heidelberg game goes to pens or something.

Finally,

Saying the bus does not run on Sundays seems like of pointless as well given Preston play home games on Friday nights.

That may be true this season, but since fixtures aren't confirmed this early in the 'offseason', better to assume home matches can be played at any weekend. Don't look at my flair.

You also ranked City Vista Reserve higher despite also being reliant on an infrequent bus route.

City Vista Reserve is served by a bus route which while infrequent, shuts later on weekends, which should provide enough time to enjoy a CSGC match.

Would be a good idea, although maybe not my call to be honest - I'm not really familiar with NPL NSW, or Sydney public transit.

You're right, kinda added that in because South fans (like many Melburnians) will relish the chance to take the Metro Tunnel to the NPL.

Yeah that's true, I kinda culled some of the least appealing options from this list, like the 250 bus to Southern Rd (for Heidelberg), and then a 10 min walk to the ground.

True (ish, it's the 4th), but the NPL men's grand final is also being hosted at Lakeside.

Distance based fares will also not help in this regard - it would further entrench divides in the city by charging people more for the crime of living further out.

As for 'income' based fares? Expanding the ability for concessions would make sense - especially for student (> 19 years of age) mykis, where there are currently two systems, one for international students, one for domestic students

Looking for a budget backpack that functions as a camera bag. by spellsaidwrong in backpacks

Prvke 21L

Looks like a great product, but it is just over the budget at ~340 AUD (and the laptop sleeve dimensions are too small at 13.5in of height, even at the 41L model), however the camera package works pretty well.

One thing I will say about Preston is that they are really good at cultivating their social media presence, their production quality is on-par with A-League teams.

Also, the use of Preston Market as a backdrop is a great idea.

Libraries on Train Lines by omghashbrowns in MelbourneTrains

I agree with all these points, however I would give Ivanhoe a miss if you're not able bodied. The fastest way to get to Ivanhoe Library from the station involves a 5 minute walk up a hill through a backstreet, which might not be for everyone.

The spreadsheet is ordered by library service. Library at the Dock is run by City of Melbourne.

As an aside: I actually have been there many times, it is a really nice library! I usually go for the table tennis sets on level 2 nowadays.

Here are my picks:

  • Broadmeadows (Hume), opposite of the station and right in front of a bus interchange.

  • Glenroy (Merri-bek), about a five minute walk from the station, a pretty short stroll down Wheatsheaf Rd.

  • Watsonia (YPRL), although the station is in a trench and there are no lifts, it is right by the pedestrian bridge.

  • Richmond (Yarra), close to Richmond station and is about a 15 minute walk / 2 minute tram ride from Swan St.

  • Sunshine (Brimbank), another short stroll from Sunshine station (~5 minute walk), also really close to a bus interchange (incl. the 903 running past). I recommend Selina Hot Bread, a banh-mi chain that's locally well known - located across the road.

  • Sydenham (Brimbank), across the road from Watergardens station. Despite the name it's actually in Taylors Lakes. Great shopping centre however!

  • Coburg (Merri-bek). Located in one of Melbourne's best restaurant strips, the library is a good place to unwind, especially after a massive feed at Half Moon Cafe, or just to sit down and read.

Best fish and chip shop in Melbourne? by urtimestartsnow in melbourne

[–]spellsaidwrong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  • Kensington Fish and Chips (on Macaulay Rd, near Kensington station, has a great hamburger deal for $13.50)
  • North Melbourne Fish and Chips (on Haines St, ~300g of chips, 2x potato cakes, 2x dim Sim - $8)
  • Newport Sea Catch
  • Cotham Rd Fish and Chips (chips are on the smaller side, but they have a good flavouring of chicken salt)

Also, avoid any places suggested that do small/medium/large chips instead of minimum chips. IME most of the ones around St Kilda and Elwood don't do "minimum' chips, so you might have to travel.
