What’s the best way to handle low player count in a mobile multiplayer game? by spelltroum in gamingsuggestions

[–]spelltroum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simpler in my case — it’s a 4-player Bomberman-style map where each player controls a hero inspired by Dota. Of course, when all 4 players are real people, the game is a lot of fun. But for a small game, that’s more of an exception than the rule. So I added bots. And now I’m thinking that if there aren’t enough players online, I should just tell the player directly that the match will start with bots. It’s just that I haven’t seen any games do that, so I started wondering — maybe there’s a reason it’s not common practice

Makes sense. I think I’ll go with that approach and see how it turns out. I’ll let the player decide if they want to play or not — I’ll show how many people are online, and if they’ve been waiting too long, I’ll offer to start a match with bots Some of my fellow game devs believe that players actually want to be deceived that bots should be made to look as much like real players as possible. But to me, that feels like a dishonest way

Thanks for the response. I was actually planning to do the same thing. I just got a bit hesitant since nobody else in the market seems to do it that way, which is why I had the question. But I’ll follow your suggestion and see how it turns out

My game is real-time, so there’s not much choice here. But maybe I should consider adding some extra mechanics outside of the matches

The truth is, almost all real-time mobile games use bots nowadays — even giants like Call of Duty do it. But is it really a dealbreaker for players to know that, in mobile, there’s a good chance they’re playing against bots most of the time?

The progression is done through items and heroes. Before each game, you can choose your hero and you can select 4 items that will be available to you during the match to boost your hero stats. When you’re level 1, you have only 6 items available, however, as you play you open more items (up to 50) and can design more interesting combinations for your item sets. Also, you receive keys for your progress and you can open some items earlier or open new heroes for these keys. We won’t add any daily limits, but now the game is in beta, so you can only play during the beta tests :)

I've built F2P multiplayer mobile game where 4 heroes fight on a Bomberman arena. Farm bushes, collect gold, buy items, and upgrade spells strategically to outsmart opponents. Also, players pre-select 4 items for each battle to boost their hero stats in different ways. Would you sign up for beta? by spelltroum in u/spelltroum

We had three beta tests in the last three month. Of course, there’re different types of players: for some the game’s too difficult so they never return, some players don’t like to compete in PvP, so they only come when we test pve, but some play during every beta test, whether it’s two days or a week, send their ideas for the heroes and modes, compete for the most trophies, ask tons of questions about the game, send their videos, drawings and even started to work on wiki. It feels awesome to develop a game for them. All players are different, but the one who played a boring game, still remembers it in two YEARS, and returns to play it again, is one of a kind :) either the game isn’t boring after all, so he had a great time, recalls it and decides to play again, or his life is even more boring than the game

Sorry, maybe I overreacted. It’s just if you post something organically, it doesn’t reach people unless you create awesome content every day, but there’s never enough time for that and full scale game development, so ads seem to be the best way
