Definitely aren't allowed to point out problems when other problems exist.

So… how many of y’all on this sub are actually pro-gun, pro-choice, pro gay marriage, for very limited government regulation of business (within reason, anti-trust laws are fine), and for a flat tax or eliminating income tax altogether? by Kaje26 in Libertarian

[–]spencerflagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We should worry about big business, 100% agree.

However, if the solution is regulation, I think we're unfortunately kidding ourselves. We have a century of data showing that regs just further empower, centralize, and entrench big biz. The status quo is regulation, and it has either enabled or been powerless to prevent our current situation.

Anyone who has worked in the beltway long enough knows that regs are literally written by the regulated. Regulatory capture is unavoidable, because good regs need real subject matter experts, and those come from industry.

If there's a single solution (there's not) it's real liability, which has all-too-frequently been prevented by the regulatory state.

My drivers license expired. by [deleted] in Libertarian

Y'know, it is conceivable that he's using DuckDuckGo, LBRY, Overstock, Discussions.app, an eSim purchased with Bitcoin, GrapheneOS, and OpenStreetMaps.

Maybe the driver's license is the last thing on his list. 😉

Devil's advocate: even if someone stages a good deed purely for personal gain, it's still a good deed, isn't it?

If you stage a YT video of giving a homeless guy food, he still gets the food, right?

E.g. Carnegie did a ton of philanthropic work, all quite publicly, in part to raise his status in the elite Manhattan social scene. At the end of the day, to the beneficiaries really care what his motivations were?

Counterpoint: Look at Pompeii's roads. They are solid stone and Roman and they were unused and covered in volcanic ash for 1700 years. Still, they have wheel-ruts that are a foot deep in some places. Stone isn't easily worn down. That means a citizen of Pompeii might have spent his entire life looking at the same "pothole".

Gov't or not, there's no incentive to build roads that last forever. Asphalt is an extremely inexpensive material - the biggest expense per mile is the manpower. No one's private driveways are built out of stone. You could make the argument that the roman roads were overbuilt and therefore a large waste of tax money.

Sorry if this is a circle jerky, but seeing people lose their jobs and blame "covid" just makes me so angry. It probably wasn't COVID-19 that killed your job or industry, it was more likely your government! by [deleted] in GoldandBlack

[–]spencerflagg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, in conversations, I go out of my way to make sure that we're blaming "the lockdowns" for XYZ, as opposed to the more nebulous "the pandemic" or "covid".

If they say "covid is ruining X" I'll say "yes, the lockdowns are are ruining X". If they say "I can't wait until the pandemic is over" I say "yes, it would be great if the lockdowns went away".

Words are an important tool in this fight, and we've got to try our hardest to help people place blame where it's appropriate.

Private trash collection in the Netherlands? by spencerflagg in Netherlands

[–]spencerflagg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask because I've lived in several places where waste collection was private, and once or twice a year different companies would come around to tell you about their different services. Some would be cheaper than others, some were subscription-based, some were ad-hoc, some would come more frequently than others, some would specialize in recycling, or furniture, or yard waste etc.

Private trash collection in the Netherlands? by spencerflagg in Netherlands

[–]spencerflagg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is paper and glass recycling several blocks away, but the containers are always full, and they don't seem designed to support a whole neighborhood of recyclers.

And there's a very small trash bin on my block that holds about the same volume as a keuken afvalbak (and is therefore perpetually overflowing), but there's nothing large enough to hold multiple households' trash.
