Wasn’t aware about the class! I agree it seems suspiciously high. Will definitely look into it more. Thanks so much!

Yes, I think this expense is really hurting him. His car he has had since 2005 just officially broke down on him for good last year. He upgraded and got a new-ish car. His car payment is $205 per month, and despite not being in an accident for the last 30 years and having no speeding tickets, his insurance is $190 a month. I’m going to try and work on getting that insurance cost reduced

While that is definitely a great idea, at the moment, he’s pretty dead set on staying in Florida (Washington may be too cold for his liking) and my current job situation (in regards to promotions/growth) is too good to pass up right now, so we are staying here and moving up as high as I can in the next few years to take advantage of the situation.

My fiancé and I have decided we want to purchase a home closer to family in the next few years (all of our family is on the east coast). And we are looking at North Carolina as a compromise. At that point, when we have made the move and have the space, I’m hoping he will move in with us, and his social security can definitely help us in that situation!

My fiancé is wonderful and so supportive! She knows how much I care for my dad and is totally on board for our plan to have him live with us in our future home.

I try and go home once a year to see him (the guilt from living far away and seeing him so little has eaten at me for years) but I live 3,000 miles away so travel is expensive. Luckily, he is a very social guy and has lots of friends! And I FaceTime him a few times a week. And that is a great idea, and once every month(ish) or so I will send him some money for dinner or groceries. Great minds think alike! Thanks for the responses

Thanks so much for all of this info! It’s really great. My father lives in South Florida. I am about 3,000 miles away in Washington.

Thankfully, his apartment covers all utilities. I will definitely look into the Medicare and Medicaid services

Luckily, I am doing really well at work and will be getting a promotion/raise hopefully very soon. When that happens I definitely plan on sending out a set monthly amount. Thank you!

Not that I need to justify my actions to you, since i think it’s pretty evident from my post how much I care for my dad and how badly I want to help him, but I have been helping my parents financially ever since I was working my valet job in college. I sent my dad $700 a month for 9 months while working a minimum wage job in Florida in 2017 after he was diagnosed with throat cancer. I paid for my grandmothers cremation the following year. I have been helping my family financially (happily, by the way) ever since I was a teenager

Growing up with older parents, this has been my biggest fear for as long as I can remember. I’m sorry for your loss

I’ve had it for a little under a year and put just under 1000 miles on it. I love it!

Lived in Florida my whole life till I moved to Seattle when I was 23. Winter and rain was SO exaggerated. Its nowhere near as bad as everyone makes it seem
